The fate of the Expanded Universe has been in question since the announcement of Episode VII. Lucasfilm has released this new video interviewing the creators who were directly responsible for shaping that Universe. The video also reveals that there will an alinement of all the Expanded Universe content.
Press Release: In this special look at the Star Wars Expanded Universe, many of Lucasfilm's brightest talents and authors discuss the legacy and exciting future of the company's comics, books, and video games.

When George Lucas created Star Wars, he depicted it as a lived-in universe with a history. That's where the creation of the Expanded Universe, or EU, comes in. "The movies are so rich and so full of detail," says Howard Roffman, EVP, Lucasfilm Franchise Management, "and you know that there's a ton of things that aren't revealed in the movies but obviously exist in the lore of Star Wars and in the story of Star Wars. The EU has been our attempt to take you into areas that aren't explored in the movies and give you much more depth." Kilian Plunkett, art director of Star Wars Rebels, names Brian Daley's classic novel, Han Solo and the Lost Legacy, as his introduction to the EU, while Lucas Books senior editor Jennifer Heddle cites Splinter of the Mind's Eye as her first EU experience -- a tale featuring Princess Leia dueling Darth Vader. The EU took a new direction with the 1991 landmark release of Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire, which takes place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and set the stage for the modern era of connected Star Wars stories. It led to comics like Dark Empire -- a favorite of Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni -- and videogames like Knights of the Republic, all informing each other. Many concepts that would be used in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, such as the Nightsisters, came from the EU.

Now, with Lucasfilm's Story Group, the EU will be unified like never before. Across the new films, TV animation, comics, novels, and games, the Star Wars narrative will be entirely consistent and cohesive. "I think the idea of aligning the content," says Kiri Hart, head of development, "is actually a really fantastic and exciting opportunity that no other fictional universe could really even support."

The EU remains an important resource for a galaxy far, far away. "There's a bright future for Star Wars," says Filoni. "But I think the EU will be a legacy that's mined forever."

So...I just read the article and watched the video...and....does this mean Episode 7-9 and spinoffs will "align" the EU with the movies or scrap them entirely, including characters like Mara Jade, the Solo twins, and the Yuutzahn Vong and start anew with this 'alignment' spin?  I am still not clear on this point.  Anybody care to explain?

Basicallly Disney said everything in EU is considered myth and never really happened. They are saying they are not obligated to acknowledge, abide by or adhere to it. In other words Disney told all the SW  EU  fans. Go FUCK YOURSELF  AND  YOUR  EU  UNIVERSE. Oh hey Disney, that is why I am going to Universal this year instead of there.

They're 'rebooting" the EU.  Because you know their will be new lines of tie-ins, stories and filler to explain what happened in the years between episodes 6 and 7.  It's been thirty years.

They can do the clean slate thing.  They'll get more money from it.  Fuck the EU, they're starting a new EU.  They'll make a fortune.  Maybe not from the old fanboys.  Maybe from the new fanboys.

Why would they make new movies based on books? It should be new stories where no one knows what will happen...DUH!! Can't believe how worked up some are getting. Stupid asses.

I loved the EU but I'm not ass hurt like some of these dolts. The original EU becomes legend and now all the new Star Wars EU along with the movies will be canon. So they can bring back some of legend EU and bring it into the new EU and movies. Kinda like how comics do a reboot.

Okay, boys, chill out, dudes!  Fans are getting worked up because they've spent thousands of dollars and hours for the past 30 years reading EU books , comics, and merchandise all on the marketing by Lucasfilm that the EU was the definitive canon, based on GL's long stated assertion that Episodes 7-9 would never be made!  Yes, there was the INITIAL fine print moniker that came out with the original Heir to the Empire press release, that any movie 'possibly made' would trump the EU, but the fact that GL kept repeating to us (in SEVERAL interviews) that there will be NEVER be a 7-9 was a bit of a schmoz...

I, for one, AM on of these fans but I WILL be supporting the new EU as much as I did the old EU, though admitedly after I'm done the nine book Legacy of the Force series (four more books to go - I started BEFORE Eps 7-9 were announced), I won't bother with the old Legends EU, which include the 10 post-Legacy books currently out there, which will all get thrown out the window...

I don't think these fans are necessarily "butt hurt," nor are they "stupid asses" (well, okay, maybe some are...).  The majority are just fans who were kind of duped for the past 30 years.   Whatever, I, for one, am over it...

I  read the expanded universe as of seeing in between the movies. I have a post on a television series to show what really happens in between the original trilogy and classic trilogy. Maybe Sly Moore and Sate Pestage are killed in the X-Wing mini series. There could be Feris Olin on Star Wars Underworld kill Mas Amedda. They could have interquel movies like the Thrawn Trilogy as CGI  direct to video. They could have an X-Wing mini series. Also Yoda and Exar Kun as forces ghosts could in a dark forces/jedi academy mini series face each other just as the spirit of Exar Kun is defeated by the spirit of Yoda as a new villain for the sequel trilogy is the sith apprentice to Exar Kun. Marvel Comics is getting back the legal rights to Star Wars starting in 2015. Maybe Marvel Comics could have stories in between movies of the sequel trilogy. As of the Vector saga they should not scrap the Legacy comics as the only post Return of the Jedi. Vergere could get killed off in a television series.

RANDOM THOUGHT - I wonder how many die hard fans of the EU are also die hard fans of DC they freak out this much every time DC changes the universe?

I realize that the EU produced some great stories, but I'm a hell of a lot more excited about new Lawrence Kasdan Star Wars making to the big screen after all these years.

SarcasticCaveman 4/26/2014 6:24:08 PM

*making it to the big screen...

Damn it, I hate it when I accidentally leave a word out.

VindicatedMalgus 4/26/2014 6:48:30 PM

I liken the the EU to the bible...great are boring to read....and its fiction
