What They Say
This trade paperback contains 10 stories celebrating the quintessential subject of ero-manga, the beauty of the Japanese schoolgirl. From the depraved scenes of bondage in "Bound," to shocking dick-girl action in "Tears," every comic is infused with angelic young women and hardcore sex.

The Review
Packaging:
Easily one of Icarus' best-looking books, this reissue of Innocence is as sexy outside as it is inside. Using new designs exclusively for the Revised Edition the front cover features a classic Kamogawa bishojo - long-legged, pink haired wearing part of a school uniform. This is exactly what your non-manga reading friends think all manga is about... Including the bare breasted-ness! To the left of the image is the logo in Japanese and English. The highlighted letters do not distract from the character art; instead, they direct the eye to the transparent blown up shadow of Miss Innocence placed between the logo and the original.

On the back is another Kamogawa girl, this one only is chained at the wrists wearing black thigh highs and a garter. This is quite a contrast to what most of Innocence's shorts are about. However, it does prove that this book is not as innocent as it seems.

The print is very good throughout. Sadly, this book does not feature color plates but those CG pages were rendered well into B&W. This new version of Innocence has 20 pages of new content and a new atogaki. So with the new low price of $14.95 you might want to double-dip if you already have the original.

Artwork:
Kamogawa's art style is almost iconic; one that is often imitated in the doujin world. Characters are on the long side and I mean everything is long. They have long legs, long hair and even their eyes aren't really round instead they are narrow and long. Another element to Kamogawa's art is the hair. His earlier work has some big big hair. In addition, it is not exclusive to his women, either. In some ways, I am reminded of animation designs from the 80's, but drawn with a tremendous amount of simplification. Kamogawa's art has changed over the years and looking you can tell by comparing PORTRAIT with K's Theory, that his use of vertical lines in his earlier works really distorts any horizontal symmetry, making the heads of these girls look huge relative to their long bodies. Its a technique that works for bishojo designs in doujinshi because it draws the eyes to faces and places where there is more detail. Weird looking but effective.

There is a decent amount of variety in these stories -futanari, bondage, comedy... Kamogawa does well with most of them, but I noticed that his older characters just didn't blend in with his other designs. They were almost too hard-boiled for this manga (a problem found in a lot of ero actually). Background designs are pretty static and are rarely relevant to the plot. However, the layout is very active with characters often busting out of panel for comedic and dramatic reasons.

SFX/Text:
The translation for this title is quite interesting. I really didn't have a problem with it, outside of the occasional typo. What I found intriguing was the translation of sounds. SFX are not translated, but if placed in a bubble... Then Icarus would translate the moaning, slurping and panting. And they generally transliterated them. Transliterations are often closer to the real sound than traditional SFX but they might take a bit getting used to. "Chu" might register as a kissing sound instead of a sucking sound to most but when you think about it...

Contents: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Innocence is a collection of 11 shorts filled with innocent looking young women doing not so innocent acts...

In BOUND, high school student Takeda-kun receives a special gift from his upper-classmen. It's a video and one that he should only view alone. What he doesn't know is that the video really is a special gift from his older sister. Their own special bond has kept them apart for too long. Now this has bound them together in a very intimate manner.

Tomo is keeping a secret from her best friend Yukari in My Girlfriend's Feelings, My Sister's Feelings. See Tomo-chan has been seeing Yukari's brother and she seems to know a side of Makoto that is foreign to the one big sis knows. When Yukari says Makoto is the smallest member of the basketball team, Tomo knows he has the biggest member on the hoops team. When Yukari thinks Makoto is shy, Tomo recalls encounters on the school roof in broad daylight! When she says Makoto does not like to try new things, kinky costumes and weird acts flood Tomo's memories. Anyone who'd like Makoto must be an idiot according to Yukari... She might be right!

In PET Minami learns that owning a pet means taking full responsibility for that pet. First, she must decide which pet she wants to keep. For the longest time Kotaro was her little boy. They would go on walks while big sis would stay at home training her own pet. When Minami sees her sister's pet, she has to take care of him. She has to train him, feed him and take command of him. She can't slack off with this one because this one can talk back.

Comments
One of Icarus' best-selling titles gets a re-release with new stories, new cover art and a great new price. A collection of shorts made up of eleven hot and heavy college (cough, secondary school, cough) relationships. As is the case with most short collections, Innocence features a range of themes and fetishes all set in the realm of "innocent" gakuen "romance". However, this manga and most of the characters in it are not innocent at all. Their bodies might look innocent. Their faces have an innocent appearance to old grizzled ero-fans like me. But these kids know about sex and they can possibly teach some old dogs a few things.

An Icarus classic, Innocence is one of the better gakuen ero titles to hit the States. While the subject matter might not appeal to a wide range of readers, to the ero enthusiast Innocence is a rare example of kids doing the wildest things. Where most of the sex is consensual and practically every couple involved are the same age. Kamogawa challenges their innocence by placing them in situations that are quite grown up. When we see these young people doing those adult acts, taking so much pleasure from it all, it is easy to see why some people want to grow up fast. So it is easy to see why this manga is so good.

Good art, entertaining stories, extra content and for a great new price... Innocence belongs on almost every ero-manga reader's shelf.
