How I became a KJ apologist.

(Thu 03/29/2007 05:07pm)

Maybe this should go in the Kurt Russel article, as that seems to have become the designated place for this topic.

To start, I didn't always agree with KJ, like everyone else.  I do think the behavior of many members of this community was rather appalling the other day.

I never understood the argument that KJ should just post his take "down here" like everyone else.  How would that be any different?  You would still read his comment, and you would still bash it mercilessly.  Although, I do wonder if that's actually true.  I suspect a lot of people were just jumping all over the opinion so hard because of where it appeared.   If Karl took the easy route and espoused the most popular opinion, no one would have complained about "KJ's Take."   It's allowed for one to not be status quo.

The reality is that many internet movie news sites involve giving the news with some manner of editorializing.  Nobody involved in this particular business is an objective observer/reporter.  If they were, they never would have gotten involved in the first place.  People don't do this unless they love film in its various forms.  Moreover, KJ put his take at the bottom of the article, making it very easy to skip over.  He could have written his opinion into the actual body of the article (as others do) and then you'd have no choice but to read it along with the news item.

How many people that ripped KJ apart have, at some point in the comments section, made the argument  that everyone is entitled to their opinion?  Based on my experience over the several years I've frequented this site, it's a lot.   Falling back to the KJ can post his opinion down here like everyone else does not change the fact that the entire argument is hypocritical (unless you don't think everyone is entitled to their own opinion).

It's one thing to suppress comments like those that Spyder made since they neither contributed to a discussion, nor expressed any manner of personal opinion.   KJ's Take was nothing like Spyder's vapid copy and paste marathons.  I did, however, sometimes question whether Karl was expressing his genuine opinion or intentionally taking a Devil's Advocate type stance to incite activity in the comments section.  If he was, it certainly backfired on Kurt Russel day.

I would have understood an argument for less baiting (something I believe he did), but bitching so much as to suppress his opinion just was not right.  KJ has every right to post his opinion anywhere he likes on the articles for which he is responsible.  I did not care about this issue until two days ago, but now I am a KJ's Take apologist.

I will admit I'm not a big fan of movies ... I'm here to write about manga, anime and occassionally cross-over into the video game realm. But after witnessing the reaction to KJ's Kurt Russel comment, I was kind of bewildered. I've been through my share of passionate fandoms, but nothing quite like that. Swearing? Leaving the site over an opinion? Maybe his comment was out of line (or maybe not, like I said I don't pay attention to Hollywood), but still. A bit extreme.

Just wanted to throw my agreement with this sentiment here.

And say sorry to KJ on behalf of those who never will.

Well Karl... He kicked my dog.

With that classic line out of the way I may continue. I figure that it is fine for him to add the comment so long as it stimulates conversation on the subject in a positive way. I will admit that I feel that the Kurt Russel article should have been something that was geared towards the movie, rather than the slagging of the actor. I agree with his other point though of just getting the movie done already.

I wasn't involved in the Kurt Russel fiasco but I did go back and re-read that entire bruhaha after it spread on to other threads. I usually didn't mind K.J.s Take if it was productive or constructive but when he just mindlessly writes something down like "I have no opinion on this film but I saw a trailer and it looked stupid" it's really irritating especially when you don't think otherwise. Sometimes he just seems to be writing something down JUST to write something down.

Yeah, but it was his opinion, as annoying as it may have been. If he said something that you wanted to hear, no one would be complaining. People in the posts have written way more moronic and ignorant opinions and people either comment about it or ignore them. Why not do the same thing with him?

I wonder if it wasn't so much K.J.'s opinion itself, but the way he comes off. K.J. does have a habit of; as chemikillgod says of 'writing something down JUST to write something down'. If you don't have an opinion, don't give one. Also, give your honest opinion. Don't just write what you believe will anger the most people.

KJ owes me a Wii and a PS3.

Is that Wii contest ever ending?

KJ has proven time and again that he is not cut out for the position he has. He's just going to have to take it if he continues to pump out such ludicrous commentary. If he doesn't like it, he can stop. Why is this a problem?

I liked KJ's Take, even when I didn't agree, and if he was posting some comments to spark a little debate, I'm ok with that. Everyone deserves to post their opinion; that's what makes this sit entertaining and often informative. I really hope KJ hasn't gotten a verbal beatdown from his boss or an emotional one that stops him from adding his take. I hope he comes back strong.
