Johnny Depp is not in I AM LEGEND

Date: Tuesday, September 19, 2006

According to IESB.net, Johnny Depp is not in the upcoming Warner Bros. film I AM LEGEND.

IESB writes, "Remember the casting news that Johnny Depp had been cast in I Am Legend? According to our "on-set" source this rumor is pure BS, Depp never signed on and bottom line, he is not in the film...

"The IESB can confirm that the Phillip character is not in this script and that this movie will actually be closer to The Omega Man film than the original 1954 novel written by Richard Matheson."

Will Smith is still set to star in the film for director Francis Lawrence. The film is aiming for a November 21, 2007 release.

so in other words, its going to suck. I started reading I AM LEGEND and it is a great book. I rather see that than just a remake of Omega Man, which is still a good flick.

What were you thinking in the first place Ponyboy? The movie has WIll Smith in it, so you know it is going to suck cause there are going to be tons of one liners to follow after the tons of action scenes which will act as distractions from the lack of plot and character development and horrible direction.

I am about halfway through the novel, and I have to say that it is absolutely fascinating. Thus far it is an extremely well-written account of how one man deals with an unthinkable situation. Despite the title, there's no grand heroics, over-the-top action, or anything else that rings false - the protagonist is incredibly human and has to deal with his very human reaction to recent events, notably depression, anger, despair. I haven't seen any of the movie adaptations, but I can say that the book is a great read - do yourself a favor and pick up a copy or borrow it from the library.

The book's classic, and although I'm sure it's going to be Hollywoodized on the big screen, I think Will Smith has the acting ability to give the lead character real depth. Will he get the chance? Probably not, but I'm trying to upbeat. The Vincent Price version was terrific, and Omega Man was great too (a childhood favorite for me), although it's very dated now with its message.

I've got hope for this flick with Francis Lawrence attached...he made "Constantine" a very watchable, serious flick.

News flash: Burt Lancaster is not in I am Legend.
Neither is Lucille Ball.

And for that matter
I am not in I am legend.

Just seemed like a strange title.

Well two stories in my years that I felt captured my imagination best were I Am Legend by Richard Matheson (1954) and Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice (1973). Both involved in my imagination before reading them a lone individual taking on hordes of vampires. An overwhelming scenario to be sure and I imagined that they would chance to overcome through luck and cleverness. In I Am Legend we have Neville and in Interview With The Vampire we had the vampire Louis. Of course neither story upon reading worked out the way I'd imagined and yet they each satisfied in their own way. I Am Legend spawned The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price (1964) and The Omega Man with Charlton Heston (1971). The Omega Man seemed to deal not with vampires, but with some strange anti-science pseudo-zombie cult, but both were good in their own ways. Chronicles of the Vampire spawned a film in 1994 starring Brad Pitt as Louis and a sequel Queen of the Damned in 2002 based on The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned. I for one worry that signing Will Smith in this role is a move to make a less than serious film into something you can market for a possible larger box office than it deserves like when they released Queen of the Damned to the theaters after Aaliyah died. It had been meant as a direct to video release before then.
