It looks like 'Justice League' may be filming in Canada, and not Australia, after all. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australia's Film Finance Corporation has refused the massive tax credits that lured the production there in the first place.
Director George Miller now estimates a 90% probability that the show will head to Vancouver.
"A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Australian film industry is being frittered away because of very lazy thinking," Miller said.
"If that's going to be the final decision, they're throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars of investment that the rest of the world is competing for and, much more significantly, highly skilled creative jobs."
However, many felt that the 'Justice League' production was merely an American film trying to take advantage of incentives that are meant for Australian filmmakers.
The director of the equity section of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, Simon Whipp told the Herald, "For the public, both in Australia and outside of Australia, it will be seen as an American film," he said. "I have tremendous respect for George and his work, which has been some of the most successful films that we have ever produced. But the studio I think in this instance is seeking to push the limits of the envelope."
Miller had previously stated that he believes having a string of major Hollywood movies, staffed largely by Australian workers, would help cultivate large-scale film production in Australia. He points to New Zealand's success at landing a long string of colossal productions as a sign of a healthy film industry there.
