Author Peter Benchley passed away on Sunday at the age of 65. He was probably best known for writing the novel JAWS.

Benchley's 1974 novel was turned into the summer blockbuster of 1975 by then new director Steven Spielberg. The film caused millions to become afraid of swimming in the ocean.

Though he was pleased with the outcome of the film, he "kept telling people the book was fiction, it was a novel, and that he no more took responsibility for the fear of sharks than Mario Puzo took responsibility for the Mafia," reports his wife Wendy Benchley.

Peter Benchley also wrote such novels as "Peter Benchley's Creature", "Beast", "White Shark", and "The Deep".

He also wrote "The Island" which was a pretty good underrated movie starring Michael Caine. You'll be missed!

I'm reminded of a show I watched as a youngster, called 'That's Entertainment' hosted by Tom Bosley. Has anyone else heard of this? It was aired on channel 7 on a Saturday, I think. I still remember the theme music for it and the montage of imagery from films, the ones that stand out are at the near end of the credits rolling up, quick flash of Sophia Loren, to Princess Leia and finally the death star explosion.

I will miss Benchley greatly. Jaws was an amazing book! "Beast" and "White Shark" could have been good big screen movies as well. The TV movies did them no justice. As far as "Beast" goes, it was cool that Benchley was still alive when we finally shot video of a giant squid.
