I'm not surprised at IronMan's success, afterall it has been predicted for most of the week. Speed Racer, even after lowered expectations it still didn't meet them. I thought SR was bad but I thought it would at least cash in the first week out and at a reported 160+ mil tab it has to be considered one of the biggest disappointments in recent memory. I guess the bad word of mouth, bad reviews, bad tracking, 2h 15m long, overly chatty, noisy, convoluted, too busy for the eyes spectacle was too much to overcome. It's being reported that even overseas is doing badly.

On a seperate note, read in LatinoReview.com that Brad Pitt is the name being tossed around Marvel Studios to play Thor. Obviously no offer has been made as they don't have a director yet and they haven't finished the final draft. I went back and popped the Troy dvd in and I think it may not be a bad move. He's a really good actor, he can beef up and maybe with some trick photography they can make him look the 6'6" that Thor is ala Xerxes in 300. I love Thor even more than IronMan so I really hope they get it right.

So Speed Racer is officially a flop...That's to bad...The scheduling and the Advertising campaign of this movie killed it plus the length but most definitely the scheduling...

I would give Metal props for calling it but what he's been calling, in the last two weeks is not what he called at the beginning of all of this... He did not mention scheduling or other movies but said this movie would fail because it sucked and he still has not responded to that and thus has made him self believe the avalanche of bullshit he has been feeding us has been the real issues at hand...No props for you Metal and you can still kiss my Ass! Try going back to that original thread of Speed and try reading what you said about this movie and ask yourself if you should still kiss Gauley's ass...

Wiseguy...Bad idea on Brad Pitt playing Thor...End of story...

p.s. Good for Iron Man...They did a really solid job on that movie and it deserves what it is taking in...

mla, do you think they should go for a wrestler ala Cena, look for an unknown with the physical traits (not many with the acting skills though) or Pitt, who we know can act. True Pitt may be too expensive for a film that probably will be really expensive to make and that may be the big drawback IMO. I would go for Pitts and hope he'd settle for a pay cut.

http://www.stickam.com/filmfreak that's a link to an interview with Jon Favreau for anybody that's still basking in the success of IM like me and has 48 min. to waste.

Not that it matters much but read that the other studios are claiming SR really came in third and accusing WB of inflating their numbers just to get the 2nd spot. We'll know for sure tomorrow.

I figured Iron Man for $60 Million and a first place finish this weekend, but I thought Speed Racer would do a lot better than $20 million (I figured $50 million). With a budget reported around $120 million it's got to be considered a huge disappointment. Although the racing scenes did nothing for me, I actually liked the characters in the film. Hirsch was pretty good as Speed, Matthew Fox made a good Racer X, and I really liked Goodman, Sarandon and Ricci in their roles. I thought Goodman was fantastic as Pops and gave the character a lot of depth. Looks like Goodman's dropped a lot of weight. The effects and the "look" of the film were terrific (the colors in the film were terrific, reminding me a little of when I saw Dick Tracy back in the day), but the movie was just "eh" for me. I was never a big fan of the show, so maybe that's why the movie didn't do anything for me. I agree with wiseguy that it was an assault on the senses, but it's anime come to life, so that's to be expected.

I caught a matinee of Redbelt Saturday, and I loved that film. If you're a Mamet fan, or just like woven storylines, go see this film. The lead actor (can't remember how to spell his name, but he's the fantastic black actor who played the cross-dressing boot designer in Kinky Boots and the government agent in Serenity) was great, as was the supporting cast. After his string of family movies, it's nice to see Tim Allen in a different kind of role. This was a great movie.

I'm glad Iron Man is doing so well. I don't know about Brad Pitt as Thor, but who knows. I remember when his name was being thrown around for the part of Steve Rogers a few years ago. I'd like to see someone a little more imposing as Thor, but as wiseguy noted the camera can be used to play tricks on the eye. He definitely has the acting chops for the role.

Not looking forward to seeing Prince Caspian this weekend, but promised to take the kids. The first Narnia movie didn't impress me, I found it boring, so I'm hoping this one's better. I'm just waiting for the 22nd to see Indy 4.

Damn, MLA, you need to man up son. Give props where props are due. Metal did call a flop and so far it looks it will be that way. As far as stepping away from the box office numbers, it appears he was also right with the critics not giving the film very good reviews and the word of mouth being mixed at best. I don't know what Metal did say exactly in the first thread, but at least box office wise and review wise he nailed it. The guy is still a douche though and probably believes industry people are spying on him but he was right on Speed Racer.

The movie Redbelt would've been a lot better if you know who was starting right!? Nah, I won't say it cause you peeps know who needed to be there.

Wiseguy my brotha from anotha motha, I'm with you with Pitt, not bad at all. I don't think they should go for a wrestler or a guy that just looks the part. I'd rather see an actor portray Thor, although I'm not a big Thor fan.

Not sure if I'll catch Prince CAspian, to hooked with GTA4. Definitely be out for Indy. By the way, I've just seen 2 mixed reviews for Indy, one of them calling it an "unnecessary film" whatever that means. I hope that's not the case, cause I'm really pumped to see Dr. Jones again.

Dont' know if Pitt would be up for playing Thor though. They can always give him those fake arms they gave Vinnie Jones when he played Juggernaut in X3.
Personally I don't think they need a muscular guy. Just get a normal guy to bulk up a bit, he doesn't have to be a bodybuilder.
I liked Hugh Jackman even though he's bigger than wolverine, topher grace even though he's a skinny dude compared to Brock.

Speed Racer was not a great movie but it wasn't as bad as the critics have been writing. Still, when you see a car flip up in the air and land perfectly on the other side the first time, it was cool. The 15th time, it got tiresome. I thought there would enough hype for it to have a stronger weekend than it did. I know the movie was in trouble when I went on Friday afternoon to a virtually empty theater. When I went last week to Iron Man, it was packed at about the same showtime.

Note: What is with the so called comedies out there? What Happens in Vegas is the latest entry in the "this is what passes for comedy now" movies I have seen out there. With Baby Mama, Made of Honor, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and now What Happens in Vegas had absolutely horrible and unfunny previews. I don't care what critics said, I was not running out and seeing these films. I wouldn't even watch them on DVD because life is too short to waste time on crap. It says a lot that the mediocore Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanimo Bay is the highlight of comedy lately.

Wiseguy...I'm not sure who they should go for, I can except the fact that you had someone in mind and that's cool but I just can't see it being Pitt but then again, he could be good...I don't know and hope that whoever they get can act and look the part...

I'm glad Iron man had a good two weekend run, because the next two weeks there will be some competition. Infact Narnia will be hurt by Indy coming out a week later, but I still think they'll both have good numbers.

So are we not doing the top ten this year? I thought that was fun even though I sucked at it last time.

daforce • May 11, 2008, 08:08pm •
I have a feeling that Iron Man will pull the #1 spot next weekend as well.

Yeah, yeah, Narnia 2 is coming out, but I've been hearing A LOT of bad things about it. Not to mention that with the economy the way it is and gas prices on the rise, parents are making their kids choose only a few movies to see this summer. With Indy 4 coming out the week after Narnia 2, it's a fair bet that a lot of people will be saving their ducats to see that instead.

I still have my apprehension about Indy 4 (mostly due to Shia Ladouche and George Lucas' involvement), and the fact that I haven't heard ANYTHING good or bad about it from my usual sources REALLY worries me. I'll still see it, but I may wait until the crowds have died down.
