Evanescence: Bringing Daredevil to Life

Date: Friday, February 14, 2003

If someone had walked up to you a month ago and said "Evanescence rules," you probably wouldn't have had the slightest idea what they were talking about. However, with the upcoming movie, Daredevil being fresh on everyone's minds, there is no doubt you are at least vaguely familiar with this small "Goth-pop" band from Little Rock.

Recently, I got to chat it up with Evanescence co-founder and guitar player, Ben Moody, to discuss the band's involvement with the super-hyped movie debuting this Valentine's Day. I asked him about how his band was selected to have not one, but two songs featured on the Daredevil soundtrack. Their record label, Wind-Up Records was the company to be producing said soundtrack.

"The director (Mark Steven Johnson) and a producer really liked ("Bring Me to Life") and thought it would work well for the movie. That was going to be it, but then they heard "My Immortal" and thought it would work for a certain scene in the movie." says Ben. (Fans awaiting the movie can only speculate when this "certain scene" is, but according to Ben, the song is known as "The Voice of Elektra", so make of that what you will.)

The music Evanescence provides for Daredevil is completely and utterly intoxicating. From the fast, heavy sounds of "Bring Me to Life" to the soft, sullen piano in "My Immortal", once you begin listening, you cannot help but want to hear them all the way through. Something that only adds to this is "Bring Me to Life" being played during the latter half of the 3rd and final theatrical trailer to the film. When Amy Lee's (Evanescence's vocalist and other co-founder) beautiful voice fills your ears, the chills race down your spine. In fact, the event was "totally surreal" for Ben, who has never tasted this level of success before.

There is no doubt in my mind that Evanescence's music will continue to branch out to an immense amount of people very quickly. Unlike a lot of today's bands that focus more on appearance than the music, Evanescence pulls various life experiences into their music. They just wrapped up a tour in California and are kicking off an east-coast tour very soon to promote their debut album,"Fallen", which comes out this March. Be sure to check out their official site, Evanescence.com, which contains all sorts of stuff, from a bio of the group, to their official message board, which most of the band members frequent.
