10 Box Sets for Geeks and Movie Fans

What to give and get this holiday season

By Robert T. Trate     November 19, 2012
Source: Mania.com

The biggest holiday shopping days are upon us. Years ago, one would have to venture off to the store and try to pick up one of these box sets. Today, with as little as a few key stokes, these box sets can be shipped to you and your loved ones. With that idea, I included links to Amazon of all of these collections. Remember, not only do we have Black Friday, but Cyber Monday is just as important, too. I apologize that all the box sets save one are on Blu-ray. In all honestly, it is time for the upgrade. Here are Mania’s 10 Box Sets for Geeks and Movie Fans alike.
Blade Runner 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition (4-Disc Blu-ray / DVD +UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack)
Price: $49.99 to 69.99 (depending on sale price)
Order here!
There are so few movies that are ahead of their times. Blade Runner is certainly still one of them. To watch it on Blu-ray is to fully appreciate all that Ridley Scott put into his film. The brilliance of this collection is that Warner Brothers has included every single edition. Don’t care for the voice over? No problem. Curious as to the difference between the theatrical cut and the international cut? Here, you go. The colors pop, Vangelis’ score is phenomenal, and it even comes with its own Matchbox Car. You’ll still marvel at the pure work of cinema that Blade Runner is.
Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Limited Edition) [Blu-ray]
Price: $210.99 to 299.99 (depending on sale price)
Order here!
No one could possibly think you skimped on the holiday gift when they receive this collection. Here are 15 of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest films. Included are the likes of Vertigo, Rear Window, Rope, and The Man Who Knew Too Much...and those are just the Jimmy Stewart titles. This box set may carry a hefty price tag, but it is the perfect collection to get anyone through those post holiday blues. You may have one or two of these titles already. No matter.  You surely don’t have all of them on Blu-ray.
Lawrence of Arabia (50th Anniversary Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Price: $64.96 to 95.99 (depending on sale price)
Order here!
There are few movies that encompass a necessity to have everything involved with the film. Lawrence of Arabia is such a movie. Sony Pictures has included everything in this 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray. Most importantly is Maurice Jarre’s fantastic score that is as much of the film as Peter O’Toole’s performance. Both new and old fans of the film will appreciate the coffee table book included that is a historical account of the film’s production. Let us not forget you are also getting one of the greatest films of all time. When they say they don’t make them like that anymore, they’re talking about Lawrence of Arabia
Watchmen Collector's Edition: Ultimate Cut + Graphic Novel [Blu-ray]
Price: to $49.99 to 74.98 (depending on sale price)
Order here!
Many fans of Watchmen got the first release of the film on Blu-ray/ DVD. The Ultimate Cut was released later and featured additional scenes. That Ultimate Cut is now out of print. This is the only way to get it. Yet, that isn’t the only reason to pick up this box set. There is the motion comic and hard cover edition of the original graphic novel. It might seem like a bit of a gamble for the die hard fan, but, for the new fan, it just might be perfect.
Tarantino XX- 8-Films

Order here!
Many say that Tarantino films are all connected. Here is your chance find out as you can give 8 of his best to your movie nut at home. Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection [Blu-ray] UK Edition

Yes, I said the UK Edition. The American release featured an incredible book (as does this one) but it did not come with the lobby cards featured here. Fear not, as this box set is region free, meaning you can watch it in any country. The original Universal Monsters are here and ready to emerge on Christmas morning. This perfect box set features tons of bonus material and beautiful restorations of the essential movie monsters.
Bond 50: The Complete 22 Film Collection [Blu-ray]

Order here!
All right, last year Dad or Grandpa finally got himself a Blu-ray player. Now it is time to have every single James Bond film on Blu-ray. Fear not as you’ll be able to hand them Skyfall on Father’s Day. True there are some turkeys, here. However, for every Moonraker and Octopussy, you’ll appreciate Goldfinger and Live and Let Die in 1080p all the more. What better way to celebrate the holidays then with 50 years of James Bond!
Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures (Limited Collector’s Set) [Blu-ray] UK Edition

Price: In British Pounds 67.49
Order here!
Again, the UK Edition wins out. This limited edition Blu-ray box set of Indiana Jones contains all four Indy movies, same as the US edition. However, the UK edition contains the Grail Dairy, production photos, and the rubbing from the Knight’s shield. There are also a few more things worth getting. Any Indy fan was sold on the Grail Dairy. This edition, too, is region free.
The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season (Limited Edition) [Blu-ray] Zombie Head Box Set

All right, zombies are all the rage right now. It is more than likely that someone gave someone else in the family a Zombie Santa Claus Christmas ornament. Why not top that with a Zombie Head packed with the second season of The Walking Dead? This incredibly life-like Zombie Head is the perfect decoration for the under the tree. Well, perhaps towards the back after Grandma arrives. You’ll definitely win over the Zombie lover with this unique display case.
Harry Potter Wizard's Collection (Blu-ray / DVD Combo + UltraViolet Digital Copy)

It also includes the DVD editions of every film. So, here are both the Blu-rays and the DVDs for one of the most successful franchises of all time. Perfect for your viewing pleasure throughout those long winter months.

For the Blade Runner box set, I would suggest the case version instead of this version...pricy but, just a bit more.

Also, the Planet of the Apes box set with booklet is a great one also, it doesn't include the re-imagination of the saga but, all original 5 movies are in there, well worth it.

And thanks for that suggestion of Amazon.uk, somehow that classic horror is like 140$ in Canada and only 33EUROs in UK...great deal.

re: Watchmen box set (sort of). Am I the only one who still gets annoyed when comics like the Watchmen are referred to as a graphic novel? It is not, nor was it ever,a  graphic novel. It was a 12 issue limited series comic book. Nothing more. Every collected edition of it is a trade paperback, a trade collection, or what have you. Nitpicking, i know, but that shit has always bothered me. In a world where comic books have become the source of so much pop culture, can't we please just get it right? For those of you that really dont know the difference, a graphic novel is an ORIGINAL work, a collection of previously published comics is just that, a collection, something to read in the bathroom so you dont wreck your original copies. Nuff said.

I'll take the Blade Runner and Walking Dead box sets for sure! Blade Runner is one of the best movies ever made! Right there with Ridley's other masterpiece, Alien. Oh, and of course Prometheus!
