JOHN FROM CINCINNATI: His Visit: Day Three

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Tuesday, July 03, 2007

John from Cincinnati continues to easily be the strangest show on TV. Sometimes it is legitimately bizarre and other times it feels a little like it’s trying really hard to be strange. This week many of the characters finally start to catch up with the audience on just how strange the beach is not just John. Initially everyone who met John definitely saw something at least offbeat about him, but now after this week’s events many of the characters are finding that something unique is happening on the beach.

Mitch and Cissy decide maybe they need some time apart after the events in the hospital. All of that really falls on Mitch who’s bitterness over his injury and lose of his career have made him an angry man and now his ability to levitate has given him a new level of self importance. Mitch runs right into the arms of the young filmmaker and has a fling with her, which is what Linc, the shady promoter, wants to see happen. The problem with Linc’s plan is John who is heavily impacting many of the characters this week. John seems to have this ability to connect everyone that matters on this beach, and when he uses his ability to heal his stab wounds through Joe he also seems to be pulling something through everyone. Cass, the filmmaker goes to pick up John and bring him back to her hotel and she kicks Mitch out. Cass seemed to be in an almost zombie state when she leaves the hotel to pick up John. Could John have made this happen in order to put Mitch and Cissy back together?

We aren’t getting a lot of answers about whom or what John really is, or what his final goal is but with this week’s and last week’s episode it is apparent that initially John is bringing people together. He also seems to awakening people from the downward spiral they were heading in. The most obvious character getting an awakening is Butchie who is suddenly clean of drugs and being clean his attention is finally brought back to Kai, someone who’s liked Butchie for a long time. Mitch is set for an awakening too and it may be happening but at this point it seems to be bringing out the worst in his personality so far. I hope something happens to make him a little more likable at some point soon. Bill is becoming a favorite character of mine. He’s funny, a little like John in a way in that he babbles about a bunch of nonsense but within that nonsense are bits of things that matter, more so since his bird has started telling him what to do. In any other series saying that a character’s bird is telling him what to do might sound odd but not for John from Cincinnati.

New alliances and enemies form this week too. Bill, who is an ex-cop, sees a trouble in Freddy but apparently Zippy the bird knows better, so the bird encourages Bill to make friends with Freddy. Bill handles this task in the traditional cop way by bringing him coffee and donuts. So, why is Freddy so interested in sitting outside the Yost house anyway? As far as enemies go it seems that the doctor who sent Shawn home is being set up as an opponent to Linc, especially after their meeting in the Yost house. Did anyone notice that the doctor just seemed to walk into the house without knocking? Also, the lottery winner offers Ramon and the lawyer an opportunity for some sort of vague new partnership.

John from Cincinnati still hasn’t become one of those series that I look forward to from week to week. It’s on my DVR, so I watch it after The 4400 on Sunday nights. Again after this episode I didn’t come away excited for next week but I am still so baffled by many of the characters that I’ll watch it as long as the DVR does its job…..

I got my eye on you! I think I stayed awake thru this episode. I can't wait to see how they end it because I'm sure it won't live to see a second season.

Oh, it will live to see a second season...The Execs at HBO love it and I think they owe David Milch that much for screwing him out of his baby,Deadwood...
And so continues the Shakespearian dialog that made Deadwood so good and I am loving it...I have to watch it with my mother so I can explain to her what is being said...
It is a shame the viewers are not seeing this show for what it is, it's not just entertainment but you have to follow closely and use your mind and put the pieces of the puzzle together as they are revealed...I have no problem staying awake through this show and usually I don't like movies or shows that in some small part have something to do with God and religion but the writing of this keeps me coming back for more...
I do wish they had casted a real actor that could somewhat surf instead of the surfer they cast for Shawny because he is not that good and it shows every time he is on screen...It's easier to teach an actor to surf than it is a surfer to act....

Shawny and Kai are both horrible actors. They make that little kid from Phantom Menace look like an oscar winner.

This show is trying to hard. Also, no one seems weirded out by the weird things that are going on. They just accept them. I think I'll give it one more episode.

I agree that the actors who play Shawny and Kai, could probably use some acting lesson's. But who cares, this show has me coming back each Sunday. Ed O'Neill deserves an Emmy for his role as Bill.

If this show made any less sense, it'd be in a foreign language.

Not that this means anything, but I saw Luis Guzman at San Diego's Wild Animal Park a couple weeks ago with his family. Looks just like he does in the picture.

Haven't seen this show yet due to no HBO in my home, but I loved Deadwood.
