It’s never too early to cash in on a recently departed. That’s the rule of box office law for this report, with Sony Pictures landing on top. And while the new documentary tribute, Michael Jackson’s This Is It, didn’t have the numbers that some insiders were tracking pre-release, it did score a victory over the slow Halloween weekend by grabbing an estimated $21.3 million since Friday and $32.5 million since opening up on Wednesday. Early speculation had the film taking in more domestically, with word of mouth mentioning that a number of houses were reporting sold-out showings with advance sales but the final results were here somewhat low key here in the states. That said, the LA Times reports the film did score up a monstrous $101 million worldwide in its first five days of release, a definite victory for a film which really just used previously shot rehearsals.
Landing in 2nd place is the latest trendy phenomenon known as Paranormal Activity. In its sixth week of release, half of that limited, the film continues to perform at the box office to the tune of another $16.5 million on 2,404 theaters. Dropping only 21% from its previous victory, the ghostly tale has a domestic cume of $84.7 million. Paramount executives are thrilled considering the very low production costs associated with the release.
Overture Films crossed the budget lines this weekend with their thriller, Law Abiding Citizen, taking in another $7.3 million for 3rd place. With the latest estimates, it has grossed $51.3 million in three weekends of release against a pricetag of only $50 million.
Universal Pictures continues to pile onto their Vince Vaughn feature, Couples Retreat. The comedy actually moved up a slot to 4th place by taking in $6.0 million on 3,026 theaters across the nation. This has its domestic tally sitting at $86.6 million, a full $16 mil past their budget of $70 million.
And now we come to Saw VI. Even with the weekend centering around horror-themed events, the sixth installment in the Jigsaw franchise found itself dropping 61% in its second weekend, taking down the 5th place spot with only $5.5 million. It seems clear the franchise is showing a little wear & tear with audiences but the question remains whether that really matters. Like its predecessors, the franchises’ profitably is still there because of the absurdly low price tags. This film reportedly only cost $11 million to produce and has grossed $22.8 million in ten days.

Next weekend sees the wide release of four major titles so it’s clear our top 10 list will be changing quite a bit over the next two weeks, with next weekend’s top spot likely focusing on a 3-D Zemeckis release. His re-imaging of A Christmas Carol will be at least 3,500 conventional and 3-D theaters, is rated PG and has a run time of only 1 hrs. 36 min.

Alright! I'm the first one to post a comment.  I am proud of this comment.

I saw MJ movie.  It was good.  Music is great as usual.  The Thriller and Smooth Crimminal stuff they were getting ready to do would have been epic.  It's really a shame.  I heard a rumor that there is a MJ double in the movie.   I could not spot him.

Vamp assistant I also saw.  I liked it well enough and hope for a sequel.  Only a tad on the side of camp.  Special effects not overly used.  Story was good too, about vamp's that don't kill for blood and those that do.  The freak show side was pretty cool also.

I saw Vampire's Assistant, too. It didn't do so well in the box office numbers, so that means it's a disappointment. I liked the movie, though. Also saw Paranormal Activity. That one is still doing good. It'll probably make about 100 million all together, making it the high grossing indie horror movie since the Blair Witch something something. :)

Well, deserved for the king of pop!!

DrSpiderhead 11/2/2009 6:23:26 AM

Yeah, I saw the MJ movie too.  I couldn't spot a double... ... if he had lived to pull it off it would have blown people's minds. I would have definetely paid good money to see that live, then again I'm a concert fiend.

People are fickle...if Jackson was alive this thing never would have made any money this weekend.  He had become a joke up to this point but his death ironically resurrected his career.

Saw Paranormal Activity....maybe I'm getting too old. The teeny popperers were all freaking out during the movie but I thought it was just okay.  I hate shakey camera movies to being with but even the story didn't do anything for me.  Didn't find anything scary about it and I felt they tried to rip off the Blair Witch project.  I will say that Katie gal in the movie did a damn good job of acting.  I believed she was really scared.  Would like to see her in future movies.

I'll end up watching this movie but it will be when the dvd hits stores. I'll bet it will be just in time for christmas rush too.

If not I'll be pretty surprised.

Hobbs, knock it off!! quit bein' a hater man. Michael had legions of fans whether you liked him or not. I understand u may not have been a fan but the man's dead... What more do u want? Let his fans old and new alike celebrate his talent. Nothin' wrong with that.

Hobbs 11/2/2009 9:56:22 AM

How is that hating on MJ?  I would take that bet every day of the week and twice on Sundays in Vegas that if he was still alive his movie wouldn't have made squat this weekend.  If you don't think his death has raised the value of him and his works again you are living on the Never Never land Ranch.

And I'm personally going to miss MJ because South Park can't use him anymore....that Death Episode about all the celebs was freaking hilarious.

Whitelotuspriest 11/2/2009 10:08:51 AM

Well, anytime a musician or celebrity dies there is always a boost, no doubt, but Michael was successful in everything he did. Name a concert that he did that wasn't successful? His least successful album was Invincible and it still sold like 9 million records I believe world wide. Ask how many artists would kill to sell 9 million records? I disagree brotha if he were still here this movie would still be successful and the concert would have been huge. My man thing with what u said was how u called the fans fickle for going to see the movie, I think people have the right to celebrate his life and shouldn't be called fickle or anything. Havin' said all that I ain't mad at ya brah so don't take anything I say personally. Just thought ya comment was a lil' brash is all.
