Marvel has officially announced another bit of casting from Captain America: The First Avenger. As has been previously reported, Dominic Cooper will be playing a young Howard Stark in the film. The character will likely be involved in the science and technology team supporting the super soldier during World War II.

Press Release

Marvel Studios announced today that Dominic Cooper has been cast to star as Howard Stark in the studio’s highly anticipated movie Captain America: The First Avenger opposite Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, and Stanley Tucci.  In the film, Cooper will portray the younger version of Howard Stark, the character which John Slattery portrayed in Iron Man 2.  Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce Captain America: The First Avenger.  Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, Nigel Gostelow and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce.  The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Cooper will soon be seen in Stephen Frears’ Tamara Drewe and Lee Tamahori’s The Devil's Double.  He was most recently seen in the Oscar nominated An Education as well as The Duchess.  Cooper is also well known for his roles as Sky in the movie musical Mamma Mia! and Dakin in both the stage and screen adaptations of The History Boys.

In addition to Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel Studios most recently released the highly anticipated sequel, Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, and will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including Thor on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios' The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

Cooper is represented by CAA.

Well, that's just dumb--I mean, the whole planet just saw John Slattery in the role.

Nice continuity there, Marvel.

Actually it's not entirely dumb. This movie will take place in the early 1940s and what we saw of Mr. Stark was in the 1960s. So the continuity in question is still safe. I actually liked him in Iron Man 2 though. He reminded me of Walt Disney introducing his dream of Disneyland/world.

John Slattery FTW yo!!  At least he'll show up in The Adjustment Bereau.

I am still dissapointed in IM2 with all the randomness and lack of a solid storyline.  I was set to see it 3x over that weekend.  I saw it once.

I hope there is a good reason for Marvel to be switching actors for the third time, I know in part 1 he was just pictured but still. Regardless of who is playing a minor character it still sounds like is going to turn out to be a good movie.

Anyone know when IM2 is supposed to hit the DVD shelves?

krathwardroid 6/30/2010 5:43:45 PM

How was anyone able to complain about this casting choice at all? They had to get a younger actor to play Howard Stark in the 1940s. I think the continuity is doing just fine in the Marvel universe so far.

I agree with Dazzler. IM2 was disappointing.

As for Slattery, yeah, I didn't think of that--they need a younger actor for the '40s.
