They've started playing Greed Island, but the game isn't as simple as they thought it might be, and Killula and Gon don't even know the rules yet. This turns out to be a major disadvantage, as right off the bat Killula gets hit with a Trace spell that allows the other player to see where he is in the game at all times. That's the worst they suffer from the encounter, but some of the other people who entered the game with them aren't so lucky - others have been hit with similar spells, and one has been killed by a mysterious Player Killer - for real, since death in-game means the player really dies. In town, the boys start to pick up on the rules and start collecting the cards they need to clear the game.

Meanwhile, a group of players dedicated to clearing the game cooperatively has started approaching the new players, including Killula and Gon. They have a "surefire" way of clearing the game, and offer to help the new players get rid of the spells attached to them if they join the group. Gon, however, is determined to play the game his father made his own way, and refuses to join. Others from their group do, and get a much more in-depth introduction to the game, that also serves to inform the reader. The four pages of spell card listings seemed like overkill, though - it might have been a better addition to the back of the book as an appendix than within the actual story.

When Killula wins a rather rare card, they immediately get targeted by several other players who are determined to add it to their own collections. They avoid these traps with a combination of planning and luck, but it quickly becomes clear that they still have a long way to go. Biscuit, a pro Hunter who has more depth than is readily apparent, has been watching the boys progress through the game slowly, and finally has had enough and decides to start training them - no matter if they want it or not. She uses Binolt, a bounty hunter who has targeted Killula and Gon, to show them how much they still have to learn. There are some really funny scenes in here, definitely one of the highlights of the book.

In addition, several of the Spiders are in the game, and seem to have more information about the game than any of the players. They speculate that they're not actually inside the game, but in fact are playing somewhere in real life, with the game elements created by Nen. It's an interesting theory, and one I hope gets further developed later down the road.

There's quite a bit about the game that's introduced to the reader, and it gets somewhat overwhelming and bogs the story down at the beginning of this volume, but it does pick up by the end. The Greed Island arc is one that gets a lot of hate from some fans, and while it's not too hard to see why, the innocent charm is still there. If you've enjoyed the series up to this point, you'll find more to love here.
