July 1 July 7: The Beauty of Syndication

Date: Monday, July 01, 2002

So, you know what show I'm just all about these days?

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET.

Man oh man, it is such a good show. I've been watching the reruns on Court TV it airs at 1 a.m. weeknights, but that's a little late for me so actually I TiVo all the episodes.

You see, I didn't get to watch many episodes when the show originally ran from 1993 to 1999. First of all, that Friday night timeslot wasn't so great for a social butterfly like myself (i.e. I was at the movies).

Second, those were my college years. I missed a lot of TV watching due to working the nightshift to put myself through school and, of course, studying (i.e. drinking).

I decided to start checking out the reruns after FX's THE SHIELD started up a couple of months ago. I had been reading about how THE SHIELD is as good as HOMICIDE and, being the go-getter TV writer I am, I decided to judge for myself. As it stands now, I still prefer HOMICIDE, although THE SHIELD is totally f-ing awesome.

Of course, my preference might have something to do with my major crush on Det. Bayliss (Kyle Secor). I can only dream of being locked up in the interrogation room with him. Hee hee.

Yeah, so anyway, my point is discovering an old show for the first time is the true beauty of syndication.

I mean, did you know there are actually people out there who didn't watch THE SIMPSONS until it was moved into syndication? It's true. I swear.

One of my good friends didn't start watching BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER until FX starting airing it. Now she's horribly addicted and watches the new episodes too.

Is there a show that you didn't watch in its original run, but then discovered it in syndication? I mean other than THE BRADY BUNCH, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND and crap like that. Give me something surprising. E-mail it to me at RedSonia@cinescape.com.

Now, let me break down the week for you. Oh, and as always, check your local listings.

Monday, JuLY 1

You won't want to miss James Lipton saying, "Yo man, that's dope" when Will Smith stops by INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO (Bravo, 8 p.m.).

Check out tonight's all-new WITCHBLADE (TNT, 9 p.m.).

Johnny Depp as real life cocaine guru George Jung in BLOW

Michael Rapaport, Daryl Hannah, Andy Dick and Marilyn Manson stuff their faces with host Jon Favreau in DINNER FOR FIVE (IFC, 8 p.m.). One of these things is not like the other... I mean, what the heck is Andy Dick doing there?

STARZ has got BLOW (or as a friend calls it, "How to Screw Up Your Life 101") at 8 p.m.

You never saw WATERWORLD (USA, 8 p.m.)? Lucky.

TUESDAY, july 2

Remember in last week's Remote Patrol column when I went on and on about the musical episode of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (UPN, 8 p.m.) called "Once More With Feeling"? Well, it's on tonight. Oh man, I just got that song "Walk Through the Fire" out of my head. Oh well.

We get a little background into Lex in tonight's rerun of SMALLVILLE (WB, 9 p.m.). Unfortunately, it is never revealed how is it that Lex became one of those lucky guys who looks sexy even when bald.

I guess it's true what they say - you really can't go home again, but you can shop there. Check out GROSSE POINT BLANK on FX at 8 p.m.

The Cartoon Network has got IRON GIANT at 8:45 p.m.

Grace Jones alert! TBS has got A VIEW TO A KILL at 7:30 p.m. Damn! Now I've got that stupid Duran Duran song stuck in my head.

See how it all began: USA has got STARGATE at 9 p.m. Sorry, Richard Dean Anderson was not in the original movie.

WeDNESDAY, july 3

Archer invites a group of alien stargazers to witness a stellar event aboard Enterprise, not realizing the Suliban agent Silik is among the guests in this repeat of ENTERPRISE (UPN, 8 p.m.). Oh that wacky Archer.

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET

The Legion of Nerds begins their secret harassment campaign against Buffy in this repeat of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (UPN, 9 p.m.) on a special night and time. When I've had a really bad day, sometimes I wonder if a Legion of Nerds has launched a secret harassment campaign against me. But then I remember that I had a restraining order filed against the Legion of Nerds to prevent such things so it's probably highly unlikely.

Oh dear God! It's SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE on TNN at 9 p.m. You've been warned.

But I'm a dancer. Check out SHOWGIRLS on VH1 at 8 p.m. I'm sure it is nice and edited, removing all the "nasty" (i.e. good) parts of this bad, bad, bad movie.

Kick ass! Comedy Central has got SOUTH PARK at 10 p.m.

THURSDAY, juLY 4

If being all patriotic and watching fireworks isn't your thing, then you can check out BEYOND BELIEF: FACT OR FICTION, (Fox, 8 p.m.). But remember, if you don't watch fireworks then the terrorists have won.

The body of a woman is found in a garbage dumpster in this rerun of CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (CBS, 9 p.m.). Hey, I warned Fox to take BACHELORETTES IN ALASKA off the air or someone was going to get hurt.

Cornoholio Alert! Is there a better way to celebrate the greatness of this country then by watching BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD DO AMERICA (MTV, 7 p.m.)? Because if there is I haven't found it.

No time for love, Dr. Jones. AMC has got INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM at 7:05 p.m. That's 7:05 p.m. exactly.

Oh, and the Sci Fi Channel has got a 37-episode TWILIGHT ZONE marathon.

FRIDAY, july 5

I will always love PRIMAL FEAR (Cinemax, 7 p.m.) because it introduced me to my true love Edward Norton.

Hmmm, I hear a strange noise outside. I better investigate. Oh, it's just JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY (TMC, 9 p.m.).

PROFILES (Bravo, 9 p.m.) kicks ass tonight and gives us the scoop on Jackie Chan.

Check out ODYSSEY 5 on

SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE

Showtime at 10 p.m.

Markus sees his position as leader of Thunder Mountain challenged by brothers who fear the introduction of outside leaders into the compound in tonight's JEREMIAH (Showtime, 10:45 p.m.). Ummm, wasn't that the plot of GREASE? Oh wait, that was Thunder Road. My bad.

And, the TWILIGHT ZONE marathon on the Sci Fi Channel continues.

SATURDAY, july 6

ABC has got OCTOPUSSY at 8 p.m. You know, I had OCTOPUSSY once in college, but I took some penicillin for it and it cleared right up. Whew.

Pizza the Hut Alert! TBS has got SPACEBALLS at 9 p.m. You know, I had a boyfriend in college who got SPACEBALLS, but he took some penicillin and it cleared right up. By the way, he wasn't the same guy who gave me OCTOPUSSY in case you were wondering.

Get your 'toon on! The Cartoon Network has got THE POWERPUFF GIRLS followed by SAMURAI JACK, starting at 9 p.m.

It's rock'em, sock'em robots when Godzilla fights his robotic self in GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA on Sci Fi at 8 p.m.

Zed's dead, baby! Check out PULP FICTION on STARZ at 8:15 p.m.

SUNDAY, july 7

Amy's boyfriend Kif tries to impress her parents by going after those who rustled away their livestock on Mars in this repeat of FUTURAMA (Fox, 7 p.m.). Geez, what a good guy. My old boyfriends wouldn't even wear parents when meeting my parents.

A conman offers Peggy an at-home doctorate course, which she finances with the Hills' retirement fund in this repeat of KING OF THE HILL (Fox, 7:30 p.m.). Could be worse: she could've blown the money on cheap women and wine. That's what my mother did.

Fox is giving us a full hour of THE SIMPSONS starting at 8 p.m. Woo-hoo!

Tonight's ANGEL (WB, 9 p.m.) repeat is the one where Darla stakes herself to save her baby.

My cartoon doppelganger Daria returns to MTV for IS IT FALL YET? at 9:30 p.m.

Syd heads to Crete to locate some top-secret stealth technology in this repeat of ALIAS (ABC, 9 p.m.). Don't fret. I'm sure she wears a hot, sexy outfit in the process.

UPN has got a rerun of ENTERPRISE at 8 p.m. while the WB has got a rerun of CHARMED at 8 p.m.

Don't forget to check out an all-new THE DEAD ZONE at 8 p.m. on USA.
