DEAD OF NIGHT Announcement

We ran a brief mention of it yesterday, but Platinum Studios and Hyde Park Entertainment Group have given us the official announcement of the commencement of principal photography on the 'Dead of Night'. The most interesting new information is a description of director Kevin Munroe's take on the material. Here's an excerpt from the press release:

The film is based on the best-selling Italian comic book series, 'Dylan Dog', created by Tiziano Sclavi and published by Italy's Sergio Bonelli Editore. The comic book series has sold more than 56 million units worldwide and has been translated into 17 languages since its debut in 1986. Principal photography is taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Brandon Routh, ('Superman Returns'), stars as 'Dylan' - a reluctant private investigator who is drawn into the world of vampires, werewolves and the undead -- and the film is being directed by Kevin Munroe, whose 2007 re-imagining of 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' resurrected the billion dollar franchise.

Munroe brings a fresh take to the genre by focusing less on the transformation from human to non-human and more on the seamless interaction between the living and the undead. Writers Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly ('Sahara' and 'Conan The Barbarian') have taken the world of Dylan Dog out of a European setting and given it a New Orleans flavor with its rich bayou and marshland backdrop.

Platinum Studios and the Hyde Park Group are joined in the production with producer Gilbert Adler who is no stranger to comic book adaptations, having produced "Superman Returns" and "Constantine" for Warner Bro.. The film reteams Adler with star Brandon Routh, who played Clark Kent. Adler has worked for many years in the thriller/horror genre as a writer, producer and director for numerous "Tales from the Crypt" television episodes and feature films. He has also produced "House on Haunted Hill", "Thirteen Ghosts", "Ghost Ship" and most recently, "Valkyrie", his second stint with director Bryan Singer.

Hyde Park and Platinum Studios completed the financing for the picture with Australia and New Zealand-based Omnilab Media and Hong Kong-based Standard Chartered Bank.

Greg Rucka says WHITEOUT isn't faithful, nor should it be

Greg Rucka chatted up MTV Splah Page at the recent NYCC. Among other things he talked about the movie adaptation of 'Whiteout' which differes from his graphic novel, and he's OK with that.

"If you read ‘Whiteout — and I’m very proud of it to this day — [but] if you shot what I wrote and Steve drew, you would have a crappy movie," said Rucka. "We didn’t create a movie, we created a comic book miniseries. So you have to take that and adapt it. If you’re not going to do that and you’re going to piss and moan when they change something, you’re not being terribly realistic."

More interesting insights in the video clip of the interview...

Anton Yelchin a potential GREEN LANTERN?

Latino Review mentions Anton Yelchin as the latest candidate rumored to be under consideration for the role of Hal Jordan in the new 'Green Lantern' movie.

Yelchin will be seen as Kyle Reese in 'Terminator Salvation' and Chekov in 'Star Trek'.

However, Latino says that the producers of the movie are looking at "every young up and coming actor", so Yelchin is but one name on the list.

 RE: Ironman Trailer

Why is Professor X trying to find out who Ironman is?

hanso 2/27/2009 7:21:13 AM

Anton who?  The kid from Alpha Dog?  That dude? Gonna be a sad day if that cat gets cast.   I thought Hal was 27, WTF!!?

If they gonna pick from Alpha Dog, I rather have Emile Hirsch.

Latino Review updated the entry on Green Lantern:

The producers really REALLY want Ryan Gosling. Even though he initially passed they are going to try again. Anything is possible but insider folks believe he is going to pass yet again. Hell, look at how many times the Dodgers went to Manny Ramirez and how many times he's passed on their offer.

Wiseguy 2/27/2009 11:12:40 AM

Gosling was my top choice, even before the studio said they wanted him. Hopefully he'll reconsider. Yelchin as Hal just made me nauseous.

hanso, come on now. Emile Hirsch is practically a midget. Remember you have to be this tall to fly a jet. If Gosling says no go with your pick, Chris Evans, even though he already did a similar cocky pilot role for the FF

samson 2/27/2009 11:20:03 AM

Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice would be my choice. I know they want to go younger, but everytime I see him in Burn Notice I think, "Hal Jordan."

hanso 2/27/2009 11:53:47 AM

Look man, I don't want Emile Hirsch, I'm just saying if they talkin Anton Yelchin then they looking to go young cause that dude looks like he's 18 years old.  If they going so young then they might as well see what Hirsch is up to even if he is a midget.

Tom Cruise was a pilot Wiseguy, you remember that!

The IronMan cartoon: I love the new look for the Mandarin. Completly bad ass!

Green Lantern: It is my opion that Chris Evans is the guy for the part. And that's all I have to say about that.

kwsupes 2/27/2009 2:03:39 PM

Samson I am totally down with Jeffery Donovan as Hal Jordan I think that would work well. I say don't go younger, Hal Jordan has a little baggage by the time he becomes Green Lantern he needs to be in his thrities. I hate that Hollywood thinks everyone has to be twenty years old. No one wants see a Jonas Brother as a superhero, so here's a thought make the movie right. I also think David Boreanaz would be great as Hal I mean hey everyone loved him as the voice of GL in New Frontier why not let him have the live action part. I also think John Hamm would be good as Hal Jordan. I also think Naveen Andrews would be good as Sinestro.

Plus Christopher Walken should play all of the Guardians like Deep Roy did in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. (the part is a joke).

hanso 2/27/2009 4:39:13 PM

The only thing worse than Yelchin as Hal would be David Borenaz as Hal.  That guy is a tool.   His film career is a joke and he's like 40 years old. Let him stay doing Bones.

mortellan 3/1/2009 2:06:25 AM

The IronMan cartoon is okay. Kind of Manga-y but still heads and tails about the 90's IM cartoon. Marvel has alot of catching up to do in the animation department still.
