Fox planning X-MEN: FIRST CLASS film - Nov 20, 2008 - 08:50am
mckracken, I believe FLINT 's comment " If Singer hadn't jumped ship we wouldn't be force fed a Heros meets The O.C. reboot." is just stating that he left the X franchise for Superman.   I wouldn't be as phyched about a Wolverine'less X-Men.  That's just me, because I understand a lot of people like it that way.  I just don't really like the originals as a team that much.  I really don't like Cyclops and Angel.  Beast is probably the one I like best out of the orignals I also did not mind Sky High. I expected it to be about what it was.

R.I.P.D., MAD TV, Watchmen and Toon news - Nov 13, 2008 - 01:19pm
I actually don't remember the last episode I have seen.  I haven't seen any newer ones, so maybe it did get funny again & I just didn't know.

R.I.P.D., MAD TV, Watchmen and Toon news - Nov 13, 2008 - 07:22am
As far as Mad TV goes, it hasn't really been good in as much as I have senn of it since Will Saso left.  Kenny Rogers Jackass, anyone?

Del Toro Won't Cast HOBBIT Until Script is Done - Nov 13, 2008 - 07:18am
Dazzler here is a little info on the LOTR blu-rays.  http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#111108  I used that site a lot during the format war, and they proved to be pretty acurate.  I can see both sides of the delayed casting.  On one side I think the books provide you with all you really need to know about the characters, and unless you plan on changing it quite a bit (bad idea) then you could start choosing actors. On the other hand, maybe you should concentrate fully on getting a good script together and not distracting yourself with trying to do too much at once.  I also hope they don't expand characters roles too much just to include certain actors, *cough Kate Blanchet & Live Tyler.

NBC Cancels Slater's MY OWN WORST ENEMY - Nov 13, 2008 - 07:09am
This does suck.  Wiseguy, True Romance is one of my favorite films, not just my favorite Slater film.  I's say its in my top 10 or 15. I didn't think Enemy was the best show, but I liked it and found it enjoyable to watch.   The premise was a little shaky, but I could overlook that.   It also seemed like they tried to mix in a little comedy and not make it as intense as 24 for example.  I think they probably should have stuck to a more serious tone and let any comedic moments develope a little more naturally. I would have liked to continue watching the show.  As it and Life on Mars are the only new shows this year that I have watched regularly.

Jaden Smith Leading New KARATE KID - Nov 11, 2008 - 07:29am
I doubt I'll ever see it if they do remake it.  Though with my name being Daniel and being a kid when the original came out, I expierienced being called Daniel-San for years and even still get the occaisional Daniel-San thrown my way. Sweep the leg!

TV Wasteland: Let the LOST and Heroes Comparisons Begin - Nov 11, 2008 - 07:24am
Iracors, that is the best way to watch Lost.  No commercials, no waiting for the next episode.  I did not watch Lost until the first two seasons were out on DVD.  Beware though, once you start watching, you may not get a lot of sleep.  It would be late at night with me having to work the next day, but I would say to myself that I can watch one more episode.

TV Wasteland: Let the LOST and Heroes Comparisons Begin - Nov 10, 2008 - 10:37am
I have never really compared Lost to Heros.  I've always thought Lost was vastly superior.  I like Heros, but I don't think season 1 was as good as many thought it was, nor do I think the shortened season was really as bad as some thought.   For me, Lost is just a fresher idea and more interesting.   Heros is too much like the X-Men comics, and while I like the X-Men comics a lot, Heros just seems like it has already been done before in my mind. Nothing about Heros really surprises me much.

Universal Greenlights SMOKIN' ACES Prequel - Nov 05, 2008 - 12:34pm
I just seem to remember that like many other films, the previews/trailers  were better than the actuall film turned out to be.  I haven't lived with my parents in about 14 years, but even if I lived with them today in the basement, I am pretty sure I would still think of this movie as average at best.  By the way, my lack of excitement for this movie has nothing to do with your ability to enjoy it.

PIRATES 4 Prepares to Set Sail in 2012 - Nov 05, 2008 - 07:16am
I think of Pirates like The Matrix, in that each got progressively worse than the previous film.  The only thing is that I thought the first Matrix film was much better than the first Pirates film.

Universal Greenlights SMOKIN' ACES Prequel - Nov 05, 2008 - 07:13am
I pretty sure I thought the first one was a disappointment.  But seeing as I hardly remember anything about it, I'm going to have to say it was less than memorable.  I'll probably skip any sequel/prequel version..

Top Maniacal Rumors: Super Millar, Nolan's Return and Hellboy Ho-Tep - Oct 31, 2008 - 07:08am
I'm 50/50 on the Hulk's deleted scenes.  Some of them would have worked if they stayed in.  I believe some of the deleted scenes just would have basically rambled on.  For instance the extended version of William Hurt and Tim Roth when they were talking about the super soldier project.   While the acting was good and it gave some info on Ross, I felt if it stayed in the movie it would have been a big speed bump for the pacing. Syxxblade, I have the BluRay too, I didn't try to watch it with deleted scenes intact. I don't think you can on this one though. Some Blu-rays have "seamless branching" which will allow you to different versions of a movie from the regular menu. I'm not sure if the Hulk uses this feature.   I'm not too happy about Bruce Campbell not doing the Bubba Ho Tep sequel, that's probably because we all seem to love Bruce.

Mendes to give voice to PREACHER feature - Oct 30, 2008 - 11:42am
I feel a Preacher movie would be a lot like True Romance with religion and a vampire thrown in.  Two hours is just not enough time to do the story justice.   I for one enjoyed Preacher a whole lot more than Watchmen.  Preacher and Transmetropolitan are my favorite comic series.

CHUCK: Chuck Versus Tom Sawyer - Oct 29, 2008 - 06:56am
I kept thinking that the Missle Command guy from King of Kong, Captian Awesome or something, probably was pretty pissed at how easy they made it look for Chuck to get the kill screen.

ABC and iTunes Offers First 30 Minutes for Raimi's LEGEND - Oct 28, 2008 - 07:58am
I'm gonna go ahead and disregard the "If you don't have anything nice to say...." thing and rag on this.  It astounds me that of all the good properties that could be done, this craptacular series is being made.  I don't even know how I made it through the first four books of the series before giving it up.  Mainly because I like to finish what I start, but I could only take so much punishment.

THE DARK KNIGHT Director Returns! - Oct 28, 2008 - 07:50am
I can think of a few good "threequels".  LOTR comes to mind first, maybe that isn't fair as it is really one big story.   The Bourne movies did all three of its movies well.  I could name a few more, but I understand what he meant.   X3 was kind of crap for the X-Men franchise.

George Nolfi Penning Damon's BOURNE 4 - Oct 17, 2008 - 07:14am
In a 100 years people will know these movies suck?  Good, cause I'll be dead then and that means I can continue to like them for the rest of my life. While I normally am not a big fan of Damon, I really dig these movies.  I wish they would get released on Blu-Ray already so I could upgrade my DVDs. Also, even if the fourth pulls a Crystal Skull and kind of sucks, the first three will still be pretty good.  Well at least for another 100 years, anyway.

HEROES: Angels and Monsters - Oct 15, 2008 - 08:16am
I'm probably not as dissapointed with the show as some, because I never regarded Heros as high as many others do. I've always felt that the show seemed familiar because it seemed like the major plots were already done in the X-Men. Legacy virus story line? I know Tim Kring claims to have never read the comics though. Heros overall has always rated about a B in my mind. While I will purchase the Blu-Rays of Lost, I don't even buy the DVDs of Heros.

TV Wasteland: The Raping of Indiana Jones - Oct 14, 2008 - 07:19am
I think Southpark is one of the best shows on tv. I would partly disagree with the statement that it is "amateurish, immature, and unfunny". I will say that it can be immature at times which is part of the charm, however the writing is too consistantly good for it to be considered amateurish and unfunny. I know its all subjective to one's taste. Southpark is great in that it tackles hot button topics and current affairs but doesn't forget that its a comedy. As far as Crystal Skull goes, I don't know if I share the extreame view presented in the Southpark Ep, but wasn't that pumped about it, so I guess it was kind of a let down.Regarding Life on Mars, I watched it based solely on the fact that the title refrenced one of my favorite David Bowie songs. It was great that they even played a large portion of the song in the show, and it wasn't a cheesy cover by some current pop star but the original. As to the pilot, I thought it was ok. I'll continue to watch it but I don't think it will be a show that I can't miss.I also watched My Own Worst Enemy last night, and thought it was ok too. I'll keep watching it as well.

WOLVERINE producer says new movie is "darker" - Oct 08, 2008 - 07:15am
I hope it is cool. I'm worried though. I get the feeling that they are adding too many characters just to do spin offs. I really don't think Deadpool belongs in the first solo Wolverine movie, though I do like Ryan Reynolds for the part. I always go the feeling that Deadpool is kind of a cheesy mix of Wolverine and Spiderman, who just happen to be Marvels biggest characters.

Carell and Warner Bros. Prepping GET SMART 2 - Oct 07, 2008 - 07:08am
I haven't seen it yet, but it is in my Blockbuster queue, waiting to be sent once its released.

Michael Sheen is UNTHINKABLE and Set for Burton's ALICE - Oct 01, 2008 - 07:13am
So.... Jack Bauer. Chuck Norris. Who wins? Or ultimate teamup?

Dunst Says Yes to SPIDER-MAN 4 - Sep 30, 2008 - 07:25am
When I read the title of this article, "Dunst says Yes to Spiderman 4", my first thought was "Cinescape readers say NO to Dunst in Spiderman 4". I don't mind her as much as some of you, but she did start to annoy me as the subsequent movies came out, on and off the screen.

Top Maniacal Rumors: Ratner's Joker, Bourne Blackbeard and Foxy Aspen - Sep 26, 2008 - 07:40am
I've been around from the Cinescape days in '99. In fact I still type the web address as www.cinescape.com. Lucky for me it redirects. However, I was never a prolific poster, more of a lurker. Of all the "Super Hero" comics, the X-Men are my favorite. Since I really did not like X3, I lay the blame on Ratner maybe unjustly or not, but he was the helming it.

Top Maniacal Rumors: Ratner's Joker, Bourne Blackbeard and Foxy Aspen - Sep 26, 2008 - 07:22am
**Sports an F* Brett Ratner Hat** X3 was probably the crappiest comic movie in the last 10 years next to Superman Returns, in my mind. Singer F'd up two movies with one move by leaving the 'X' franchise. (Maybe Daredevil and Elektra sucked more than those two, but I couldn't bring myself to watch either one of those) A lot of you hate Spiderman 3, The Hulk (Ang Lee), and Ghost Rider, but they all were better than X3 to me. While Ratner is no Uwe Boll, he is not too far away.

Blu-Ray and DVD Details for HELLBOY II Online - Sep 25, 2008 - 08:04am
I would have thought this movie would have grossed more than 132 million worldwide. I figured it could have been close to 132 domestically. I saw it as a matinee a few weeks after it had been out and the theatre was still pretty full.

M. Night and Sam Hoping for UNBREAKABLE 2 - Sep 25, 2008 - 07:58am
Signs was my favorite M Night movie. I liked it because the scene when Joaquin Pheonix's character has the aluminum foil hat on, cracked me up.

Jude Law is Dr. Watson to Downey's SHERLOCK HOLMES - Sep 19, 2008 - 08:12am
I was talking about movies of his that came "immediately" to "my" mind. I thought Gladiator was sh!t. I did not think of 3:10 to Yuma, which was ok. I guess since I am not a fan of Crowe, I seem to not watch a lot of movies he is in, some of those listed I have never taken the time to watch. I recall watching The Quick and the Dead when it came out, but barely remember it so it couldn't have impressed me much. I know at one point I liked Russell Crowe, but that changed along the line somewhere. I guess since I don't have a concreate reason for disliking Crowe, it might seem a bit irrational, but I think with any actor/actress they will just rub some people the wrong way. I still think he can act, so him playing Watson would not stop me from watching this movie. I will just be more inclinded to watch it with a different actor.

Jude Law is Dr. Watson to Downey's SHERLOCK HOLMES - Sep 19, 2008 - 06:54am
Jude Law is a much better choice than Russell Crowe. Only two of Crowe's movies come to my mind quickly as good movies, L.A. Confidential and Cinderella Man.

Is Maguire a $50 Million Man? - Sep 17, 2008 - 07:16am
I think they could replace Toby Maguire if they wanted. Its the character that is iconic, not Maguire. Thus you have had multiple actors play Batman, Superman, The Hulk etc. Still I don't mind if he comes back. While I don't think he is worth that amount of money, if he can get it, then good for him. If they were to switch actors, like many have mentioned forever, I like Jake G. I also really think Joseph Gordan Levit could do a great job, and he would not cost anywhere near 50 million.

Heigel DRAWN to Action Comedy - Sep 16, 2008 - 07:29am
A few box office bombs to bring down the ego that Knocked Up created, and she will probably be cool again. I don't think she won her emmy for Grey's until after the success of Knocked Up.

XXX 3 in the Works - Sep 16, 2008 - 07:24am
I never watched any of the XXX or Fast and the Furious movies. Mainly because I thought from the trailors that they looked like stupid crap and I did not want to commit the time to watch them when I was pretty sure I wouldn't like 'em. Vin is welcome to do sequels for both of em, won't affect me as I won't be watching.

Whedon's DOLLHOUSE Halts Production for Scripts - Sep 11, 2008 - 07:51am
I think in these times, it is more important to get your initial scripts right than it has been in the past. Networks are real quick to brink out the axe now, as they can always get some idiots together for some reality crap and get decent ratings.

Fox Changing Strategies for Future Comic Films? - Sep 11, 2008 - 07:24am
I thought Affleck was pretty good in Gone Baby Gone. Casey Affleck that is. Actually, it was pretty well directed by Ben. Maybe he should stay on that side of the camera.

Fox Changing Strategies for Future Comic Films? - Sep 10, 2008 - 07:16am
Am I the only one worried that they are gonna ruin the Wolverine movie by trying to set up multiple spinoffs movies from it? Seems like too large a cast to me with too many characters. My favorite Wolverine stories were almost always when he was off on his own, or with only a few others. I hope it won't suck, because I think Wolverine is way cooler than Batman, but I just don't see how his movie will be better than Nolan's last two Bat films.

Abrams Explains Shatner Snub in STAR TREK - Sep 09, 2008 - 08:22am
I don't know, I was never a Star Trek fan. I watched the original series as a kid, and probably at least the first 4 movies, but they all seem kind of hazzy to me now. I never watched any of the Next Generation episodes or any other spin offs. While I have no interest in it, I hope those of you that do care for it get a movie you think is good. So, for somebody that does not know all the cannon and is basically an outside, neutral observer. Regarding this film, I kinda would have liked for them to give a some kind of nod to Shatner.

Val Kilmer Dealing With a FAKE IDENTITY - Sep 08, 2008 - 07:17am
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was light and good. It seems like its only a couple years old.

HBO Scraps Adaptation of PREACHER - Aug 27, 2008 - 08:35am
Kind of sucks. I dumped HBO when they dumped Carnivale. I will rent some of the series they do on DVD/Blu-Ray, but I don't pay them anything anymore. I'm also a boxing fan, but that sport is going downhill. Some of their series and boxing was really all they had going for them. I don't really care about their movies, because I rent or buy the ones I want to see way before they are available on HBO. I loved Preacher though and don't think a single movie would be enough to do it justice. I had heard at one point James Marsden was under consideration for Jesse Custer, I think he would have not been a good choice. A younger Christian Slayter would have worked, as he already basically played the part in True Romance.

Character Returns from Dead in LOST - Aug 27, 2008 - 08:09am
If Wiseguy is going to do a NotAFan interpretation, then I'm going to do a Hanso impression. "Lost is the best show on TV, son" The thing is, I would agree with Hanso.

Universal Acquires Robert Jordan's WHEEL OF TIME - Aug 14, 2008 - 07:44am
Here is what Jordan wrote about Red Eagle in a blog on 8/22/07. The entire blog can be found at http://www.dragonmount.com/RobertJordan/?p=88 "I hear things now and then floating out in the air. For instance, I hear that word was floating about ComicsCon in San Diego that I am displeased with Red Eagle. Too true. Too very true. In a few more months that last contract they have with anyone on God’s green earth that so much as mentions my name will come to an end and we can see what happens after that. You see, among other things they forgot an old dictum of LBJ back when he was just a Congressman from Texas, when he famously, or infamously, said “Don’t spit in the soup. boys. We all have to eat.” Worse, Red Eagle though they could tell me they spit in the soup, or pee in it, if they wanted to and there wasn’t anything I could do to stop them. You can’t apologize your way out of that with me, not that they tried. There isn’t enough money in the world to buy your way out of it with me. Not that they tried that either. So they get no further help from me. Once they are completely out of the picture, we’ll see what happens." It appears that Red Eagle loosing the rights never came to fruition though.

Universal Acquires Robert Jordan's WHEEL OF TIME - Aug 14, 2008 - 07:30am
I must have way more patience when it comes to reading than the average reader, because The Wheel of Time is my second favorite series. It is only behind Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy, which many people also complain is too slow. I'm not saying I never had problems with WOT, but I am probably more forgiving than some. I also feel the last book that came out was really good and got the series back on track. If I recall correctly, towards the end for Jordan, he spoke in his blog about how upset he was with Red Eagle. He had stated that the rights were going to revert back to him as well at some point. Don't recall all the details exactly as it was in a blog from last year or so, could probably go look it up at Dragonmount.com.I would probably be excited about a movie or series, even though I think I would have big reservations about the quality. Some of you haven't heard of the series, but every book in the series spent time on the best seller lists, with most being at number one. I would guess that it is the most successful fantasy series after LOTR and Potter, though I can't quantify that, like I said that is my guess. If you're exicted about Sam Raimi adapting Terry Goodkind's craptacular books, well WOT seems to be what Goodkind hamfistedly modeled his crappy series over.

New TV Spots for Diesel's BABYLON A.D - Aug 11, 2008 - 07:19am
I have to agree with Flint, Vin Diesel does appear to suck. There are some movies he has been in where his "suckiness" did not kill the movie, Saving Private Ryan for one. Yet, when he is the star, generally that means the movie is gonna suck or just be irrelevant.

Keitel Leads Department in LIFE ON MARS - Jul 25, 2008 - 10:20am
I just want to say that "Life on Mars" is one of my favorite David Bowie songs.

Matthew Fox Ready to Lead BILLY SMOKE - Jul 01, 2008 - 07:18am
An assassin who kills assassins? What they should do is a serial killer who kills other serial killers. Oh wait, Dexter beat them to it. Anyway this sounds like a rental. I like Matt Fox too, mainly due to Lost. Speaking of Party of Five, we all knew the hottness of Jennifer Hewitt and Neve Campbell, but who would have guessed Lacey Chabert would grow up to be such a hottie?

NO HERO #0 - Jul 01, 2008 - 07:05am
I likes me some Warren Ellis, so I'll be checking this out.

WOLVERINE Ready for War in New Set Pics - Jun 12, 2008 - 08:40am
Like Moz72, I remember reading an interview of Glenn Danzig by Stephen King's wife, sometime in the early 90's, where he mentioned he had been approached to play Wolverine and that he would do it if the script was good. I doubt he would have been good in the role though. I saw him in the Prophecy 2, he played an arch-angel or demon and I think his lines consisted of just a couple words, and not very well done. He also is probably an asshole, since the Misfits went through like 20 members in just a couple years. A few years later, I read that Russel Crowe turned down the role because he felt the character was too similar to the Bud White character he had just finished in LA Confidential. Then came Dougray Scott, who I felt was a horrible choice. Hugh Jackman will work for me even though the height is off. If they ever recast, maybe they could take a look at Scott Caan after he ages a few more years. He seems short and stocky enough. Though I don't know if I have seen many of films, so I don't know where his acting talents truly are, but his dad is a good actor so maybe he has some of that.

Raimi Wants to Direct SPIDER-MAN 4? - Jun 06, 2008 - 07:05am
Anything that has the possibility of delaying the craptastic Sword of Truth books from being adapted is ok with me.

Top Maniacal Rumors: Spidey Confusion, Mandrake Mistakes & Office Robots - May 30, 2008 - 01:04pm
Hanso, gotta agree with you about Lost rocking last night, I can't share your joy for the Lakers beating the Spurs. I know a lot of people don't like San Antonio's style of ball but they are the team I adopted when I got into basketball, (no team in St. Louis). I got into the NBA when I was in the Navy and liked the Spurs because of David Robinson and Dennis Rodman, it was in '95 I believe. Now back to Lost, the best show in the history of TV as far as I'm concerned. possible SPOILERS follow. Do you think Ben with the crowbar was a shout out to Half-Life? They share a few common themes, and the Half-Life devs actaully placed a Dharma style logo in HL2 Ep 2 screen shot at http://kotaku.com/gaming/easter-egg/lost-found-in-half+life-2-310606.php As far as Marvel staying away from the R rating, I guess I'm fine with it. Mainly because the one character I would like to see get an R rated movie would never happen. That would be the Wolverine movie. Wolverine is really an R rated character, but is just too popular to lose the under 17 viewers.

GTA IV Actors Complain on Salaries - May 22, 2008 - 08:53am
I don't know if I have much sympathy for the guy. GTA4 was going to sell like gang busters regardless of who did the voice work. There have been other games with steller voice acting, the Legacy of Kain series comes to mind, that weren't as succesfull, and it would be curious to see what those voice actors got paid for the sequels where they had become integral to the series. I feel the guy got paid well for what he contributed, and he is getting recognition on top of that. Perhaps he should have tried for a better deal up front.

Rob Corddry is PROJECT A - May 15, 2008 - 07:29am
I think Rob Corddry is pretty funny. Still probably just a rental.

TV Wasteland: Fox “Inkubates” Animation - May 13, 2008 - 07:43am
Southpark is still my favorite of all the animated stuff. It just always seems that it is always fresh, funny, current, and poignent.

TV Review: LOST - Cabin Fever - May 13, 2008 - 07:30am
Good episode, but Locke always seems to iritate me. I like him, and I like his episodes, but the way he expects everyone to believe in his destiny talk is what gets me. I mean if he wants Jack to believe in his destiny talk, perhaps he should share the fact that the island healed him. There have been clues of the island being "special" to the others, but I think most rational people would try to find logical answers to explain what is going on. Locke just expects them all to take his word for it. For many, if you take their point of view on what they have seen from Locke, it is understandable why they don't trust him. I think I am starting to agree with Hanso, about Claire being dead. I hope not, but it would explain Miles' sudden fasination with her to a point that Sawyer had to put the "restraining order" on him.

More Time to Get LOST - May 09, 2008 - 07:16am
Is it wrong to be glad that Cain failed so that Nestor Campbell was able to reprise his role as Richard Alpert? Apparently the Lost producers waited too long to sign him to a long term contract as they were not sure how they were going to use the character, and he signed on with Cain. Cain's producers and/or maybe CBS (I think) were not going to let him appear on another network. Their excuse was that they wanted viewers to associate him only with Cain. Hopefully the Lost powers that be, got him locked in for the duration. I'm happy because other than a few slow episodes to start season 3, Lost has been the best show on TV in my opinion.

Verbinski Gets BIOSHOCK - May 09, 2008 - 07:07am
I liked Bioshock and all, but I can't help but thinking it gets a little over rated. I do think the story was above average, and among most video game stories it does stand out as one of the better ones. I bought the game, beat it (got all the achievements) and traded it back in) scytheofluna, as far as Half-Life goes, I'm pretty sure that Valve has said they don't ever want to licence it for a movie. I believe they want the games to stand for themselves. Part of the reason they have never had Gordon Freeman talk, is that they want the player to feel part of the story. The Half-Life games are my favorites by the way.

Top Five Reasons Old-Fashioned Books Aren’t Going Away - May 08, 2008 - 07:39am
I still have a couple of years left, being in that "target" demographic, and I have been reading regularly for pleasure since I was about 13. I've undoubtedly spent a few thousand dollars in books in that time. I reread my favorite books multiple times and have had to replace many of them. I'm interested in e-readers, as a supplement to my book collection. I would like to be able to carry an entire book collection around with me. However, I am not ready to get one right now for various reasons. From the reviews I've read the Kindle needs to make a few design improvements. Apparently it is easy to accidentally turn the page, due to button placement. I also feel the Kindle is overpriced at $399, I would probably pay $200 for it. The biggest reason I am not jumping into e-books right now, is book selection is lacking. I also think Amazon's pricing model is a little broken. Ten dollars for a new release is fine, when compared to the hard back prices. I feel that it is too much for older releases, that you can buy cheaper in paperback. What I would really like is a complimentary e-book version when you buy a hard cover edition, because I still would prefer the hard cover to any other edition for collection purposes. Maybe in a few years as it evolves e-books will be more worth while to me, right now though, all it has done for me is piqued my interest.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 20th Anniversary Edition - Apr 22, 2008 - 12:41pm
I know there were some areas on the Blu-Ray where it brought out flaws in the production. One I'm thinking of is a sky shot, where you can clearly see that it is segments of painted sky glued to a wall, or something similar to that as you can see the joints of the different elements. ... Still I prefer the Blu-Ray because most of the movie does look better than my SD copy. I'm pretty sure the Blu-Ray also has a better audio track as well. I didn't have the box to see if they updated the audio as well, but it seemed to sound better on my home theater.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 20th Anniversary Edition - Apr 22, 2008 - 07:40am
I know a lot of people who don't like this film and that generally kids won't like it. I was around 12 or 13 when the movie originally came out, and I liked it then. I own the regular DVD, and just rented the Blu-Ray version. I will most likely buy the Blu-Ray version and give my old DVD copy to my sister.

Running the Property Dispute Gauntlet - Mar 31, 2008 - 07:07am
I have The Burning Man trade, and it is pretty good. Then again, my screen name (with slight misspelling) is taken from a Tad Williams book, so I was predisposed to liking it. As far as Robert Jordan's work is concerned with The Dabel Bros, I think they were in partnership with Red Eagle Entertainment to do the New Spring comic. It never got finished (and I never got a refund for the unfinished issues) and in one of Jordan's last blog posts he mentioned that the rights to his works would soon transfer back to him. At least that seems to be what I recall him writing. I do know he was really dissapointed with Red Eagle.

CBS Cancels JERICHO Again. - Mar 24, 2008 - 07:06am
Not really trying to take a shot at anybody, but the show needing bigger stars? Pretty dumb comment. Heros is a pretty popular genre show, who were the big known stars in it that everybody knew when it started? Ali Larter probably equalled Skeet Ulrich in noteriety. Lost, pretty popular show, known names in it, Matt Fox and Dominic Monahan. Neither were what I would call huge stars at the time the show started. How about the Buffy show, it was pretty popular and yet there were no real stars when it started. Anyway it sucks that Jericho got cancelled. The show was admittedly slow starting last season, but it got better. Did I think it was the best show on TV? No, but I thought it was probably better than most other crap. Maybe if CBS had slapped CSI: or Survivor: in the title it would have had a chance.

Wait for It... - Mar 11, 2008 - 10:21am
I haven't bought a DVD in quite a while, maybe 1 in the last 2 years. I do buy Blu-Rays, and if something I want to see does not get released in Blu-Ray, I rent it and play it upscaled. I have been irritated in the past when I bought a DVD only to have an alternate version released a few months later that I would rather have.

Toshiba Officially Drops HD DVD Format - Feb 20, 2008 - 07:12am
Hanso - "Do those downloads you guys talking about do 1080p? " None that I know of do 1080p. Engadget or Gizmodo ran a comparison test a few weeks ago on SD movie downloads vs HD movie downloads vs Blu-Ray/HD DVD. The HD downloads looked about the same as an upscaled standard DVD. The Blu-Ray /HD DVD versions were head and shoulders above all the downloads. They were also focusing on picture quality in the review. There was most likely a huge audio gap as well, though that would probably depend more on individual home theater audio setups.

Toshiba Officially Drops HD DVD Format - Feb 19, 2008 - 07:43pm
Ok, when you can give the millions and millions of people like my parents who live in a rural area access to reasonably priced broadband then perhaps digital distribution can go prime time. The 53% broadband penetration is not how many have it, it is how may have access to it. Then they will need to match the quality of the physical media, and keep the file sizes at a reasonalbe level for download. When they can add the special features and interactivity the physical media provides, then they will be closer to mainstream. Then there are some broadband providers running pilot programs to set up their pricing by bandwidth used. This will not integrate too well with movie downlads should it come to be a norm. Music unlike movies are a much more portable media in their use. How long is an average song, three or four minutes? the average movie, an hour and a half? People listen to their music as they drive, jog, work, etc. Music can fade into the background a little easier than a movie. Watching a movie is more of an "event" than simply listening to music. There is also the "single" aspect of music. Perhaps you want one song off an album but don't want the entire album. Being able to pay only for the song you want is a bonus of digital distruibution for music. I personnaly download a lot of songs, but if I want the full album, I still buy the cd and convert the songs to mp3 myself. My opinion is that movies and music can't be considered one and the same in this instance. My opinion is that digital downloads will eventually become a viable source for Hi Def movies, one day. I just don't think it is going to replace physical media. I also don't think it will be widespread within 10 years. Which gives HiDef media time to become established.

Strike Season - Feb 19, 2008 - 09:59am
Actually, I normally wouldn't pay a huge price, but Lost is my favorite show so for it I will. I like Heros a lot, but I doubt I'll ever buy it. As far as double dipping and buying Blu-Rays of the first two seasons should they come out, I would do that because I could then give my DVD copies to my younger sister who also loves the show, but is in college and doesn't have much disposable income. I didn't start watching 24 untill season six started. I didn't want to buy 5 seasons worth of DVDs so I joined Blockbuster online to watch them all. I don't buy a lot of the complete TV series seasons. I own Lost, The Office, a couple of Scrubs, a couple Buffy's that were gifts, and some Aqua Teens. As far as my movie DVD/Blu-Ray collection. I don't think I have ever double dipped. I waited for the extended cuts of LotRs because I knew they were coming. If I own a DVD and later on a "new and improved" version comes out, I don't replace my original, though I may rent it to check it out.

Toshiba Officially Drops HD DVD Format - Feb 19, 2008 - 08:46am
In the week before the Warner announcement, I was conidering buying a stand alone HD DVD player or the 360 add on because I wanted some Universal and Paramount titles. After Warner's announcement, I decided against going format neutral, figuring it was inevitable that Blu-Ray would win. As far as digital download goes, I don't feel it is near being ready for prime time. Broadband penetration is only around 53% in the US and I don't it is ready for the load large scale digital downloading would put on it. There is a large quality difference in picture and sound in the current digital download of HD content and HD media such as BR and HDDVD. Many people want a physical product that is easily portable.

Strike Season - Feb 19, 2008 - 07:34am
It probalby will be the same price, because they know suckers like me will buy it anyway. I will even double dip, and rebuy seasons 1 and 2 if/when they get put out on Blu-Ray. Then I'll sell or give away my DVD versions.

Toshiba Officially Drops HD DVD Format - Feb 19, 2008 - 07:29am
mckraken - If you are planning to buy into Blu-Ray right now, I would suggest getting the PS3 and the remote control that is sold seperatly. (the regular PS3 controller also works as a remote too, I just like the seperate one better) I know a lot of people don't want to use a game console for their movie player. However right now the PS3 is the most future proof of the players available as well as the best bargain. There are basically 3 Blu-Ray profiles, 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0. The 1.0 profile is kind of like current DVD players, in that it plays movies and current style special features. Profile 1.1 adds more feature rich interactivity through the use Java programming. Profile 2.0 is basically the same as 1.1 in that it adds internet connectivity to the player. The PS3 is easily upgradable through firmware updates and is currently at the Profile 1.1, though since it already has the internet connection, you could say it is 2.0 already. The PS3 also has a decent upscaler that will make regular DVDs look better.

Gambit is Cast, Dead Pool Update for WOLVERINE - Feb 19, 2008 - 07:15am
I too would rather there be no Gambit in a Wolverine movie. I would prefer it if there were no X-Men in the movie. In a Wolverine sequel, it probably would not bother me. In the first Wolverine stand alone, I would like it to be all Logan.

Strike Season - Feb 19, 2008 - 07:05am
I was wondering what Season 4 of Lost would eventually cost on DVD/Blu-Ray back when they cut it from the normal 22-23 episode season to a 16 episode season. I feel that since 13 episodes is just a little more than half of the previous seasons, the price should be equivilently around half the cost of the previous seasons. As far as fitting all 13 episodes on one Blu-Ray disc, it could be done but the quality would suffer. I have Season 3 on Blu-Ray and I think there are about 3 or 4 episodes per disc and it looks fantastic. There is a little greeting on the first disc by Lindelhoff and Cuse talking about it being the best possible version of Lost available. So I don't think they would compress them more to be able to squeeze more on to one disc. My guess is that it'll be a 4 disc set. Three discs just for the episodes and 1 disc with 1 or two episodes and special features.

First Glimpse at New WOLVERINE - Feb 14, 2008 - 07:14am
Couldn't any character with a healing factor be super buff if they wanted to be. They could work out hardcore and not have to do any of the waiting between workouts to hit the same muscle groups. They could just do an entire body workout everyday.

LOST: Premiere & Confirmed Dead - Feb 09, 2008 - 08:30am
I agree with mlaforcer, Lost is still the best show on TV, in my opinion. I think these first two eps of season four are realy good and actually has me dreading the fact that we are only looking at getting six more before we have to wait again. I think now that they have an end date for the show, they are planning on using the remaing episods to come to a "satisfying" conclusion. I think the producers even cited X-Files as a reason they wanted to set an exact end point in advance so they could work toward it. SPOILER following -- well kind of, If you recorded the episode and pause it or screen cap the scene when Hurley looks into the cabin in Beggining of the End, you will notice the guy sitting in the chair is none other than Christian Shepard.

TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: Heavy Metal - Feb 06, 2008 - 06:56am
So when are they gonna review last week's episode of Lost?

Raimi Moving Forward with WIZARD'S FIRST RULE - Jan 30, 2008 - 07:27am
I don't know. I think this is a horrible move by everyone involved. I read the first four books in the series and that was all I could stand. It's the only series I ever started that was just so craptacular that I could not finish. Maybe if Raimi does it like Army of Darkness, and doesn't take itself seriously at all, it has a chance of not making me vomit. There is no way Goodkind would allow that to happen as he seems to think his series is mankind's greatest literary achievment, well next to Ayn Rand anyway. I feel sorry for whoever they get to play Kahlan, as the actress is going to have to do about 1000 "almost-rape" scenes. Though she gets to fight a chicken who happens to be evil incarnate. For more discussion on the hack that is Goodkind go here. http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?s=94a35e016e9cf58a9c9ae502e2450ba7&showtopic=25312

Edward Norton: "Utterly Unrelated" to Previous HULK - Jan 24, 2008 - 07:30am
I agree with Ponyboy about discussing politics here. The content on Mania, is escapism entertainment for the most part. I prefer it that way. I get enough politics/news from other places and in real life. As far as Hulk goes, add me to the list of people who actually enjoyed Ang Lee's Hulk. I also think that the casting of General Ross and Betty Ross was better in Ang Lee's film. William Hurt is a good actor, but I think Sam Elliott fits the character better. Of course he could surprise me. I don't think there is anyway that Liv Tyler will be better than Jennifer Connnelly was though. I think Edward Norton is a step up from Eric Bana. Eric Bana has been fine in the few movies I have seen him in, but Norton is one of my favorite actors and I've seen him play a much wider range than Bana. Physically I think he fits the part a little better as well.

Braveheart: Special 2 Disc Collector's Edition - Jan 08, 2008 - 08:31am
Braveheart was the first movie I ever saw twice in the theater. I got bored and watched it by myself. Later I went with friends and actually had to convince them to watch Braveheart. I have the original DVD release, but I won't buy again unless it does come out on Blu-Ray. There are already rumors that Paramount has an out clause in their contract that stipulated that if Warner switchs to Blu exclusive they could also end their HD DVD exclusive agreement. Update: WB Is Now Blu-Ray Exclusive, HD-DVD Responds - Jan 05, 2008 - 06:22pm
Merin, you're entitled to your opinions but you don't speak for everyone. I am a Blu-Ray owner. I am not rich but I don't live paycheck to paycheck by any means. I enjoy home theater and video games and have the disposable income to support it. So I have a HDTV set up and I think it is awesome, but that is me. I much prefer my 360 for games, but I still think my PS3 is an awesome entertainment device. It is most certainly not a POS. I am of the opinion that only one standard format ultimately will be what is best for consumers. I'm a fan of the content, not the format. I believe with one format we will eventually get more HD content. I also don't think digital HD downloads is as close a reality as many seem to think. The quality of current HD downloads are no where near Blu-Ray or HD DVD. They are compressed more to decrease file size, so the video and audio is inferior. Even at the current file sizes they will require quite a large amount of bandwidth if used regularly by enough people. Downloads will still require equipment in some form. Many consumers want a physical media that they can easilly transport. I also would be more wary of DRM on downloaded content. The main issue with downloading HD content, is the availability of broadband throughout the country. Many people live in rural areas where there is not a viable form of broadband availble to them.

The 10 Most Awesome Movies Hollywood Ever Killed - Jan 04, 2008 - 07:15am
I was wondering why everything seemed vaguely familiar as I was reading the article. Then I read that it was from Cracked.com Seems like this was posted there quite a long time ago.

Top 5 Top 5 Lists of 2007 - Dec 31, 2007 - 09:15am
All these type lists are always subjective, that's why I always take them with a grain of salt. On my list Tolkien would be #3. I never really read untill an 8th grade english teacher overheard me good naturedly ribbing a classmate for reading The Hobbit. She choose that as the next book we were going to read, and I got hooked on reading because of it. So I do like Tolkien a lot. However, my list would not be based on who accomplished more, rather I would base it entirely on who I enjoyed reading more. After multiple re-reads, my list would still go Williams, Jordan, then Tolkien.

Top 5 Top 5 Lists of 2007 - Dec 31, 2007 - 07:29am
I think you'll catch a lot of flack for putting Jordan at number one on your book list. I don't have a problem with it though as it is number two on my list, only behind Tad Williams' Memory Sorrow and Thorn trilogy. I'm sure many will have near apoplexy at you putting Jordan ahead of Tolkien. Tolkein may have gotten me to start reading the genre years ago, but I'd rather read Williams or Jordan now. As for the rest of the book list, I have never read any of the Harry Potter books, and have no desire to do so. I'm interested and will read Martin, I'm just trying to wait till everything is published so I can read it all in one go. On the games list, I agree with The Orange Box, mainly because Half-Life is my favorite game of all time. Portal was incredibly cool too. By the way is this written by Pat the Original Lemming from Westeros who writes Pat's Fantasy Hotlist? If so that is cool, 'cause everybody should know that Goodkind is a hack.

LOST Season 4 Debuts January 31 - Dec 16, 2007 - 04:16pm
Just got done watching the 3rd season of Lost on Blu-Ray and it was pretty nice. The image quality was so good that at one point I caught Charlie breaking the small E string on his guitar and could see the string pretty clearly. Just like when I watched it on TV, I can't wait for the new episodes. I concur with NotAFan's quote, "D*** you stike! D*** you to H3LL!"

BOURNE ULTIMATUM - Dec 10, 2007 - 09:00am
The Bourne movies are the movies that tempt me into possibly buying an HD DVD player. I am a Blu-Ray owner and would rather stay with one format, but the Bourne movies make me waiver in that conviction.

Fivesome Cast For Apatow's YEAR ONE - Dec 06, 2007 - 09:36am
Lets see. I have liked most of what I have seen from Apatow. I like Jack Black, and usually even watch his stinkers, even when I suspect before hand that they will be bad. I feel the same way about Dave Cross as JB. Mr. Show was awesome. Oliver Platt is a talanted actor who makes the most of all his roles, even the crappy ones, ie. that wrestling movie with Scott Caan and David Arquette. Micheal Sera, good in Arrested Development, good in Superbad. He did some funny stuff on the DVD extras portions of Knocked Up and Superbad. Vinnie Jones made a better transition from pro sports to acting than most atheletes. I think I've only seen 4 films he has been in, and he was above average in all of them. Christopher Mintz-Plasse made his debut in Superbad, and pretty much stole the show, so he is good to go for now. I don't know who Juno Temple is. So I will at least pay attention to this as it gets developed further. Rather than saying it looks like it is going to suck with the limited info I've read about it.

HEROES: Powerless - Dec 05, 2007 - 09:41am
Like Hanso, I wonder if a shot to the head would kill Adam. After all, Claire's blood brought HRG/Noah back from a shot to the head, right through the eye. Granted Claire and Adam's powers may be a little different, but they have shown that blood from either of them can heal others. I also agree with sportwarrior, Maya is freaking hot. When she first got shot, I thought it was a cheap way to appease fans that hated her. I guess I never felt that hate for the character, but I also did not overly like her either. I fine if she stays and gets developed.

Some Hard Truths to Face - Nov 16, 2007 - 09:35am
Mystar? Bobstyle? Defensive much? I gave my opinion. I did not actually praise Jordan in my last post. I only mentioned that Goodkind seemed to blantantly "borrow" elements of WoT for his own books. Many websites out there have documented the similarities, all of which seemed to have been published first in WoT. Though now I will sayJordan's books, while having flaws, are for me a much better read than Goodkind's. That is a personal opinion, it is kind of hard to argue. Regarding Tolkien and Martin, I have read Tolkien, and I enjoyed it. While I do enjoy Tokien, I don't consider him the best. Although I plan to read Martin, I haven't yet, so I'll have to read and find out if I like his work or not. In early Goodkind interviews he claimed his books were not of the "fantasy" genre. Later on, he stated he has redefined the fantasy genre. He also stated that fantasy was basically "world building" and that he was not a "world builder". So I guess he can do what ever he wants with his "f$%@#ing world". I don't enjoy it, and won't be "visiting" it again. I don't think I'll be going to Middle-Earth anytime soon. However, have fun in Richard Rahl's world of big boobed dominatrixes and sado-masichism.

CAPTAIN AMERICA Returns Briefly For Special Issue - Nov 13, 2007 - 04:20pm
Though I read a few comics when I was younger, I did not start reading them regularly untill I was in the military. On my second tour in Bosnia, boredom would set in and I would read pretty much anything at our little Exchange. I ordered several issues while I was there and still read comics to this day.

Some Hard Truths to Face - Nov 12, 2007 - 09:19am
I read through the first 4 books of this series. From the beginning I had problems with it, but I kept going. After book 4, I was done. Goodkind is a hack. His prose and writing stle are hamfisted and blunt. Early on in his books, I could not believe he didn't get sued for plagiarism, since I could see poorly done semblances to the Wheel of Time. If you like your protagonist to kick in the jaws of children, to rip out spines, to have "his thing rise up," to give multiple long speeches which are the author's way of communicating his Objectivist ideology, then you may like the SoT series. You also may like that the principle female character gets "almost-raped" on a regular basis. Like I said, I did read the first four books, I suppose it is possible the rest got better. However, from what I've read on the 'net, they got progressively worse.

HEROES:ORIGINS Scrapped For Now - Nov 01, 2007 - 09:57am
Well I never really liked the idea of the Origins show. It just seemed like they were trying to milk a succesfull franchise ala CSI.

HEROES: The Line - Nov 01, 2007 - 09:48am
Ok episode, but again it seems like I really didn't almost half of it. This season I find myself really only interested in Matt Parkman, Peter, and Bennet. As much as I liked Hiro from last season, I am kind of disliking his storyline this season. It seemed like it had a chance at first but now it seems clearly set as filler or a time waster to keep Hiro busy. It is also pretty predictable. A lot of people seem to hate the Mexican Wonder Twins of Death, while I don't think they are great, they don't bother me. They don't incite that irritation that the addition of Nikki and Pablo in Lost did for me. I really can't stand West, Claire's new beau. The guy just seems smarmmy and unlikeable. Maybe her Texas pal will develpe some powers too and they will meet up. It seems people gain/access their abilities at different times, so its always possible.

HEROES: Fight or Flight - Oct 24, 2007 - 09:26am
I kind of agree with the review. This was episdode was ok but not great. Was it just me or did it seem like it had a ton of commercials, more than normal? I'm sure it clocked in at the same time as most episodes, but it just seemed they were going to break a lot. I agree with Ponyboy, not every show/movie has to have a political agenda. There are shows that do this and reflect current events. I like that there are some shows that focus on the story they want to tell. If they were to write in current political events, it could easily bog down the show and polarize viewers. Some shows are good as a form of escapism. I get enough current events when I watch the news and read the newspaper. Also, suppose they did focus on current events and took the opposing view to yours?

HEROES: The Kindness of Strangers - Oct 17, 2007 - 09:16am
This episode was just kind of blah for me, definetely not an A. Does anybody else dislike the character, West? He has become like nails on a chalkboard to me. I agree with metalworker on the Watchman thing. Maybe not to the same extent, but the underlaying plot is similar. Someone else on this board pointed out in another article that they now seem to be doing the Legacy Virus type storyline. Will Ages of Apocalypse going to be season 3?

STARSHIP TROOPERS Sequel, VACANCY Prequel? - Oct 09, 2007 - 09:03am
Kilmer did Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and its budget was only around $ 15 million and also had Robert Downey Jr.

Jorja Fox Leaving the CSI Team - Sep 28, 2007 - 09:15am
I only watched a few of last season's episodes and I missed the opener for this season, but this isn't bad news. I couldn't stand the Sara Sidle character.

Update: Jessica Biel Out of WONDER WOMAN - Sep 25, 2007 - 09:01am
I don't know. Jessica Biel is hot and all, but there is something about her I don't like. Though she surprised me in The Illusionist, as she didn't ruin the movie as I expected. Still my opinion really doesn't count as I have very little interest in a JLA movie. My comic geekdom, layed mostly with Marvel and DC's Vertigo lines. Also, because this movie has an ensamble of characters and will most likely clock in around the hour and a half mark, I think many of the characters will not be developed and relegated to the background. To Clownican and your Nathon Fillion casting choice, that is funny for me as it reminds me of a little banter a friend of mine and I have. We joke around in a similar way except the actor extroidanair is always George Wendt (Norm from Cheers)

Trio Collide in Futuristic FRANKLYN - Sep 21, 2007 - 09:39am
Cinescape's... er, Mania's practice of posting pictures of hot chicks to get me to read a news item that I would normally skip, sadly works everytime. I'm such a sucker.

Giovanni Ribisi On Board AVATAR - Sep 21, 2007 - 09:32am
I pretty much agree with everything Whiskeymovie said. I like Ribisi for some reason, despite the fact that he is in a crazy cult. I also don't know enough about this movie to get excited about it yet. Isn't there a cartoon called Avatar? I thought that was what this news article referred to.

Spoiler: Another Character Returns to LOST - Sep 21, 2007 - 09:28am
It is still my favorite show on TV. I've got Season 3 pre-ordered on Blu-Ray. I wish they would release the first two seasons on Blu-Ray as well.

Pitt a Contender For THE FIGHTER - Sep 21, 2007 - 09:24am
I'm a boxing fan and a Ward fan. While Ward would not be considered a great fighter along the lines of a Ray Robinson or Ray Leanard, he had many great fights. He was always entertaining because he always came to fight. I wonder who they will get to play Arturo Gatti? They can't make a movie about Mickey Ward and not have Arturo Gatti in it. The last three fights that Ward was in. Those fights put the movies to shame. If a movie fight was choreographed like those fights, you would be calling it the fakest thing you had ever seen, because it was so back and forth, ebb and flow. Their fight trilogy is considered one of the best, right up there with Ali/Frasier.
