John August to write "Shazam!"

According to the Hollywood Reporter, John August has been hired to write the upcoming adaptation of the DC comic, Shazam!.

The series focuses on Billy Batson, a teenager who becomes the superhero known as Captain Marvel when he utters the magic word "Shazam!" The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

"It's a unique opportunity to do a comic book movie where the character in it actually read comic books," said August. "What's terrific about the character is that he looks like this superstudly superhero but is really a 13-year-old boy. And to approach everything that is great about a superhero movie from a 13-year-old boy's perspective was a unique way in."

He continued, "I think we're going to be able to be really faithful to the mythology and yet make it completely transparent for people who have no idea who the character is."

KJ's Take:  I just had the most horrible flashback to the similarly titled Kazaam.  Yibbity gibbles, shake it off.

I've always prefered Captain Marvel to Superman, so I'm all for this... Hopefully they'll introduce Black Adam and we'll see some action onscreen worthy of the character.

when i read the headline for a moment there, i thought this was a remake of the Shaq movie...

I think it was the stamina of Atlas (who literally carried the world on his shoulders), not Aries (the god of war).

Sounds like the approach is Big!, the Tom Hanks movie, but with superpowers. Of course we'll have to wait for director, casting, etc. to see how this goes. I can see it working.

I think that this one could be good because you can really "break" a hero that most people have forgotten about. Shazam was always a good character, but I've always thought he couldv'e been a little darker....maybe they can delve a little more into why/how Shazam came to be?

I liked what they've done in the 52 series....and I thought the fight that the older Shazam had with the Specter was good as well.....what sucked is how they made the younger Shazam go out, like a lunatic. Black Adam's character in the series is exactly what I thought he would be though...

Man, I'm really dating myself here, but this brings back memories of the live action Saturday morning Shazam! and Isis series. I was fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to catch a rerun on TV Land a couple years ago...all i can say is you have to love the '70s!!
I think there is always room for more superheroes on the screen (big or little), and it is always nice to see someone beside Superman and Batman.

My only question is this, and it's for KJ: WHY IN GOD'S NAME DID YOU EVEN WATCH KAZAAM?! DID YOU THINK SHAQ WOULD BE A GOOD ACTOR SINCE HE WAS A GOOD ATHLETE, OR DID YOU JUST THINK THE CONCEPT OF A RAPPING GENIE WAS WAAAAAY TOO COOL TO PASS UP? SERIOUSLY, I REMEMBER "KAZAAM", YET I DON'T GET CHILLS...YOU KNOW WHY?...BECAUSE I NEVER SAW IT!

I'm not sure you can do this character right...heck, he barely translates well in the comic, much less the big screen.

He's just too kiddy, campy, and goofy to be cool.

Welcome to the club, Denver.
I also remember the show from the 70s.

I hope they can get Michael Gray to make a cameo. I know he left the biz to become a florist. It would be excellent to see that happen.
