One thing is for sure. Director Jon Favreau has absolutely no issues talking about his future films even if they're high profile tent pole releases. While promoting the upcoming September 30 DVD release of Iron Man, Favreau opened up and confirmed earlier reports at a promotional press conference. SHH's Scott Huver was on hand and passed along what we can expect from Iron Man 2 and a third installment. If you don't want to know anything that could be considered spoilers, click out of this article.

Here's some highlights.

--Iron Man's classic comic book nemesis the Mandarin, the Asian crimelord who sports ten powerful ring weapons (alluded to in the first film through references to the terrorist cell the Ten Rings) will most likely emerge as a primary antagonist, although Favreau is still wrestling with how to address the villain's mystical origins and fit them into the high-tech world established in the debut film. It's also possible the Mandarin may not be fully revealed as the "Big Bad" until a possible third film to avoiding overexposing a potentially intriguing enemy .

--The most well-known storylines from the comic book series – "Demon in a Bottle," in which Stark becomes an alcoholic, and Rhodey taking over the role and armor of Iron Man during Stark's recovery – are expected to be included, possibly both in the second sequel. Rhodey's role in the first film was not as expansive as originally intended, and Favreau expects to rectify that.

--Favreau is also having designs developed for Rhodey's "War Machine" armor, and even more upgraded and tricked-out versions of Stark's suit may be utilized.

--Favreau plans to follow the first film's themes of integrating social and political themes into the adventure and fantasy, and he hinted at a current global situation providing some inspiration – possibly an allusion to plans to utilize Iron Man's Russian counterpart, the Crimson Dynamo.

Jon Favreau and newcoming writer Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) are set to begin fleshing out the script with production likely starting early 2009. Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jon Favreau will reprise the roles with Favreau once again behind the camera.

Iron Man 2 will hit theaters April 30, 2010.

I really do like the way Jon Favreau is handling Iron Man. This is what good directors do. He and Nolan take great care to make sure these movies not only make dough but are actually highly quality films that the fanboys as well as the mainstream audience enjoy.
Crimson Dynamo would be cool and Demon in a bottle is a great storyline as long as it doesn't take the whole 2 movies. I would actually really like to see something in regards to Armor Wars. The fact that people were stealing his weapons/technology was a big part of the first flick. Favreau could really run with that in the second or third film. Something like that could push him to drink more. Rhodey can then take over duties and run into trouble forcing Tony to put down the liquor and create a new suit. War Machine.

This is great. I can't wait for another one.
In risk of sounding like I don't "belong"---I have a question.

Is there like a compelation or one book with a collection of the "Demon in A Bottle" or other storylines that are mentioned or are they just kind of scattered about?

When I was younger I wasn't too big of a comic book reader for this very reason, I couldn't get one every week and keep up with storylines.

Sorry Maniacs, now I'll go sit in the corner...

Needaname - In Amazon.com you buy a hardcover version of Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle for like $17. If not you can try to find it through a torrent site. That's what I did for some Green Lantern stories Wiseguy told me about.

Are they gonna rework Downey's contract? He signed for 3 but that included The Avengers.

I don't mind War Machine stuff, but this is Iron man, just spin the movie off for him no reason to take up valuable space for Tony storylines.

I just hope the drunk Tony stuff is condensed and does not take up too much time either. Really a storyline like that is better for tv drama stuff. Kids don't want to see that crap really. Drinking is bad mmmmmmkkk? but putting it in as a main story plot point is really bad.

The balance of story and CGI was perfect for movie. I have a feeling it's going to tip for the next ones to CGI anyway.

Now if only we could get a director who feels/understands SUPERMAN. Mark M. may be the man for the job... BUT he may be too over the top. As mentioned before Jon and Chris love Irony and Bats. That needs to be a rule if you start a franchise. LOVE IT.

Tony Stark = Douchebag

Keep it up, Johnny Fav's!

Douchebag and possible Skrull?

Im with ya Dazzler... Screw War Machine. This should all be about Tony and Iron Man and His Villians. War Machine / Rodney has a role with Tony and his issues but if they want to do something with War Machine bring him in at the end of the 3rd movie. They can do a spin off with Terrance Howard for his own movie.

Downey is the perfect Tony Stark so I would like to see more of him and the orange and red suit kicking azz.

Just because the introduce War Machine, it doesn`t have to be Rhodes in it at first. Stark didn`t build War Machine specifically for Rhodey. He built it as a more aggressive battle suit to fight more powerful enemies. Stark can build it, use it, and then towards the end of the 2nd or even 3rd flick, Rhodey can use it.

Favreau is the man! Great interview

I hope they keep Demon for part 3. Seems like a bit much to shove into the second one. Show the drinking starting to get out of control in 2 and maybe a little in Avengers then 3 should be all about drunk as a skunk Stark and Rhodey covering his ass and Stark cleaning up and building War Machine for his comeback and then passing that armor of to Rhodey at the end. Demon needs to be a major arc in the flick and not something introduced and resolved in the last 1/3 of a film

Really looking forward to this next one whatever it ends up being though!
