The new 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' whipped up phenomenal ticket sales this weekend, but has yet to set any records, according to estimates published by Box Office Mojo.
After debuting on Thurdsday, the movie has collected $126 million thus, making it easily the #1 movie of the week. Record keepers will count the Monday holiday receipts in 'Indy's opening weekend and the studio is guessing another $25 million today, which would make it a horse race against the standing record weekend of $151.1 million, held by 'Spider-Man 3'.
Doctor Jones couldn't come close to the opening day record held by 'Spider-Man 3'. Indy's Thursday collected just $25 million compared to Spidey's opening Friday tally of $59.8 million. Even in the "Best Opening Thursday " list, 'Crystal Skull' trailed behind 'Revenge of the Sith'.
Marvel's 'Iron Man' movie continues to show legs of...well...iron. In the film's fourth week of release it's still holding strong as the #3 movie, collecting another $20.1 million. The four-week domestic total now stands at $252.3. By comparison, the highly-anticipated sequel 'Prince Caspian' was in the #2 spot and earned $23 million in its second week.
Finally, the much-maligned 'Speed Racer' is still on the charts at #5. It took in $4 million over its third weekend, bringing its total gross up to $36.2 million.
