Mary Jane Out of Amazing Spider-Man 2

Cut then Recast?

By Robert T. Trate     June 20, 2013
Source: Comic Book Movie

Yesterday the news arrived that Shailene Woodley’s part of Mary Jane Watson had been cut from the Amazing Spider-Man sequel. At first we believed this to be a creative reason or perhaps they realized the story was just too bloated with characters.

It seems that might not have been the case.

Comic Book Movie is reporting that now Marc Webb and Sony Pictures will be recasting the role of Mary Jane for further installments. Already part 3 (2016) and part 4 (2018) have been given release years.

It looks as if other the major news outlets have a statement about it one way or another.

Marc Webb, via The Hollywood Reporter: “"we all love working with her"... "It is likely that Woodley will not return and that the part will be recast."

The Wrap claims: "Woodley will likely be busy with the sequels to her upcoming sci-fi movie "Divergent" and may not be available, so the role may have to be recast."

Hopefully, for whatever reason this is a good move. The cast already rivals that of X-Men: Days of Future Past so one less character has to be a good thing. Now would anyone like to place bets how long it is until that footage surfaces?

Synopsis: The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

Can't say as I'm overly disappointed. She doesn't seem to have that "wow" factor Mary Jane is supposed to have. I've never seen her act, though, so I can't say for sure. It worries me a bit that they are making such major plot and cast changes this late in filming. Does not bode well.

@fft5305, Roger that.  Dropping directors, or adding writers and editors is a sure sign that production is faltering, but dropping a significant character after filming and during the editing process can't be good either.   Considering that I wasn't terribly impressed by Amazing Spiderman and there isn't much I like about casting Jaimie Foxx as Electro (or using Electro at all, at least as the headline heavy), I'm becoming lesss and less likely to see this one in theaters.

fft agree mostly. Not too familiar with her but I feel the same way from the little I've seen.

I disagree in that it's late in the game. The film is an entire year away, plenty of time to cut the fat and streamline the film which is one of the accounts I read.

But I also agree with those assuming they didn't like her or the chemistry was just off so it could be a mixture of reasons I guess. And why is anyone so sure Divergent is getting a sequel because to me the film sounds terrible. Anyone read the book?

From what I heard, she was barely in the movie to begin with.  Little more than a cameo.  Which is good, with all the other cameos they are planning.  So far, I've heard:

Felicia Hardy (Black Cat) (forgot who they casted)

Adrian Toomes (Vulture) - Colm Fiore (which I actually like for this role)

I'm fine with throwing in some of the alter egos of these villians as cameos, if only they are setting up the big finale with a throwdown with the Sinister Six!!

More importantly, Marvel is reporting that RDJ has signed on to portray TS/IM in both The Avengers 2 & 3!  Great news!

Yes, if they are going for the Mary Jane as Top Model the Woodley girl was cute for an average teenager but not model quality.

But we already know who's the best actor for jumping into a movie and replacing an actor after most of its been shot...

get Michael J. Fox on the phone!

Mary-Jane is basically a supermodel and as Spidey is played by a taller actor this time, it makes sense that she would be played by someone who more fits the supermodel sterotype, with BIIIG  hair as well...

When it comes to superhero villains I have only one thing to say - The more, the merrier. X-Men has proven it can be done right, just as long as the director keeps his focus on the story (I still need a serum developed which erases Spiderman 3 from my conscience). It will also be nice to move away from the every-villain-has-to-be-a-scientist trend for Spiderman. I think The Lizard was great but I also believe it's about time to introduce some characters from other backgrounds (Black Cat, Rhino and Electro are all great choices). That said, I still think The Vulture will be a kick-ass opponent as well. I also believe that Gwen and Felicia will be more than enough for Parker/Spidey to deal with in AS2, so the decission not to include Mary-Jane is probably a wise one. And it should be a lot more interesting to see a new relationship develop with a lady villain than just another "girl next door".

If MJ's role was only a bit part (as I suspect it was), then this should really have little to no impact on the film.  While Woodley would not have been my pick for MJ, I feel absolutely terrible for her.  First all of the fan backlash, now her role has been cut (and those two things are probably related, if you ask me).  That is part of the world of show business, but I still feel bad for her.

Also, I'm not buying the fact that Woodley's schedule is the reason she may not be brought back.  If she was cast as MJ, then she would have been expected to be in all of the sequels anyway.  That is all just movie studio spin doctoring for them wanting another actress to play the part, if you ask me.

Woodley is an absolute cutie, but no smokin' hot MJ.  (Ditto for Kirsten Dunst.)

Oh my goodness.  I just saw on another website where Sarah Gadon is joining the cast of ASM2, possibly as the new MJ.  Woodley looks more like MJ than this girl does.  Sigh...
