Joker's Bodybags, JLA's Home Search & MPAA Madness

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, April 18, 2008

Welcome to another edition of Top Maniacal Rumors of the Week, the place where we break down those wild and zany rumors that sometimes fall between the cracks of the world wide interweb. In this installment, we have rumors ranging from possible major spoilers to why the MPAA considers “Demons” to be worthy of their R-rating stamps.

Joker Scenes Cut from the Dark Knight?

Rumor: (Spoiler Warning) After early screenings made their rounds based on Warner Bros.’ upcoming The Dark Knight, there have been rumors of a certain body bag scene getting cut from the film after audiences reacted badly, due to Heath Ledger’s demise.

Mania Verdict: FALSE—The scene is not getting cut out of the film, say numerous sources within the project. According to Clint Morris at Moviehole, there will be “no cut.”

Greenlight for Young Teen-led X-Men Spin-off?

Rumor: There have been whispers of a possible teenager-led X-Men spin-off and screenwriter Zak Penn refreshed them this week by talking about his attachment to the project.

Source: Comic Mix

Mania Verdict: TRUE—It’s doubtful we’re getting the old X-Men franchise back anytime soon with Wolverine branching off into its own franchise and a possible Magneto film also in the works. Fox will happily fill that gap by going in a different direction for its Marvel franchise.

Justice League Moving to Canada?

A snapshot of the Justice League.

Rumor: There has been much speculation over where exactly the upcoming Justice League Mortal film is being shot. The latest report has the location in Canada.

Source: News.com.au

Mania Verdict: MAYBE–We find it more likely that director George Miller will just move production to New Zealand, where the costumes are being created by Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop. Still, we can picture some scenes in the land up north.

A Sequel for The Sword and the Sorcerer?

Rumor: New reports indicate that a long awaited sequel to the fantasy animation The Sword and the Sorcerer could be on the horizon with the reuniting of director Albert Pyun and Lee Horsley.

Source: Twitch Film

Mania Verdict: TRUE—The film will be called Tales of an Ancient Empire. Director Pyun describes the sequel this way:

“It’s got a sexy sorceress, hordes of demonic vampires, a giant serpent, sea pirates, nasty sword (and axe, spear, leg of cow) fights and gore and nudity galore. Everything that a rousing adventure needs to have.”

Keanu Reeves Open to Constantine Sequel After All?

Rumor: Contrary to previous reports in this humble rumor column, the actor said in a recent interview that he liked the original and is bummed that no sequel is planned. He also attributed the film’s less than desirable box office results to a questionable rating from the MPAA, which considers trolls and dwarves to be fake but demons real.

Source: Moviehole

Mania Verdict: TRUE—We can see a Constantine 2 getting geared up just as we said in the previous column. There’s a lot of source material from the Hellblazer series and it’s doubtful a sequel would be held up because of how the MPAA judged the first film.

all good news it seems? with the only exception being another x-men flick by zak penn, unless he writes it more like a comic in the established continuity. which has always been my beef with the x-men movies if they had been based in the established continuity i probably wouldn't have much, if any to bitch about.

by the way the site is taking to take shape, although i would have preferred it shutdown for 1-3 days and came back full force. my only complaint at this point is the shitty scrolling links at the top of the page and the lack of comment # listings with everything but all things in due time right?

Yeah, pretty much all good news. Still not up for their version of JLA, but its getting made so I may as well accept it and move on. Besides, now with this horrible news of a "Teen" X-men movie, I have something more important to hate on. This, to me is awful news especially since Zak Penn is going to write it. He`s not a bad writer, at all, but his last foray into the X-men sucked major balls. If he does something closer to the comic books , like say something along The New Mutants, that would be damn cool. I just hope that they don`t go the X-men evolution route and have them all as teens. I didn`t like it, in the cartoon version and I definitely won`t like it on the movie screen.
I really do hope that they do another Constantine movie, with Keanu. There is so much more story there. Bring back Papa Midnite. Jimoun Hounsou isn`t doing much right now. Never Back Down was horrible.
I also couldn`t see Nolan cutting out that scene. I don`t know what it entails but if it has Heath in it and death, they`d pretty much have to cut out almost every scene he is in as the Joker. He`s a homicidal maniac, and death is what he does.

RE: Rumor: "New reports indicate that a long awaited sequel to the fantasy animation The Sword and the Sorcerer could be on the horizon" I'm pretty sure this wasn't an animation, but a live action film with Lee Horsely as the hero and Richard Moll as the creepy as fuck sorceror. Cheesy, but fun. Also, are line breaks too much to ask for?

I have heard this roumor several times over the past couple of weeks. Every time they say that it is fake. If I am not mistaken, the first place I hear this one was on Mania.com also. Other than the Film that he was working on when he died, this TDK will be the film role that true fans will be talking about for years to come. No mountains, no broken backs, just a good old fasion psychotic sociopath. Kill, Kill, blood makes the grass grow. Bang, Bang, your dead.

Heads up, looks like photos of the cast of G.I. Joe have made their way online to a celebrity gossip site...

UPDATE: Just an idea - Mania, you guys should create a section of the site where people can post links to stories, a la, Digg.com... So if you miss a story like these Joe pics, you would still get the content if we could post a link that would allow comments. Again, see Digg.com.

Stopped reading The Dark Knight bit at Spoiler but did glance down at the “False” verdict. Here’s hoping. Cutting ANYTHING from Ledger’s performance BECAUSE of his death would be a downright dirty shame. I think Nolan and everyone involved on the creative side of this would absolutely have to be against it. Here’s hoping the studio folk have some sense and balls.****
New Mutants maybe? That would be sweet to me provided it’s not a horror show like X3 was. That friggin’ movie ought to have a class action law suit against it. Blues Brothers 2000 was a better film. Zak Penned (oh I KILL me) X2, which was the best so far and gives me hope, but also X3, where all hope was abandoned. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more info. Wolverine seems to be shaping up as something good. It needs to be hella good to make me forget and forgive The Last Stand. If they pull that off I’ll be much more interested in a “Young X-Men” movie. New Mutants!!!****
I’m less concerned about where Justice League is being filmed and more concerned with how. So far still very leery of this whole project. Here’s hopin’.****
Sorry. What’s the Sword and the Sorcerer? I should check it out?****
Very nice news from Keanu. Wish it was more an announcement that a sequel was getting under way but it’s good to know he isn’t walking away from the possibility. Speaking of Hellblazer, anyone been keeping up with Andy Diggle’s run? It’s been better than it’s been in years!****
Everyone like my improvised paragraph breaks?

See, I was afraid of this. All the GIJOE's have the same damn black suit. I know that makes it more realistic, but I don`t like it. Scarlett looks good. Marlon Wayans still looks like a crackhead with a gun. Channing Tatum doesn`t look much better. They all pretty much look the same except for their heads. And Quaid as General Hawk only looks cool without the jacket. Storm Shadow actually looks kind of badass in that all white suit, but I hope he has the ninja suit too. Baroness looks like a bad version of Kate Beckinsale in Underworld. No idea who that other chick is but she looks like she`s posing for an Ambercrombie & Fitch catalogue. Snake Eyes is by far the coolest looking JOE. Honestly, who the hell decided to cast Marlon Wayans? He can barely hold that gun up, much less shoot it. I`m slightly disappointed.

Well that's an odd double post.
Anywho - At least we know for sure The Baroness will not be blonde!
