If you listen to Movies for Nobodies or you've ever had a conversation with me about the Batman Movies you know I tend to have a small chip on my shoulder.
First off, why is it okay for those who read novels (and see said film adaptation) to be upset about the film, but I get the stink eye for picking on the Batman films? It's not like he's not been around for years and years and had multiple stories and versions to choose from. They've even changed his suit in the books.
Look, Batman Begins was a pretty good flick. The first half was actually pretty freakin' great. Then I have my issues. I'm not going to go too much into specifics, but there are just some elements that really didn't work for me.
Anyhoo, here is my current rant.
Ledger's Joker. Listen, I'm sure he's going to do a bang up job. I'm just amazed at how everyone jumped onto the "Holy Dead Guy Batman" he's the best actor on the planet - bandwagon. Before Brokeback came out, most people could give a two shakes about him. Who? That Knight's Tale guy? etc etc (For the record I'm the guy who actually enjoyed A Knight's Tale and thought Ledger was a pretty good actor even back then). Now, he's gone and rocket himself into greatness along with the likes of Kurt Cobain. "Hey man, nice shot."
Like I said, it looks as though the character he's creating is going to be pretty psychotic, which is cool, I just think it's funny how this movie has used his death as a springboard. Hey, can we see the film first and then praise him? Just a thought. No offence Heath.
Again, believe it or not, I'm looking forward to seeing The Dark Knight. It does look pretty sweet and I'm a Batman fan. The Joker's look is actually, kinda, maybe a little, sorta starting to grow on me. I guess I'm a little bit of a traditionalist and I need to get over it, I know. The more I think about it, the more I think the "crazed" look Heath and Nolan are using might end up working well. I hope.
Part two. What's up with the Batsuit? First off, what's with all the BMX pads on there? And really, if every single comic version...you could actually see the F'N Bat symbol on his chest! Dude, how hard is it? Make the suit dark gray and have the symbol black. I'm not asking for a bright yellow outline, though it worked in the Keaton film and no one cried. Regardless, to quote a friend of mine, Batman has become this "Black-Blob" on the screen and we can't tell what he's doing half the time. Wait, it's a good thing you added all those bits and pieces to the suit, so we couldn't see them. Nice thinking. Though on the plus side, it seems they finally are going to let Batman turn his neck a little. Kudos...it only took how many movies to get to that?
Last...a small complaint. Why did we need to bring back a "made for the first movie" character? Yes, Gyllenhall is a good actress...and yes she is nice to look at...but really? We were able to lose each girl that Batman told his secrete identity too in the other films, why not this time? By the way, good thing it's a secrete! All I can hope for is that the Joker off's her and pisses off Batman...that will work for me.
Another thing...You know, if you needed a love interest for "Begins"...then why not have Holms play Talia (Ra's al Ghul's daughter)? It's practically written for you! Right there in the damn comic. I guess somebody needed to say they added something to Batman's mythos?? Whatever. Talia would have been perfect...she's torn between her father and the Bat. Plus, Katie actually kinda had her look. Oh well.
You know, I'm sure that if I was in control of these films I would have screwed them up more. And they are great looking movies, so in that aspect Nolan has done a great job. I guess I just don't understand why some decisions are made and the hype is starting to get to me.
If you've made it this far...thanks for putting up with my worthless rant. Just needed to get it off my chest. Now, I'm off to buy my Dark Knight tickets. I heard that there are some really good performances in it. Oh, and I'm a fan.
