Jack Ryan Reboot launches Trilogy

Plus Spin Off News

You now have a rough date to mark on your calendar for the return of Jack Ryan, in the movie tentatively titled (you’ll never guess) Jack Ryan.  Deadline reports Paramount has scheduled the reboot for the fourth quarter of 2013, with the hope of kicking off a Jack Ryan trilogy led by Chris Pine, not to mention a spinoff that may star Tom Hardy as fellow spy John Clark.  Kenneth Branagh will direct Jack Ryan and play the villain.  Keira Knightley is the female lead, Jack’s wife Cathy.  Kevin Costner recently accepted the role as the CIA liason to Jack Ryan and John Clark, which puts Costner in both Jack Ryan and the Clark-centric spinoff Without Remorse, and may even headline his own movie in due time.

But for now, let’s focus on Jack Ryan.  Hit the jump for story details.

Branagh recently described the concept as “an original story that allows us to understand how Jack Ryan develops into a CIA analyst, before joining, and perhaps even joining, the CIA. It’s a very contemporary action thriller set in the here and now.”  The launching point—first mentioned in Tom Clancy‘s book The Hunt for Red October—is a helicopter crash that wiped out a Marine platoon.  The 23-year-old Ryan was the only member to survive.

Paramount has been developing the reboot since at least 2009, shortly after Pine made a big splash in Paramount’s very successful Star Trek reboot.  Over the last three years, the script has passed through the hands of several screenwriters to the point that the studio decided to let Pine shoot Star Trek 2 first, losing director Jack Bender in the process.

The last Jack Ryan movie (Ben Affleck‘s 2002 effort The Sum of All Fears) is now over a decade old.  Paramount understands the value of the property, and has taken the time to prepare their big plans for this franchise.  With the ever-charismatic Pine at the center, this could be something special.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Okay so now everyone is going to try and copy marvel with thier universe group? Im a big tom clancy fan so Ill at least wait for a trailer to see if this will be good or not. I honestly dont think trying to link charachters together from a certain story line with spinn offs with different chartachters is a good idea

vitieddie 8/23/2012 6:50:53 AM

I'm not sure how it is copying marvel. It seems to be a character from the same book (john clark). Its been done before where a side movie develops from another movie. Hope this new movie is good ... loved the Harrison Ford ones.

This actually has the potential to be quite exciting, if done right. I personally much preferred the John Clark stories to the Jack Ryan stories. I'd love to see Rainbow Six or Without Remorse brought to life.

Yeah, Without Remorse would be great.  Considering Hollywood's love of revenge movies with a dude going around killing the dirtbags responsible for his girlfriend's death, I'm kinda surprised they haven't done it yet.

Sounds like it could be good, but please come up with a more imaginative title than "Jack Ryan."  Sounds like a self-titled album, not a movie.

Give us Rainbox 6 with Tom Hardy as John Clark!

dojen1 8/23/2012 10:42:30 AM

Yeah, "Jack Ryan" doesn't do it for me. Look at how the simple title "John Carter" hurt an otherwise enjoyable popcorn flick. If they'd subtitled it "Warlord of Mars" box office would've been double.

Also, I'm a bit worried about unimaginative casting. Chris Pine and Tom Hardy have already appeared together in a film. Pine is already an iconic franchise character (James T. Kirk). Hardy is about to be (Mad Max). There are PUH-LENTY of other gifted actors out there people. Come get me haters, but I think Ben Affleck and Liev Schrieber deserve another shot at the Jack Ryan/John Clark characters.

Very interested in a Tom Hardy spinoff as John Clark. But I don't like Chris Pine that much. He's a little weird looking to me for some reason, and I'm not a fan of his roles so far. I'm not gonna think about it much right now, but it really seems like there are other actors out there that would have been better choices.

Bleh, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy...pass.  The only saving grace to this is Kenneth Branagh.  He'll be an awesome bad guy.

Well it all sounds good to me.
