Hugo Weaving to voice Megatron!

By: Karl Schneider

According to IESB, Hugo Weaving has signed on to voice the leader of the decepticons, Megatron, in the upcoming Michael Bay film, Transformers.

In the film, dueling alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, bring their battle to Earth, leaving the future of humankind hanging in the balance.

The film opens on July 4, 2007.

KJ's Take:  I am sure they will digitally alter his voice anyways, but I think he will do a great job.  In reality, anyone is better than the once rumored Ludacris.

What happened to Frank Welker?

Yeah... Welker is still listed on IMDb as the voice. Although Hugo has a great voice and would be a welcomed addition... it just wouldn't be the same.

Casting this late into editing? If they change Optimus Prime I will be Thoroughly pissed.

Not happy about this, but Weaver is a great actor and has a distict voice.
"Hello Mr. Andeersoon...I mean."
"Hello Mr. Optiiimuuus."

No Frank Welker?? Boooo.

Another reason to skip this trainwreck of a film.

Welker would have been awesome but oh well. Hugo does have a really distinct voice and I can definitely see him doing a great job. He does evil very well.

And I don`t believe for a second that people who say it will suck now, won`t go see it when it comes out. Its Transforners for fraks sake! When will you ever get a chance again to see a live action Transformers movie, no matter how bad it may be?

Based on the desert battle scene with Vortex (?) and Scorponok, I will definately be seeing this movie. Sure I am disappointed that we don't get Peter Cullen and Frank Welker squaring off as Optimus Prime and Megatron, but since we've lost the voice talents that brought us Starscream and Jazz, I'll let it pass. I'm curious to hear Weaving's interpretation of the voice, should be fun.

Man.... I agree, no Welker equals trainwreck!?..... Oh wait, no I don't. Hugo Weaving is great news.... Sooo looking forward to this!

Rumors say Welker may be voicing someone else.

As for why the news comes so late, voice work is always the very last thing to be done in a films production.

I think Hugo will do great as Megatron, he already sounds a bit like the guy who voiced the deliciously nasty Beast Wars version of Megatron anyways! Though it would have been cool to have Welker...the movie version of Megs looks NOTHING like the G1 classic version, so it really doesn't matter to me if it has a recognizable voice or not.

This is awesome news. The rumoured "no-name" voice talent has been put to bed. Weaving will be awesome.

I'm probably the only fan...on the whole planet...who thinks Cullen just doesn't cut it anymore. I listened to the 10 "Make Prime Speak" slogans and I winced. He sounds OLD, and the delivery was strained. Can he really do this for several more years if this becomes a trilogy? The fella who voices Prime in the Cybertron series really captures the 80's era Cullen.

I think the Welker voicework on the original TF cartoon was appropriate for saturday morning fare. 24 years later on the big screen? Seems cheezy.
