According to the AP, George Lucas confirmed on Friday that the sequel Indiana Jones 4 will begin filming next year for release in 2008.

Harrison Ford is signed on to star and the new script has received approval from Lucas and Steven Spielberg.  Lucas kept mum about the plot, but said that the latest action flick will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries."

"It's going to be fantastic. It's going to be the best one yet," Lucas said.  "I think it's going to be really cool."

KJ's Take:  It's about damn time.  This movie has been stuck in development hell for years, I was beginning to think that by the time they finalized everything they would have to title it: Indiana Jones 4: Dealing with Depends.

First, Karl Schneider, are you KJ? Is that your nickname?

Secondly, I am actually looking forward to this film. I recently saw a few pics of Harrison Ford and he looks like he has ben working out. He looks A LOT older, but I am sure they still make a great story. Hell Sly Stallone looks old, but he did a great job in Rocky Balboa. So I am sure they can pull this off. I just hope the story is as good as Lucas says it is....because it is Lucas saying it afterall.

Maybe we will get a pleasant surprise with Indiana 4?

theCOLLECTOR,

Yeah, my nickname is KJ. My dad and me share the same name, but different middle names, so my family calls me KJ to avoid the confusion.

As for the movie, I haven't really made up my mind as of yet.

Can someone please tell George to stop making sequels to good movies and ruining them?

So long as Lucas doesn't try to kiddify IJ4 we should be alright.

His overall plotting hasn't changed, it remains tight and epic in scope, it's his recent inclination towards trying-to-be/pandering-to/something-he-isn't character _dialogue_ that worries me.

Also I'm worried because he used the term "cool" and has bought a very mid-life crisis black Darth Vader/Kitt/Batmobile hybrid lookin car.

So someone please please bring in a dialogue writer who can over-write any compunction Lucas may have to write poodoo lines for the IJ4 characters.

id est.

Here's hoping Spielberg will smack some sense and filmaking sense into Lucas. War of the Worlds wasn't bad (except for the storybook ending with the kid suddenly alive) so hopefully Spielberg will have some (a lot) of influence over Lucas.

Why are you reporting this? EVERY year for the last 15 years was gonig to be the year they started filming. I will believe it once I see it.

And WotW was bad, very bad. Half the movie took place in basements. Tom Cruise was annoying and so were the kids. Just a bad movie overall that made little sense.

Hey, just remember, the dialogue in the original trilogy wasn't as bad as the second because Ford "don't do bad dialogue" He redoes what he doesn't like!"

Plus, Spielberg is a good intervener!

Dialogue shouldn't be a problem. Lucas isn't going to be writing them. Besides, even if he was, Ford saying "jumping through hyperspace isn't like dusting crops, boy" is classic. Its not that he don't do bad dialogue, he just proves that some actors can deliver bad dialogue entertainingly, and some can't (ie; anything said by Portman in the prequels). I'm really looking forward to this.

As much as I'm looking forward to this, it's going to be "I'll believe it when I see it." This movie has been rumored, approved, disapproved more times than can be counted. Hopefully it goes into production this year for the stated release date. Definitely something to look forward to in 2008!

As I understand it, the big stumbling blocks over the last several years was coordinating schedule between Ford, Spielberg and Lucas and agreeing on a script. From the AP article, it appears that those two problems have been solved. So, this is a big step forward in actually getting this movie made.

Second, George Lucas is only dangerous when he has unilateral control of the production. In this case, he will have Spielberg and Ford to keep him in line.

Finally, the age issue doesn't bother me. Young Indiana Jones Chronicles that at times had a kid, a teenage and an elderly Indiana character was always convincing. However, I do think that they will have to move away from Nazis as bad guys. A Boys From Brazil twist would be pretty annoying. Also, Soviet bad guys would be treading on classic James Bond territory too much. Maybe a plot about an obscure religious cult with Judeo-Christian signifigance would be a good idea. Someone could finally show Dan Brown how to do it right!
