Columbia Pictures is in talks with Bryce Dallas Howard to play Peter Parker's love interest Gwen Stacy in SPIDER-MAN 3. She joins a cast that already includes Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Topher Grace and Thomas Haden Church.

The character of Gwen is pivotal in Spider-Man lore as Peter's high school crush, his first girlfriend and his first love. She ended up being kidnapped by the Green Goblin and died during a bridgetop battle in "Amazing Spider-Man" issue 121.

The character will be part of a love triangle and she does survive in the story the studio is reporting.

In Sam Raimi I trust. The man was even able to make a decent movie starring Kevin Costner-that shows true skill and ability, and who can argue with A Simple Plan and Army of Darkness-two fantastic but totally different films. Spiderman, while not perfect, has proven to be the best series of comic book movies to date.

Sure, introducing Gwen after MJ is backwards, but Raimi will make it all work. He's done a great job with the first two installments of the series. It looks like SM3 is going to be full of plotlines; I just hope they don't put so many plot devices into the movie that it ends up like Batman 2-4, too full with no room for the hero.

I like Bryce Dallas Howard. It will be really interesting to see how they pull this off. I mean at the end of Spidey 2, it seems that Peter and MJ are pretty established. The whole Gwen Stacy thing happened while him and MJ were just friends and they didn't fall for eachother until after Stacy was killed and he broke up with the Black Cat. They kind of substituted Gwen Stacy for MJ, and did the whole bridgetop/ Goblin thing with her instead. Well, Raimi seems to know what he`s doing so I`m not worried.

I vehemently disagree with the notion that the Spider-man films have been the best series of comic book movies to date. Personally, I feel that the X-men films were superior - or at the very least, more consistantly entertaining. The first Spider-man film was lacklustre, while the second was phenomenal. That being said, I feel the first two films fall short of the mark set by both X-Men and Superman.

I'm happy to see that they've finally decided to include Gwen Stacy, but as ponyboy76/wessmith alluded to they kind of messed up the whole arc. I'm also a bit worried that Spider-man 3 (not too mention X3) is getting a bit too bloated for its own good... but we'll have to wait and see.

I'm still not sold on Sam Raimi being the best choice for these movies - but the sequel surprised me. Hopefully the third installment will continue where the last left off...

Howard was one of the few good things about the Village, so I'm glad to see her getting this kind of break. She'll be great.

As for X-men 1 & 2 vs. Spiderman 1 & 2, I've got to give it to Spidey. The sequels were comparable in quality, but Spiderman 1 blew me away while X-men 1 left me a little disappointed.

Now, match up the first two Spideys against Burton's first Batman and Batman Begins, and I say it's Bats by a hair.

Hmmm...Raimi cast blonde Dunst to play redhead MJ, and now has cast redhead Howard to play blonde Gwen Stacy.

Hmmmmm....

I'm still of the opinion that the Powers That Be should have started the series with Gwen (Kirsten Dunst makes a more believable Stacy, anyway) and brought MJ in later.

That being said, beyond the fact that they cast a blonde as a redhead and a redhead as a blonde, I'm glad they're doing this. But this'll also shoot down any hope of those Dushku-as-Black-Cat/triangle rumors.

really who cares about the character of Gwen Stacy?! Why is she in it and more importantly why is she going to live? Throughout spidey comics 2 major events always come back to haunt him, 1. Uncle Ben's death and 2. Gwen Stacy's death. I love Raimi but I hope this movie stops being as mushy as the other two. I'm really interested in seeing how Raimi pulls off Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom. That will make the movie.

I think raithen is Bryan Singer. That or Richard Donner? Hey, raithen, whichever director you are, stop trolling. Most of us liked Superman (1 and 2) and X-men (1) as much as Spiderman 1&2. Sam Raimi is a nice man who keeps Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi in pictures. And for that, he deserve a high five.

gollum007 -- I'm kind of in the same boat as you. Gwen has been dead for like 400-some issues, and it still haunts Peter. I'm guessing Ms. Howard will only be joining us for one movie...

Well, since the Green Goblin is dead, maybe they'll kill her off when Franco finally puts on the Goblin suit.I'm guessing that will come towards the end of Raimi's series since Osborn Jr. and Peter Parker have such a close history and the film that features those two facing off will be the most emotionally charged (allowing for the death of one of Spidey's closest friends by Osborn).
