James Cameron Updates on His Sci-Fi AVATAR

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Source: CBS's The Hour

It's been a while since we had an update on the long-awaited sci-fi epic Avatar so director James Cameron has answered the call and updated us all courtesy of George Stroumboulopoulos' "The Hour" on CBC. You can check out what the director of Terminator, Aliens and Abyss had to say on his next adventure into the genre of sci-fi in the video player down below. The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald. As usual, Cameron penned the screenplay for which he is directing.

Plot Summary: "Avatar" tells the story of an ex-Marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.

Avatar will hit theaters December 18, 2009.

Finally some news on this. In about 10 years or so, I am 80% sure Cameron is also gonna have a lending hand in the next change in film technology, be it films being entirely shot on IMAX cameras, 3D televisions in homes, whatever. Looking forward to Avatar.

And all you need to know about that interview video is that at 10:54 in, he says "Dark Knight was chomping at our heels for a bit", which cracked me up (did you hear that HANSO?). But then he says "we're gonna re-release Titanic theatrically in 3D", which SCARED the shit out of me considering he looked dead serious. Hey, I wouldn't be surprised! lol

That's George Stroumboulopoulos' "The Hour" on CBC (or the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.), not CBS. Gawd!

Haha, bas.

Adding that "Gawd" on the end gave me the chuckles this morning. Thanks...and fixed.

And yes, watching him bring up The Dark Knight was amusing. He would be well within his rights to re-release Titanic one day but this is Cameron we're talking about here. As you hint to, Pib, he may have only been joking with a semi-straight deadpan facial expression.

Love Cameron, the best director bar none IMO. He's a smart guy by making this film and letting the studio foot the bill while he develops his new technology.
I can't wait for this film, still a full year away.

And if TDK gets too close to Titanic he should re-release it. Afterall the only way TDK gets close is with multiple releases anyway while Titanic only had one run.

Not a lot of info on Avatar. I can't wait for this. I just hope it's not all about the CG. Maybe if it is as good as he says it won't be.

I can't believe that it will be 12 years since Cameron has given us a movie. It's about bloody time. He is the balls and the taint of filmmaking. He makes amazing movies. I cannot wait to see what he serves up.
