A week after taking down Titanic’s all-time domestic record, the last of the major records left to grab for the sci-fi epic, James Cameron’s Avatar has relinquished its top pedestal among the box office competition in 2010. While a large chunk of the adult population is hunkering down waiting for Sunday’s big game (and its expensive advertisements), Sony Screen Gems hoped to take advantage of alternative demographics this weekend and that strategy worked out just fine for Dear John.
The Sony romance put an end to Avatar’s streak of consecutive weekend victories (7) by pulling in an estimated $32.4 million in receipts for its debut, taking down the 1st place spot. Much like Disney’s 2008 Super Bowl weekend win with Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, Sony revealed their key demographic this weekend consisted of an 84% female audience and most of that audience was under the age of 21.  The Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfriend vehicle was introduced into 2,969 theaters in its opening bow, finishing its first weekend with a respectable average of $10,913 per theater. And with its budget set at just $25 million, Screen Gems has another profitable release in its books after just its first three days of release.
For the first time in its first eight weeks of release, Fox’s Avatar lands in the 2nd place spot by grabbing another $23.6 million. With the film still showing in 3,000 theaters across the nation, it came in with an average of $7,867. The sci-fi took control of its last major record last weekend by besting Titanic’s domestic score of $600 million, and with these latest numbers, has padded a $30 million lead. The film has domestic tally of $630.0 million.
Cameron’s epic may have fell short from achieving its eighth domestic victory but overseas, it still managed to maintain its champion status. The film won another $76 million on the weekend from 10,523 screens in 120 markets. Its record-setting overseas gross now stands at $1.580 billion.
Avatar’s record worldwide tally now stands at $2.210 billion.
The final new wide release of this weekend, Lionsgate’s From Paris With Love, follows in 3rd place. The John Travolta release opened up to the box office tune of $8.1 million. It debuted into 2,722 domestic theaters so it wound up with a lackluster opening average of just $2,983 per showing. The budget was set at $52 million.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ revenge thriller Edge of Darkness found itself dropping two places in its second weekend to the 4th place spot after pulling in another $7.0 million on 3,066 theaters. The latest numbers has increased its domestic cume to $29.0 million while the budget for the Mel Gibson vehicle is set at $80 million.
And taking down the 5th place spot is 20th Century Fox’s family comedy Tooth Fairy. Dwayne Johnson’s latest release pulled in $6.5 million in third weekend, increasing its overall total to $34.3 million. It needs another $14 before it can reach its $48 million budget.

I knew it was going to be a gay ass movie that did it.  And probably on the Super Bowl; it makes sense.

Never thought this weekend would take it out of first.  If anything I thought it would take one of next weeks films to do it.  Oh well.  It's not like it's going anywhere anytime soon.  It'll probably be in the top 10 for a few more weeks.

Well it makes sense that a bad chick flick movie would take down an equally bad 3D extravanga movie with no plot.

I guess they shouldn't have pulled Avatard from those 74 theaters this week, huh? The extra false revenue from the 3D sales alone from those theaters would have kept it in number one otherwise.

I can do a partial "I told you so".  I posted that it would be a romance movie to knock it off its perch, but I had the wrong weekend.  I didn't take into account that Dear John was a Nicholas Sparks flick.  Those books have a big following.

Saw Avatar for the 2nd time on the IMAX screen, and I liked it even better the second time.  My wife really enjoyed it, and she doesn't even like those kids of movies.  What is wrong with me that I'm looking more forward to Percy than the Wolfman?

I'm looking more forward to Percy as well. Wolfman just looks boring to me, I don't get the hype.

Wolf what?  Percy who?  Treat your ladies right fellas, Valentine's Day FTW!!

djphillips25 2/7/2010 5:33:29 PM

hey daforce, do you know a good chick flick?

Wiseguy 2/7/2010 5:36:48 PM

The King is dead long live the King

I must admit that I helped dethrone the movie of the year, AVATAR, yeah that's right, I saw Dear John. It can't always be about me unfortunately :) At least that means Wolfman is top priority next week, gotta give a little to get a little. Percy I'll have to catch by myself, probably a matinee

hanso 2/7/2010 6:49:59 PM

Hey yo Wise, how was the movie?

TheScriber 2/7/2010 7:06:58 PM
