Robocop Teaser Video

Robocop returns on August 9th, 2013

The original 1987 Robocop hit theaters at a time when U.S. crime rates were rising, Cold War spending pushed military budgets ever higher, and Hollywood readily embraced bloody, hard-R violence. It was, in other words, the perfect time for a sneakily smart satire of the corporatization of the military-industrial complex dressed up as a glibly brutal sci-fi thriller, about a Detroit cop whose nearly fatal accident leads him to be transformed into a mechanized crime fighter.

Twenty-five years later, with crime rates way down, the Cold War long over, and Hollywood pretty well abandoning hard-R violence in favor of the bloodless (and more lucrative) PG-13, it may not seem like the most apt time for the upcoming Robocop reboot.

Or does it? Stories of U.S. police forces using airborne drones have been quite the hot topic of late, and in the first teaser promo for the film – starring Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Hugh Laurie, Abbie Cornish, and The Killing‘s Joel Kinnaman in the titular role – a faux ad for a mega-conglomorate called Omnicorp touts the company’s private military drones as products for use in American cities. And, besides, if there’s one thing Hollywood loves to do, it’s remake decades old sci-fi flicks with a 21st century spit-and-polish.

Check out the teaser below, which also features an updated ED-209 and a small glimpse at the new Robocop armor — do you think it makes a compelling case for a new Robocop?

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Ya know, I saw coming attraction for Total Recall and it looked good.........maybe Robocop will be good too, hopefully...

Just for the record....Dont like 3d, remakes or blueray, or Special editions....

It's like Skynet hired a marketing consulting group then asked The Umbrella Corporation to throw in ideas.

Wiseguy 7/9/2012 9:37:32 AM

I think it looks great. Can't jump to any conclusions about the film based on this though

Love ED-209, totally badass. Hope he malfunctions at some point as well and blows away some innocent bystander

shac2846 7/9/2012 9:39:56 AM

Saw this over the week man it looks damn good hope the don't eff this up.

From things I've read I'm not sure we're in for the same satire. But how could you avoid it when you have ED-209 patrolling our streets.

It seems to me they want to play it straight. I'm not sure if they should try to duplicate Verhoeven's dark humor and have the film compared to the original or just go for a new take which is what I'm assuming

DarthoftheDead 7/9/2012 10:07:28 AM

I totally agree with both Wiseguy and Shac2846

FrozenFear 7/9/2012 10:20:41 AM

Agreed with Wiseguy. Take the story and make it your own. Just don't "Burton" it and we'll keep the torches/pitchforks sheathed for now.

If they weren't going to throw in any dark humor, I'm sure they wouldn't be using the ED-209 (Hell yeah!), which looks very true to the original design. Verhoeven practically invented the futuristic TV ads in his movies, so in no way is this a rip off of Skynet or Umbrella - it's classic Verhoeven.

After seeing this, I'm looking forward to it now...
