Jackson Catches THE SPIRIT

Lionsgate and Odd Lot Entertainment are in talks with Samuel L. Jackson to play the supervillain in THE SPIRIT.

The story revolves around Denny Colt, an ambitious young cop murdered in the line of duty who under mysterious circumstances is reborn as the masked mystery man known as the Spirit.  Jackson would play the Spirit's nemesis, the Octopus, a meek lab assistant who reinvents himself as a psychotic nightmare that kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face. The Octopus' tentacles reach into every aspect of crime in fictitious Central City, a city he plans to wipe out.

Frank Miller, who wrote the script, will direct this adaptation of the comic book by the late Will Eisner.

For a second, looking at the headline I thought Jackson was going to play the Spirit. That would have been all wrong. The Octopus would be a great role. His face would always be in shadow.

Um, already Miller, a self proclaimed fan of the series, is deviating from the comic. Why use Jackson...only for the name? Because I think he is wrong for the part...if you've read the series. Besides, he has already gone the supervillian route.

Miller will stay true to the...errr...spirit of "The Spirit." I don't think it'll matter if Octopus is black or white as long as the character's origins and personality remain true to the comic. We should all know by now that comics don't get made into movies without some changes to canon.

what is this some sin city / Unbreakable rip-off

Zack, aside from the fact that The Spirit pre-dates both of those by more than 50 years, I fail to see how this is an Unbreakable rip-off.

Not talking about "black or white"...just that I think his voice, speech and personality are all wrong for the character.

Good news, but I 'd really love to see Sam reprise his role as Mr. Glass in another Unbreakable film. If they can't get back Bruce Willis, so be it. They can always focus the story on Willis' son going up against Sam Jackson.

The point is, I always wanted to see Mr. Glass go up against the hero...to see how that is portrayed in the real world environment that Unbreakable occurs in. It is really time for a much deserved sequel, however, I do hope that M. Night and Bruce Willis come back to do the next film along side Sam...but Sam, to me, is the most interesting of the characters...in terms of his view of comic book myths and how they relate to real life.

So, I say yes to Sam playing the villain in The Spirit...but you know, when it comes to Unbreakable, Mr. Glass is one of the best cinematic villains, and or, characters of all time, hence, it would be a waste to abandon the character. Sam could build a whole damn franchise out of Mr. Glass fueled films. It is time that we get to see him in full villain mode. Let's see just what he is fully capable of...and what our hero has to do to stop him!!!

MetalWatero, I'd also love to see a sequel to Unbreakable. With both Willis and Jackson. But if it came to fisticuffs, it would be the most one-sided fight EVER!
It does beg the question: What would a villain do if he knew the identity of a hero and his weaknesses?
Jackson does give this 'Spirit' project some serious cred. I think fans are willing to give this property some consideration, even though it predates just about everyone.

The whole point of Octopus is that his identity is never revealed, right? So if Jackson's basically playing a voice, then I don't see that as making a significant change for the character. If he was the Spirit, that would be wrong casting, not just because he's black, but because he's too old.
