Goodbye Maniacs (Article) - 2/15/2015 9:32:09 AM

End of an era.  I liked it here because of the people, my fellow Maniacs, and I'll miss you all.   I've had good times here for the last decade or more.  Lots of fun discussions.

Anybody who wants to friend me on Facebook, I'm Kara Stern.

Love at First Bite & Once Bitten Double Feature Blu-ray Review (Article) - 2/13/2015 6:49:17 AM

No need to be snotty about it.  We over 40 people like our genre movies just as much as you whippersnappers do.

I've got to say, while I enjoyed the first 3 spidey movies (yes, even 3 was enjoyable at the time) I haven't seen the last 2.  It was way too soon for a reboot and seeing the origin of Spiderman again didn't interest me.   Peter Parker is a young guy with superpowers who feels he his responsible for his uncle's death and therefore wants to help others.  I get that.  I don't need to see ANOTHER film about it.  If they want to do something new and interesting with the character I and my pocketbook will be waiting in line to see it but I'm not holding my breath.

I really liked Guardians of the Galaxy with it's fun Farscape vibe.  I liked the Thor movies which were about sibling rivalry more than punching bad guys.  I liked the snarky Iron Man.  I enjoyed The Avengers with it's mixing and matching characters with eachother.  Give us more films that feel new and fresh.  Leave mopey Spiderman, depressed because he can't play hero and pay the bills at the same time at home.

Doctor Who for Marvel's Jessica Jones (Article) - 1/31/2015 8:45:28 PM

The Purple Girl was an Alpha Flight character, memorable for me because her name is Kara.  I seem to recall she was accepted as a junior member of the team at one point.

First Look: Indominus Rex from Jurassic World (Article) - 1/30/2015 7:47:47 AM

They had velociraptors in a mall in the Primeval TV series.  Unfortunately, the mall was closed at the time but the dinos still managed to give the intrepid dino hunters a hard time.

Mania Box Office Report: American Sniper Scores 2 (Article) - 1/29/2015 6:34:24 PM

My mother wanted me to take her to see Twelve Years a Slave (back when it was in theaters).  I had no interest in seeing it as I feared it would be one of those films that would be all dramatic and important and relevant but unpleasant to watch.  But she wanted to see it so we went.

It was worse than I feared.  The acting was stellar but I was repulsed by the brutality and violence towards helpless people.  When I left the theater I didn't feel good or excited or uplifted.  I felt like I needed to take a shower.  I was embarassed to be standing there looking all white and caucasion, oozing evil out of the pores of my skin.

I don't much care for war films and I don't feel I need a lecture on how wonderful our troops are and how misunderstood they are when they come home with PTSD.   I appreciate our troops and am thankful that they are out there getting shot at for my benefit and all.  But I'll pass on American Sniper.

Mania Box Office Report: American Sniper Scores 2 (Article) - 1/29/2015 5:26:11 AM

I went to the movies this weekend and saw Black Hat.  It's bombing at the box office but I liked the film.  Lots of hot guys and action and things blowing up.  Maybe I'm shallow but when I go to the theater I like to have fun.  American Sniper doesn't sound like much fun so I think I'll skip that one.

My family went to see the Imitation Game on cheap ticket Tuesday.  That was an awesome film.  If Cumberbatch doesn't win Best Actor he was robbed.

Emma Watson for Beauty and the Beast (Article) - 1/29/2015 5:19:19 AM

Why are they remaking all their cartoons in live action?  Maleficient had something different to say about the story of Sleepint Beauty.  Will these remakes of Jungle Book, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast also have something new to say or are they just remakes?  If so I have little interest in them.

A Walk Among the Tombstones Blu-Ray Review (Article) - 1/23/2015 4:48:04 AM

Is an actor obligated to only make films in line with his views on reality?

Mania Review: Blackhat (Article) - 1/18/2015 5:45:30 AM

Rob's reviews are good because he handles language well.  His reviews of good movies make them sould really interesting and his reviews of bad films are cuttingly hysterical.

I'm planing to see this.  It looks like fun and there don't seem to be many fun movies around.

CASTLE: Castle, P.I. Review (Article) - 1/14/2015 7:37:31 AM

I disagree that this episode was so far below par.  The mystery seemed as interesting as most mysteries on procedurals seem.  A citizen is dead and Castle and crew have to follow clues to discover the murderer.

The comedy between Castle and Pearlmutter seemed a little over the top and forced but that was only a few scenes and in character as Pearlmutter has never liked Castle much.

I do think they are getting a little desperate to keep the relationship between Castle and Kate fresh.  They danced around the will they/won't they for years and now they are married.  They've barely explored their relationship as a married couple and how that would affect their crimesolving before throwing monkeywrenches at them.  This PI thing won't last because Castle and the crew at the 12th are too effective a team.

It wasn't their best episode but it wasn't so terrible either.  I still look forward to Castle every week.
