Izzard is Grandpa Munster

Munsters Reboot now called MockingBird Lane.

The first "Munster" in NBC's plan to reboot the classic series has been added this week. TV Line reports that Eddie Izzard (Valkyrie) has officially jumped into the production to play the role of Grandpa Munster. In the original 1960's series, that role was memorably played by Al Lewis. The story also reports that the network and executive producer Bryan Singer have changed the title of the series from "The Munsters" to "Mockingbird Lane".

Singer is currently preparing to shoot the pilot and will also be a showrunner alongside Bryan Fuller. Universal Television is producing the series which should begin shooting sometime this summer.

This new version is said to be an edgier and slightly darker take exploring origins of Herman and Lily Munster (originally played by Fred Gwynne and Yvonne De Carlo) and how they arrived at the famed 1313 Mockingbird Lane address. The original series, produced by Universal Studios, aired 70 episodes from 1964-66 on CBS.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Im cool with Izzard... I would like to see more casting before making  any decisions... Soooo Munsters goes "darker and edgyier" and Dark Shadows becomes a comedy...  WTF?!?!

Wiseguy 3/21/2012 8:35:13 AM

Yeah muddseye I was thinking the same thing. Comedies are being retooled as dramas and dramas as comedies.

I hate to be hating so early on but I highly doubt I'll be tuning in.  Not just because of the dramatic change of a series I loved as a kid but because I purposely limit the amount of shows I want to follow and nothing from this calls to me

Muddseye, I feel like you. Dark Shadows funny!?! Munsters serious!?!

But the producers of this reboot are very good and I certainly will be watching when it debuts.

hope they keep the same theme music!!

Hey, as long as it's better than the abominable "The Munsters Today" series from the 80s, I'm good. I think Izzard's a great choice, hope the rest of the cast is equally good.

SmokingFrog77 3/21/2012 2:53:02 PM

Fuck yeah, one of the greatest theme tunes ever! Sounds interesting despite the tonal changes.

Oh I dont mind a darker edge to a horror tv show... Im sure Ill check this out, IM more upset with DS and the way its protrayed in its trailer

I will give this a shot.  A remake straight from the 60's is a bad idea like someone mentioned the 80's series.  Could be the next Battlestar Galactica if done right.

I actually think "edgier and slightly darker" work better for something like the Addams Family than it does the Munsters.  I'm willing ot give it a try though.  Isn't Eddie Izzard a comedian as well as an actor?  That would kind of fit.

Also hasn't the Munsters/Addams Family already been successfully redone as "The Osbornes"? Queue rimshot.

I think that this reimagining of the Munsters as a darker, edgier show could work. Izzard as Grandpa is inspired casting. It will be interesting to see where they go with the rest of the casting.
