James McAvoy joins "Star Trek XI"?

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Friday, January 26, 2007

According to the British tabloid Sunday Mail, James McAvoy is likely to be given the role of Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the upcoming J.J. Abrams film, Star Trek XI.

"[The studio] thinks [McAvoy] could form a brilliant double act with Matt [Damon, rumored to play Kirk]," said the Sunday Mail. "James's star is on the rise after The Last King of Scotland. He's Scottish and has box-office appeal, so he fulfills both criteria."

KJ's Take:  Obviously you have to take this with a very large grain of salt as the British tabloids are hardly a reliable source.  That said, they do have their informants and you can't rule out the possibility.

The casting does make sense as it seems likely Paramount will cast someone with a Scottish accent in the role.

Too much suspens !! SPOCK ! That s all we want to know, who will be SPOCK !!! Look to me th LXG effect, for be sure Connery will be the star, you surround him with second hand actor, instead of matt damon, shane west, instead of jhonny depp , Stuart Townsend ect...So for be sure matt damon will be the star, i am afraid the rest of the crew will be second hand, that s my beleive !

Are you anxious to hear that the guy who plays Sylar on HEROES is officially Mr. Spock?

Okay, I thought this movie was going to be about young Kirk and Spock, even though there has never been ANYTHING in the series to suggest that they knew each other prior to serving on board the Enterprise during the classic series' "5 Year Mission" which ended up only being 3. Now it seems as though they might just have EVERYBODY appear in the film. Anybody else think this is sounding a little retarded? Don't get me wrong, I'm a Trek fan, and I'm sure I'll shelling out my $9.00 at the box office just like everybody else, but I'm dreading the amount of disappointment I'm expecting to be hit with. And if they ARE insisting on recasting EVERYBODY, why do they have to bring in Matt Damon as Kirk? I like him and all, but he is just not Kirk. I don't know who could be Kirk, but not Matt Damon. The feeling I have of Matt Damon playing Kirk is very similar to the feeling I had when Nicholas Cage almost played Superman in the late 90's. I think he's a great actor, but he's NOT Superman. I don't mind the actor who plays Sylar for Spock though. Interesting casting there.

There are so many rumors swirling around this project. Paramount has to love the press the franchise is getting. I wouldn't be surprised if the studio itself was behind a lot of these so-called leaks. It's free publicity, and gets movie fans talking about it's hobbled golden cash cow again. McAvoy would be fine as Scotty, I can see Heroes Sylar as Spock I think, and who knows about Damon. I just want Abrams to make a great Trek movie, regardless of who's playing the roles. I would like to see Shatner and Nimoy in the film playing Kirk and Spock at some point in their lives.

The guy who plays Sylar is actually Zachary Quinto. Christopher Eccleston plays a man whose powers are invisibility...and I can see Quinto playing Spock...he has the look for it.

I'd be much more interested in this film if it was set in the last two year's of Kirk's first tour on Enterprise. For clarity's sake, that would make the setting between the last original series episode and The Motion Picture. As of now I'm expecting this to be a crap film.
