Jon Favreau, the director of the upcoming film IRON MAN, responded to Cinescape's reports that Tom Cruise may not be out of the running for the role of Iron Man.

"I've never even met Tom Cruise, though I do think he is a great actor," said Favreau. "He doesn't seem to fit with what Marvel is looking for at this time, but you never know what will happen. The rumor is false as far as I know."

The rumor was reported shortly after the Comic Con when a scooper wrote in saying that she overheard a few Paramount execs saying, "I believe Tom Cruise has got it in the bag, yeah."

Favreau quipped, "If by "in the bag" they mean drunk, I think they're referring to Mr. Gibson in Malibu."

IRON MAN will follow troubled billionaire Tony Stark as he creates a life support suit to assist him after a life threatening accident, he ultimately decides to use its technology to fight evil and crime. The film will release on May 2, 2008.

A release date and no star yet. Guess the acting and material is taking second place here. Mr Favreau please hire someone who is better at acting than making tabloid headlines and this film will be welcomed. No Tom Cruise...or Mel Gibson...or Lindsey Lohan...

Yeah, I can agree with this statement hudd357mag. Maybe Tom Cruise shouldn't get this part. We need someone who can embody this character. Few can pull this off in comic book adaptations. I just hope they pull it off with this one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Tom Selleck!!!!! (Or somebody that looks a lot like him).

browbeat, I respect your opinion but I really don't think so. I admint that while owning every published issue of IM and a fair chunk of original Tales of Suspense my opinion may be strongly influenced by my fandom but Tom Selleck never crossed my mind. If the actor was in his early 30s I'd have an easier time accepting it. As for Cruise there was a time a couple of years ago I could be talked into it but these days there is no way. Favreau please find a talent along the lines you have been describing. I can only imagine that hiring a film icon to play TS would ruin the film.

Hang on hudd... Lindsey Lohan as Iron Man? That would be awesome!

Why not Clive Owen? He isn't the most dashing man in Hollywood but i think we would be able to pull off Iron Man in spades. Or maybe even Hugh Jackman. But then again, an unknown or relatively unknown actor may be a better choice. Who knows. I just don't want to see Tom Cruise ruin a classic character with his 'interpretation' of pain and suffering due to a piece of shrapnel inching towards his heart. God I would love to see 1602 made into a film instead.

What about Matthew McConaughey as Iron Man?
He may not have the look but he could pull it off.

why does Iron Man need to be a typical Hollyweird Hearthrob? Why not a guy like DJ Squalls or Norman Redius. I just cant believe only good looking people have problems and get turned into Superheros. I would rather see Blankman 2 than Fantastic 4 2

I think Favreau is going to get an unknown if he can. If he gets some a or b lister than he`ll have to do it quick, because they aren't going to want to do it, if after an exhaustive search for an unknown, he then turns around looking for one of them.

I'm still with browbeat. There is no real reason that Selleck can't pull this off. As for Cruise, I can assure you I will never watch this movie if he gets the role. I'm done watching any movie, no mater how good, with him in it. He always was a spoiled ass before. But now he's just this big nut job.
