Directors Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp have set up a new sci-fier called DISTRICT 9, says Variety. The trade reports that Jackson and Blomkamp spawned this new idea from their work on getting HALO made, before that fell apart at budget approval time. Blomkamp plans to direct this production set to begin spring of 2008 while Jackson produces through his company Wingnut Films. The plot details are being held for this sci-fi concept until they reveal it to distributors later today at AFM. Weta Workshop will be handling the visual effects for the production.

"For the last year, my team and I have had the pleasure of working very closely with Neill," Jackson said. "He has a passion and a command of the language of cinema that will result in 'District 9' fascinating people all over the world."

When plot details are released, we'll pass it along..

PJ has earned enough respect from me that I will pretty much go see anything he makes. Bring it on, Peter!

Ditto. Until proven otherwise I'll give anything he's attached to a chance.

Most certainly, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see the studio execs responsible for shutting Halo down drawn and quartered. The latest game broke sales records for every other entertainment property in history, and they shelved it out of fiscal cowardace. Jackson could have made Halo the film that changes the paradigm when it comes to game/film adaptations, and for once the genre could have had a celluloid winner, rather than the usual tripe we get. I actually hope PJ won't have to devote too much time to this project. He has a lot of work to do in prepping the HOBBIT.

I never understood all the hate for Kong, actually. What was that about? I thought that movie had some very minor pacing problems but on the whole it was pretty spectacular. I think sometimes it's just fashionable to hate on people, places, and things irrationally, and nerds seem to be really jaded these days...

I for one hated King Kong. Every sequence was drawn out, overdone, and in some cases nonsensical. Kong vs a T-Rex? Awesome. Kong vs. TWO T-Rexes? KICK ASS. Kong vs. THREE T-Rexes? You're kidding me, right? A 15-minute action sequence that should've been about half that. The entire brontosaurus stampede could've been lifted from the entire movie and nothing would've changed. The same goes for the shootout with those monstrous insects. King Kong would've been spectacular had it been about 135 minutes instead of about 200 minutes long. Anyways, now that Halo the movie is dead I would be curious to see what Blomkamp can do as a director. I wonder if the title may have to be changed a little since I first thought of a French film that came out a couple years ago where a guy had to "break in" to Paris to retrieve a stolen nuclear bomb. I think it was called District B13. I suppose a change won't be that necessary though since the French film was hardly something most Americans would remember.

I hope this is more than just alot of walking in space to melt old jewlery. But if he is actually doing something original again like FRIGHTENERS and DEAD ALIVE more power to him but I know its not going to be as good as 2001 cause well that will never happen.
