The first "Munster" in NBC's plan to reboot the classic series has been added this week. TV Line reports that Eddie Izzard (Valkyrie) has officially jumped into the production to play the role of Grandpa Munster. In the original 1960's series, that role was memorably played by Al Lewis. The story also reports that the network and executive producer Bryan Singer have changed the title of the series from "The Munsters" to "Mockingbird Lane".
Singer is currently preparing to shoot the pilot and will also be a showrunner alongside Bryan Fuller. Universal Television is producing the series which should begin shooting sometime this summer.
This new version is said to be an edgier and slightly darker take exploring origins of Herman and Lily Munster (originally played by Fred Gwynne and Yvonne De Carlo) and how they arrived at the famed 1313 Mockingbird Lane address. The original series, produced by Universal Studios, aired 70 episodes from 1964-66 on CBS.
