TV Guide posted an interview with J.J. Abrams in which he talks about the upcoming season of LOST and his upcoming film STAR TREK XI.

TV Guide writes:

TV Guide: What can you tell us about the new season?
Abrams: A lot of the season's already figured out, and it's incredible. The stories are amazing.

TV Guide: Will you have time to be involved in Lost's third season?
Abrams: I definitely look to be more involved this season, certainly more than I was last season [when directing Mission: Impossible III]. I look forward to directing an episode, and I'm planning on writing some.

TV Guide: C'mon. Give us something.
Abrams: Desmond will definitely be back. He's not dead.

TV Guide: How exciting is it to find yourself in charge of resuscitating the Trek franchise?
Abrams: It's sort of surreal but wonderful. I'm producing and may direct.

TV Guide: It's been reported that the film will focus on Kirk and Spock's early days and include their meeting at Starfleet Academy. You've said that was not entirely accurate. What parts are?
Abrams: I think we have an incredible story, but we've sort of promised each other we wouldn't talk about the specifics yet. But I can say that we're actively working on it, we're in the middle of breaking the story, and it's coming along great. I'd be happy to start sooner than Paramount thinks, but not a moment before it's ready.

TV Guide: Why the shroud of secrecy?

Abrams: It's way premature. Anything I say, people will read into it and make assumptions. But we have an incredible beginning of a really dramatic story, and it very much honors the canon of Star Trek. On the other hand, it won't be like anything you've seen before.

Abrams dude, whatever you don't say, people are still going to read into it and make assumptions, so just spill it. And I like Desmond's character, so I'm glad he's not dead. Can't wait for Lost to return Brother!

You know, I wish someone would interview these guys and ask the real question "Why the hell are you making another Trek movie and why does it have to be on Kirk?". Christ, I like Star Trek, but the original cast had their time, give the other characters a chance. I had a great idea for a movie, had Q give one last challenge to the Federation, he causes an all out war between the Federation, the Domnion, the Romulans, and the Cardassians (spelled right?). Then, in the middle of battle, the Borg show up and start kicking major ass, captained by a assimulated Kirk, from whom they found his body on the planet he was buried. It could bring everyone together from Kirk to Janeway, there would be all out war for the action people, show Riker and Troi in some sex scenes for the mandatory romance angle, give us the usual great John DeLance performance and BAM, Box Office gold.

My apologies for the gramatical errors. It's early and someone used up all the coffee filters.

As a devoted "Trekker", I agree with you both. They already have a pretty solid history forged among the ST universe, and sorry to say but that was one of the reasons behind the lack of sucess for the Enterprise franchise to really kick off. Timd, there is actually a piece very close to that little plot sample you gave. William Shatners' ST book series that he wrote back awhile ago, I beleive the first book was entitled "The Return". Where something similar involving a plot I beleive between the Romulans' and the Borg, where directly after ST: Generations happens, and everyone leaves the planet where Kirk layed to rest the borg come along an do their thing.

He hasn't really confirmed that Kirk and Spocks early days at Star Fleet academy are part of the story, it may be disinformation to throw people off track. Or he may just be a clueless hack who does'nt know what the hell he's talking about.

I'm not entirely certain this movie will be about a young Kirk and Spock. TV Guide asked him point blank, and Abrams evaded the question.

However, he does indicate that he's a fan of TOS and TNG, but didn't get into the three later series. So he probably would be more interested in tinkering with the characters and situations in those two series.

JJ if tou want to do this right give the TNG crew a proper cast-off(no pun intended)

Unite the crews from the three shows set in Trek "present"! Move forward, don't retell anyone's history.
