The classic
STAR WARS trilogy of films are indeed coming to DVD this September.
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Lucasfilm have made
last week's rumor official and announced a September 21, 2004 release date for
EPISODES IV - VI. While the films aren't specified, it's believed to be almost certain that the cuts of the three
STAR WARS movies that will be on the DVDs will be that of the Special Edition films released theatrically in 1997.
The movies will be sold together as part of a box set, along with a special fourth DVD that will contain bonus material, previously unseen footage from the movies and a new documentary. A similar approach was staged for last year's release of the
INDIANA JONES trilogy. Specific details on what material will be on that fourth disc, as well as the price of the box set, are yet to emerge.
"We are currently in the process of restoring and remastering all three titles for the DVD release, so we're still working on details of the marketing strategy," said Jim Ward, Lucasfilm's Vice President of Marketing and Distribution to
The Hollywood Reporter.
Ward also offered "On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the
STAR WARS films in a fresh and fun way. We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."
