Mania Box Office Report: Conjuring Defeats the Minions

Ghosts Rule

By Robert T. Trate     July 22, 2013
Source: Box Office Mojo

With a whole mess of sequels and animated films out at the box office. A non sequel/ prequel ghost story with small budget took the box office. That’s right Maniacs, The Conjuring, something our own critic Chuck Francisco called “the best horror film of 2013 so far" (read the full review here)

Here is what Ray Suber of Box Office Mojo had to report: “The Conjuring's $41.5 million debut is a new record for an original R-rated horror movie ahead of last month's The Purge ($34.1 million). It's also the second-highest start ever for a supernatural horror movie ahead ofParanormal Activity 2 ($40.7 million). For distributor Warner Bros., it's also higher than Pacific Rim's opening last weekend, which is particularly noteworthy givenPacific Rim's price tag was nearly ten times as high as that of The Conjuring”.

Damn shame R.I.P.D. I'm there for The Wolverine this Sunday.

Wasn't this the opening weekend for Red 2? I expected better numbers.

Didn't see anything this weekend.

As I said on its review page, the failure of R.I.P.D. pretty much puts the nails in the coffin of Ryan Reynold getting a Deadpool movie done. I personally think he's a good actor, especially in roles with humor to them but a studio won't put substantial money down for a leading man who isn't doing well at the box office.

LOL! Hanso...you are right and always been. Reynolds = box office poison

hanso 7/22/2013 10:52:21 AM

Its gotten so bad for Reynolds people dont want to even hear him voicing toons.  Dude needs to go do TV for a bit or take some small supporting roles.

My wife wanted to see Pacific Rim...I have no idea why.  From the first preview of it, well, I couldn't get into it.

So we saw it last night and I absolutley hated it.  10 minutes in and I wanted to leave.  I almost cried at the thought of sitting through the rest of it.  It's been a long time since I've wanted to spew hate and murder at a  movie screen.  I sat through it for my wife.  It was her movie afterall.  It's not something I would have beieved would be her type of movie.  Maybe it's payback for her buying me Transformers one year for Christmas and me not opening it for a year and a half because I didn't want to watch it?  Hmmm.

Wanted to see Red 2 though.  She did too, but why Pacific Rimjob?  I don't know if I'll ever know.

DarkXid...that sounds like something most of the women I know would have said about Pacific Rim.  I'm thinking you and your wife may have your roles reversed...lol.  That movie is awesome.

Sanity that's a sweet ride in your avatar!

ObiWannaJones 7/22/2013 1:14:23 PM

I would have to disagree; DarthBob has a real SWEET RIDE in his avatar!

Isn't that the same hole that Batman had to crawl out of in TDKR?? Maybe not. You see one hole, you've seen 'em all..right?
