What They Say

The Review!
This DVD contains the final two episodes of the 4-part OAV series, Idol Project. This is one of my favorite series, so please be sure to check out my review of the first two episodes as well.
The packaging is pretty nice, it's semi-rare to get an actual keepcase when buying R2s instead of a jewel case, so that's always a plus. The cover art is great with pictures of all the main characters in the show - and of course, they're all women. The back contains more pictures, a summary of the two episodes, and a list of the voice actors for the main characters.

The video quality is right on par with the first DVD volume - very good, as you would expect from most OAVs. The audio is excellent as well, although it's only stereo so it's nothing fancy.

Once again, no menus, and no extras, which is somewhat disappointing. The potential for music videos for this series is extremely high, since it has an incredible soundtrack - but as far as I know, the LDs don't have any extras either, so we're not missing anything in that respect.

Obviously once you see that there are absolutely no men on the cover of this DVD, you can assume that it's all about women. And you'd be right. The few male roles in the show are usually played by animals or aliens.

But who wants to see men anyway? The third episode has probably got the most fan service in it than any of the other three. You get to see all but maybe one of the Excellent Idols naked, and besides that there's a bunch of sexual jokes and physical comedy.

The show itself is all about music - see my first review for more background information. I really need to warn you that these last two episodes are extremely silly, and it would be extremely hard to understand 80% of the jokes without understanding what the episodes are about. Most of the important information is passed verbally, but don't let that keep you from watching the show if you don't speak Japanese. There's plenty of girls, panties, and bouncing object (know what I mean?) to keep the eyes entertained, not to mention great music (music is always good, even when you don't understand it).

Episode Three is called Shocking Report. It takes place a few weeks after Earth's Excellent Idols participate in the contests in the Tropical Dimension. All of the Idols are off doing their own thing - from being superheroes, to waitressing, to acting, to playing game shows, to doing nothing. Mimu is working on the Movie Planet delivering food in order to work up enough money to return to Starland. Mimu still hasn't had her Excellent Idol audition yet, but she is unknowingly being watched and scored by three judges to see if she deserves to be an Idol. After being warned at a fortune teller that her day will be full of calamities, Mimu manages to get herself into enough trouble that she eventually runs into all of the other Idols - all in the course of making a food delivery!

Episode Four is titled Final Concert, taking place immediately where episode three left off. There is a problem with the Idol Dimension! The people of this Idol Dimension, where Earth's President the Excellent Idol Yuri was born, have become too obsessed with their favorite Idol, Yuri. So their dimension has begun sucking in all the other dimensions in order to find more Idols. Everyone in the Idol Dimension is starting to turn into Yuri, and only by finding another Idol can they hope to save themselves, and everyone else. So Earth's Excellent Idols put on shows to try to get the people of the Idol Dimension to worship them, instead - but when the Tropical Dimension gets sucked in, the Idol Dimension starts to flood. And now the Burning Dimension is headed in, and if it gets too close everyone will burn up! Which Idol will the people look to? And will you finally get to hear Mimu sing before getting scorched by the Burning Dimension? You'll find out!

I would love to see this series comes out in the U.S. someday, but until then we'll have to live with the R2 DVDs. Any fan of anime that contains women, singing, music, action, and humor will definitely enjoy this fun title.
