Oz Sequel in the Works

Yes, already!

By Robert T. Trate     March 08, 2013
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

The film was just released and already Disney has a sequel in the works. This shouldn’t really comes as a surprise, but one would think they would wait until after the weekend? Mitchell Kapner (Oz The Great and Powerful, Romeo Must Die) has been hired to write the next chapter of Oz. He would penn a script that would follow the adventures of Oz played by James Franco.

“Kapner came up with the concept and ideas for the origin story of Oz, basing it on the classic L. Frank Baum books, pitching it to producer Joe Roth, who set it up at Disney, and writing the initial drafts. He shares screenwriting credit with David Lindsay-Abaire, who came on board later in the process”.

This seems like a smart move if Oz The Great and Powerful is a success. Disney missed the boat on Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland as that film became the third highest grossing film (internationally) in 2010.

Not sure, Disney "missed the boat" on Alice In Wonderland.  That film was terrible despite the box office numbers.

 Agreed Redhairs it was horrible.

" Missed the boa"t as it making another to make for money.

I like to think that someone at Disney said, "Yes, it made a boatload of money, but did you see that dance scene?"

Like it matters to  Disney really.... the money they use to make a sequel, is the same amount of money Mickey uses to wipe his ass with.

I can imagine this: (As he's taking a shit) "What an OZ sequel? Suurrrre!!! Check my pant pockets on the ground right there.... I think i have a few Million in that left pocket from last night..."

Apparently you guys don't speak for a majority of the young adult crowd who loved Alice in Wonderland (as I did enjoy it for what it was). Of course most women and girls under the age of dead are Johnny Depp fans and will pay any amount to see him in a movie. Watch for the Lone Ranger to be a medicre or horrible movie, in your opinions, but do well at the box office...

The main phrase here is "IF" Oz the Great and Powerful does well. I doubt it will do poorly at the box office though. I'd like to see a Disney version of 'Return to Oz'. I still remember seeing the old version and it was pretty bad in my opinion.

@ GothicStorm....'Return To Oz' was Disney.

A little surprised that they've greenlit the sequel already, but not surprised it'll be getting a sequel. I didn't realise until recently that Baum wrote something like 14 books set i Oz, so there's a lot of material to play with there if they want to set up a franchise (assuming Warners don't have the rights to it all).

Um, I read somewhere that they are making a sequel to Alice.

well i just watched the Great Oooze, wow what a bore!! watched it with my daughter she' diden't like it also shit most people that i talked to coming out of the show diden't care much for the Great Oooze, lol.. and Alice in wonderland was a rainbow crap fest too. damn i thought Disney would be better than that. oh well..

They're saying about 75mil opening which to me seems low when compared to the 200mil budget. Of course nowadays studios rely more and more with overseas numbers provided they're also doing that part of the distribution.

Even though they may start planning with a sequel it won't be til they see what multiple it does here domestically before really moving forward. I think a profit is pretty much guaranteed though since Disney is handling most of the distribution anyway

zilla lol, still I'll be checking it out albeit with lower expectations
