Independence Day Sequel Update

From Roland Emmerich

Have you ever wondered what happened after the events of Independence Day? It has been 17 years since the 1996 Blockbuster and now writer/ director Roland Emmerich is spilling the beans on what would happen for an Independence Day 2 and 3. Emmerich sat down with Entertainment Weekly (read it here) and revealed how the world has changed almost 20 years later for our heroes. Here is the story on ID Forever Part 1 and ID Forever Part II.

”The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back,” states the director, who finished two scripts with Independence Day co-writer Dean Devlin. Currently White House Down writer-producer James Vanderbilt is going over them with a rewrite. ”And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

Yet one has to wonder what would the world look like after all that alien tech was analyzed and scavenged?

“It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane”.

Bill Pullman has already confirmed his involvement where Will Smith has not.

So Maniacs, are you ready for ID Forever Part 1 and ID Forever Part II? Or would it be best to leave it int he summer of 1996?

For everybody's sake, leave it in 1996, especially if they're talking about 2 sequels back to back...back to back sequels haven't had a great track record with me, except for Back to the Future 2 and 3...those were what, 1989 and 1990?...seriously, The Matrix sequels, the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean movies?...horrible.  Leave it the hell alone.  At least the first one has nostalgic value.

Leave it in 1996.

As much as I'm down for watching the parts that I liked when its on TV every other week, I can't see this Franchise having any legs going forward.

Why, Why, Why ??????

I thoroughly enjoyed the original back then.

Don't see the need for a sequel but the studio does and actually the ideas Emmerich has put forth sound like what I have thought about myself. I've never liked sequels that act like nothing that occurred in the first ever happened (see every single Die Hard sequel). The idea that the alien tech would be incorporated into the world makes perfect sense (it was literally scattered everywhere) as well as humanity united in expectation of them returning.

I have to grudgingly say I would want to see this.

This would be really good news if it were not for Roland Emmerich.  Back whent he original came out I was hungry for anything scifi, so this movie was given a pass on a lot of things, however now with new Star Wars, new Star Trek, and so many more options, Emmerich's crap won't  pass muster.   Someone who could take this in a darker, cooler direction could do well with it.  They also can pass on having Smith and the rest of them returning, I'm not attached to any of those characters, unless its Randy Quaid's crazy twin brother.

I'd like to see this.  I've been wanting a sequel since I walked out of the theater after the first one, and I say better late than never.  Even if it turns out to be a steaming turd I still wanna see what they do with it just out of pure curiosity.  Just gimme something and I'll decide whether I like it or not.

I still dont get what's wrong with making a sequel to this. It makes perfect sense to me. It's not like it's a reboot of a classic or something. It's a sequel to a blockbuster movie. Im totally in!!

Id see it. Loved the orignal

Here's some ideas I had for other American holidays that the aliens could conveniently show up on...

THANKSGIVING - Will Smith catchphrase - "Let's BASTE these turkeys!"

COLUMBUS DAY - Will Smith catchphrase - "Welcome to da NEW world!"

ARBOR DAY - Will Smith catchphrase - "Kickin' yo alien butts gives me WOOD!"

I'd be down with a sequel to ID4. Bill Pullman and Jiff Goldblum are the only cast members I would care to see return. Will Smith with his typical Diva BS would want the whole movie to revolve around him and would hold up production until it did like he did with MIB3.
