Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3

Wait, what?

By Robert T. Trate     May 31, 2011

Here is James Badge Dale in character as the Iron Patriot on the set of Iron Man 3 in North Carolina. A surprise because if you’ve been following the movie it was just assumed he’d been playing Coldblood since his character is Eric Savin. Nonetheless the picture has emerged (below).

A strange twist for the character (Savin) and the Iron Patriot as this particular Iron Man suit was designed by Norman Osborn (pictured above in header).

Thanks to DarthBob for the submission.

Shame, when I saw these yesterday I hoped it was Steve Rogers.

Well it wasn't going to be Norman Osborne was it?

Ok, I'm confused. Norman Osborne was the Iron Patriot during the Dark Reign storyline. The movie covers the Extremis storyline. Did I miss Civil War, World War Hulk, and Secret Invasion?

What's an Iron Patriot?  I have not read an Iron Man comic in well over a decade..so seriously anyone got a primer on this guy?

Mikemc2, after 'Civil War' and 'Secret Invasion', Norman Osborne had managed to pull a Lex Luthor.  Osborne reformed SHEILD as HAMMER and formed his own 'Dark Avengers'.  There was the Iron Patriot (Iron Man), Wolverine's son Daken, Moonstone (disguised as Ms. Marvel), Mac Gargan's Venom (given a serum to shrink down to Spiderman size), Sentry, and Bullseye (as Hawkeye).  Basically the Thunderbolts posing as heroes...

Since Osborne is a Spidey villain and currently under Sony property (and most likely the secret villain behind the Lizard from what I've seen in the 'Amazing Spiderman' trailer), Iron Patriot can't be him for legal reasons.  So, I imagine since Mandarin is some terrorist who passes out rings to his croney's to show there in his group (from 'Iron Man' the movie), instead of the Chinese super villain who collects ten magic rings,  Iron Patriot is probable his plan as a replacement for Stark.  That's my opinion, though...

Wikipedia Iron Patriot and Dark Avengers.  It'll give you the whole plot.

Either that or the government is taking their dislike of Stark one step further and cannibilizing his tech to create Iron Patriot, an Iron Man who THEY control...  We'll see.

Even if Iron Patriot isn't going to be Osborn in this film, the character's placement does make sense given that this takes place after The Avengers and Captain America is back in the public eye.  Having Iron Patriot in play could be a psychological tactic to throw Tony off his game and turn the public against him.

And this may be earlier in the film.  Savin could still become Coldblood by the end of it.

I can't wait to see how they tie this all together.  Regardless of where the story goes Iron Man and War Machine are going to have their hands full!

Wiseguy 5/31/2012 5:16:45 AM

The Iron Patriot cannot be Osborn because Sony owns that character. So it makes perfect sense and it's a great idea for Marvel to incorporate the IP in another way.

I'd bet the IP will try to pass himself as the true hero while trying to discredit IM, possibly at the behest of the Mandarin who reportedly will be the guy behind the scenes even thou he won't be the actual main villain.

I think it makes perfect sense for the impostor like in the comics to drape himself in the flag's colors

Whiteandnerdy just read your post so we're thinking along similar lines.
