July 15 July 21: Emmy Prognosticating
By: Sonia MansfieldDate: Monday, July 15, 2002
So, the Emmy nominations will be revealed this week.
I was going to write this big column, making predictions about what shows and performances will be recognized, but I decided to skip it.
I'm usually disappointed by the nominations (no shocking revelation there). The Emmy voters tend to nominate the same stuff every year EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, FRASIER, WILL & GRACE, THE PRACTICE, ER, NYPD BLUE. Yawn.
This year though it might get interesting.
You see, the last couple of years the Emmy have been a battle between THE SOPRANOS and THE WEST WING. But this year, THE SOPRANOS is ineligible for nominations because it didn't have any new episodes.
Now don't get me wrong - I love THE SOPRANOS. I can't wait for the new episodes. But I love that the Emmy field is a little more open this year.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 24, ALIAS, THE SHIELD, SIX FEET UNDER, and of course BUFFY in the drama category.
On the comedy side, I'd love to see a nod to UNDECLARED, or even THE TICK, but you and I both know that's not going to happen. That's why I'm rooting for newbies BERNIE MAC and SCRUBS.
And wouldn't it be fantastic to see THE SIMPSONS finally get the recognition in the Outstanding Comedy category (not just Outstanding Animated Program) that it deserves?
Who or what are you rooting for? E-mail it to me at RedSonia@cinescape.com.
Now, let me break down the week for you. Oh, and as always, check your local listings.

You don't want to miss host James Lipton singing the praises of BACHELOR PARTY when Tom Hanks stops by on INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO (Bravo, 8 p.m.). Not that there's anything wrong with BACHELOR PARTY, of course.
Sara falls in love but I'm pretty sure it ends badly in tonight's all-new WITCHBLADE (TNT, 9 p.m.).
REMEMBER THE TITANS (Encore, 8 p.m.)? Well, do you?

ABC has got THE PHANTOM at 8 p.m. It's not a very good movie, but it does have hunky Billy Zane in purple tights. Yummy.
Co-ed shower scene alert! FX has got STARSHIP TROOPERS at 8 p.m. Of course, said shower scene will probably be edited out. Hmmm. Maybe I should say "Denise Richards Alert!" Does that work for you guys?

Jeremiah uncovers secrets about his father at a place that Ezekial had warned him to avoid in this first season finale of JEREMIAH (Showtime, 10:45 p.m.). Hey, eventually we all uncover secrets about our fathers at a place someone warned us to avoid. Then you deal with it and move on.
SATURDAY, july 20
Hmmm. What to watch: SPECIES (NBC, 8 p.m.) or DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (ABC, 8 p.m.)? I'm going to take a pass on either, personally.

Get your 'toon on! The Cartoon Network has got THE POWERPUFF GIRLS followed by SAMURAI JACK, starting at 9 p.m.
