Del Toro talks "Hellboy 2" - Apr 10, 2007 - 01:06am
I felt the first Hellboy was average at best, C+ material.
I didn't like the film stylistically and I thought the story was rather bland. That said, del Toro is one of my favorite directors, and Pans was brilliant. Everything I have heard about this film seems an improvement over the first film, so I am looking forward to a trailer. If del Toro goes with a style similar to Pans, count me there opening weekend.
Weinstein's to split "Grindhouse"? - Apr 10, 2007 - 01:03am
Regardless what you think about his acting ability, I think we can all agree Kurt Russell is box office poison!
Grindhouse was a decent flick too, shame.
Mike Disa directing "Hoodwinked 2" - Apr 02, 2007 - 04:04am
Where did you read it at?
It was reported by Variety at 11pm EST on April 1st, which is about 2-3 hours before I reported it.
It was reported by ComingSoon on April 2nd, about an hour after I had reported it.
As far as I know it hasn't been reported yet by Hollywood Reporter or Joblo or various other large movie websites.
Where did you see it at days ago?
Sarah Michelle Gellar joins "The Dark Knight"? - Mar 30, 2007 - 12:55pm
Thanks Wes,
The whole situation is quite complicated I'm afraid! The truth is, I was told to do KJ's Take, and never wanted to do it in the first place. I actually don't like it myself, I prefer simple get the point across journalism.
On top of that, my whole KR rant was pretty much me projecting my anger with something else that was going on, onto poor Kurt Russell. I probably would have argued just about anything at that point in time, I wasn't in a very good mood.
I don't get angry often, and am a pretty laid back person, so I feel bad that I took it all out on poor Kurt Russell.
Sarah Michelle Gellar joins "The Dark Knight"? - Mar 30, 2007 - 12:27pm
Reese Witherspoon did a nude scene for a movie earlier in her career. It was just before Cruel Intentions.
As for scoops, this was from another site, and I try and report whatever I think you guys would be interested in, if it proves false, I'll post an update saying such. Better to report than not to, or so I think.
Kurt Russell talks about the remake of "Escape" - Mar 26, 2007 - 01:49pm
The Grindhouse role could be his saving grace, and might make my whole argument mute.
But I can't say anything about it till I see it.
As I said before, I love Vanilla Sky, but didn't like Kurt in it. His role was small and I didn't think he played it well. The role seemed miscast.
Miracle and Sky High are the list's only two successes critically and at the box office ... considering this is the man you guys love as Snake, I think it shows he is pretty much taking whatever he can get.
Miracle isn't a bad film, I consider it a solid B. Sky High isn't my type of film at all, so what's the point in rating it.
I think Grindhouse is going to put a big monkey wrench into my washed up argument, but if he wasn't in that, there is no question he would qualify. But I don't know about your TV Movie comment, he just Executive produced one, and it won't be long before that becomes his avenue.
Kurt Russell talks about the remake of "Escape" - Mar 26, 2007 - 01:32pm
Wait Lister, discarding Grindhouse, which I haven't seen and thus can't comment on it's quality, what exactly HAS KR done that makes you think he is NOT washed up?!
Miracle? Are you defending the man's recent track record based on the film Miracle?
Because I don't see anything else that leads me to believe he is anything BUT washed up.
Kurt Russell talks about the remake of "Escape" - Mar 26, 2007 - 01:17pm
Oh please,
You guys act like just because I haven't seen EFNY that I haven't seen a single older film. Get off it.
I've seen plenty of older films, hell I've seen Suspiria, a film I bet 95% of you haven't seen. I was a film major at one point and my opinion regarding films is just as valid as the next guy.
In this instance, my opinion is that I don't think Kurt Russell is that great of an actor. I'm sorry I got everyone's panties in a bunch. I forgot I was the only one unable to dislike an actor.
Apparently making campy (but shitty) genre movies makes you untouchable. Not to me. Maybe I grew up in a different time, who knows, but I have seen films like:
Used Cars - Awful, unfunny. I've never been a fan of dual rolled actors, and it didn't work here.
Tango and Cash - Bland, done before and unfunny.
Big Trouble In Little China - Cliche, Indiana Jones Wannabe
Overboard - Ugh. This movie makes my head hurt.
I could go on, but I don't want to. I've seen a lot of Russell's films, and I don't like them!
You call them campy and cult flicks, I call them like I see them, crap! They are mindless crap, there are a million films like them, and I see nothing that sets this crap apart from other crap.
Now before you all jump on me saying you just don't like older films, or campy films, that simply isn't true. But there is a difference between a good old campy film and a bad one.
Used Cars is awful, What About Bob is hilarious. I like my older films as much as the next guy, I just like them to be good, and in my opinion that means stay away from anything Kurt Russell did.
From his work, the only films that were any good:
Tombstone
Backdraft
Stargate
The Thing
Vanilla Sky
and I think Vanilla Sky was a great film DESPITE Kurt, not because of him.
"Lost: The Man From Tallahassee" - Mar 23, 2007 - 05:22am
Sure seemed like he was really there to me. Jacks dad was kind of the proverbial white rabbit, where Locke's dad seemed very much real, frightened, and confused.
The island loves Locke, he does what he's told.
What the hell were they thinking? - Mar 19, 2007 - 01:22am
Yeah but, gamera, if you're friends had the money and the ability to cut through all the red tape and get the kid earlier, they would.
I don't think Brad and Angelina are trivializing it at all, in fact, I think what they are doing is great. Each of these kids just hit the friggin lottery.
Spoilers for "Heroes" - Mar 13, 2007 - 11:49am
Well, Season n was initially supposed to be ending right now, but when they realized it was such a hit, they asked Tim Kring if he could add a few episodes onto this seasons order, and he agreed.
Rob Zombie shows off Michael Myers - Feb 26, 2007 - 02:38am
how?
awesome cinematography.
it's damn creepy.
he looks perfect.
I already love the feel/tone Zombie seems to be going for.
That's how!
"Lost: Stranger in a Strange Land" - Feb 23, 2007 - 05:05pm
I hate the Heroes promo's as well, though the one for this coming episode is bad ass.
No more crappy guy voice, seriously a bad ass promo.
As for avoiding promos, how in the hell are you supposed to do that? Shut your eyes whenever one pops on TV?
I'm going to go see if I can't find the latest Heroes promo on YouTube. If I can, I'll upload it to Mania's video section, so keep an eye out.
Edit: Couldn't find the one I saw ... it was a sweet promo though.
Marcia Gay Harden and Toby Jones join "The Mist" - Feb 22, 2007 - 08:45am
I don't think being a C list actress means that you aren't a GOOD actress, rather your just not a big name.
I think it would be a stretch to call her a B list actress, though I will concede C.
How to Land Yourself a Great Broad - Feb 20, 2007 - 07:42pm
While many of her suggestions may be superficial, they are also dead on correct.
News flash, we live in a superficial world.
Download movies to your PS3 - Feb 20, 2007 - 05:10pm
Me and the PS3 go way back, and all the experiences I've had with it are flat out awful.
I even camped out for that garbage for a whole weekend. it deserves my criticism as much as it deserves last place in this generations console war!
Me or my roomate have owned all 3 systems, so I feel I can comment on them all. Oh and it is too little to late, just like their sub-par online system which is far inferior to 360's and a blu-ray player which doesn't work!
They charge me, the consumer, an extra 200 big ones to add in a blu ray player and then when I buy it tell me not to play the discs but store them to my hard drive to watch it, otherwise it could break ...
Sony deserves what they get, they messed this generation over bad.
Robert K. Shaye says "The Hobbit" in 2009 - Feb 19, 2007 - 04:20am
I would have to argue that you simply missed the point and theme of the films. That or it just didn't resonate with you.
Weekend Box Office Report for February 16-18 - Feb 19, 2007 - 03:55am
Haven't you heard? We give everything a B ...
Oh, I should also add ... Me and Pat Ferrara (writer for Mania) went out to see Bridge to Terebithia last night with our respective girlfriends (no, not plastic), and both of them cried.
I found that amusing.
Robert K. Shaye says "The Hobbit" in 2009 - Feb 19, 2007 - 03:52am
"horrible LOTR movies"
I immediately stopped reading as it became clear that either A) you have no idea what your talking about or B) you are just flaming or C) we have horribly different tastes in movies.
Robert K. Shaye says "The Hobbit" in 2009 - Feb 19, 2007 - 03:07am
Someone else may have mentioned this, I know I heard it somewhere, but there is really only one person I would like to see direct The Hobbit asside from PJ:
Guillermo del Toro
And even then I wouldn't want it to be on a thrown together rushed script/production time table like this will be.
Kevin Smith to direct "Reaper" Pilot - Feb 17, 2007 - 01:16pm
I have seen a few episodes of Gilmore Girls, I blame my GF.
I never really got into Smallville or Angel, I only watched bits and pieces of Buffy.
Hasbro's 2007 Toys - Feb 12, 2007 - 12:48pm
Nope.
Back in HS I used to be big into comics and would dabel in action figures, but never got into them. I had no clue Star Wars Transformers were a huge seller. Still seems a little odd!
"Blockbuster Total Access" - Feb 09, 2007 - 03:15pm
Um ...
Where do the DVD's we review come from. Where do the games we review come from, etc etc.
Everything we review is for the most part given to us free. We are not obligated to give a positive review, and such is the case here.
I actually use their service and while I think the website could be improved, think the service is very good and it would come highly reccomended from me as well.
As to the stealing DVD's from paying customers ... we are paying customers.
Ben Barnes joins "Prince Caspian" - Feb 04, 2007 - 03:14pm
You are of course correct, but relatively speaking, it is small time compared to Narnia.
Shyamalan and "The Green Effect" Update - Feb 01, 2007 - 05:12am
Err ...
I think you things a bit mixed up there mla. The rewrites are concerning the film 'The Green Effect' not Airbender whose script hasn't even been started yet.
I would be devastated if an Airbender script needed rewrites! But it won't, M. Night will make it a masterpiece ... watch.
Like I said, it's going to be the best fantasy film we've seen since LOTR!!!
Dino de Laurentiis wans more Hannibal? - Feb 01, 2007 - 02:05am
I was tired, and apparently confused. Thanks for the heads up ... not sure why the hell I got that mixed up.
In any event, seeing as I really don't have anything to add, for one time only you get NO KJ's Take!
Enjoy it while it lasts!
"Heroes'" Sylar is Misunderstood? - Jan 30, 2007 - 01:51am
Linderman hasn't been shown as of yet, but he is kind of that all encompassing character. He interacts with everyone, he has a lot of power, etc etc.
Considering his affinity for the paintings of Issac, you have to assume that he knows about the Heroes, and considering there is some 'unknown' boss telling Claire's dad what to do, it wouldn't be surprising to find out it's him.
Linderman will probably play a bigger part in season 2.
Kate Bosworth joins "21" - Jan 25, 2007 - 08:54am
So there was a female student. I couldn't remember if there was or not.
Green Goblin image from "Spider-Man 3" - Jan 24, 2007 - 02:37am
You are, of course, correct exfan.
And I will gladly eat crow if this film turns out to be as good or better than the second film. I am crossing my fingers and hoping. That said, Osborn looked awful in the first film and Harry looks awful in that picture!
In Raimi we trust.
Kate Bosworth joings "After.Life" - Jan 14, 2007 - 02:33am
On helium eh? Heh. Sweet, I used to love sucking air from helium balloons as a kid.
M. Night Shyamalan to direct "Avatar: The Last Airbender" - Jan 09, 2007 - 08:57am
I really think it is something he has wanted to do, in a genre he has wanted to try for a while now.
Don't forget he was mentioned and was seriously considering directing the 5th Harry Potter.
Women of Sci Fi - Jan 09, 2007 - 08:55am
Yeah, I love the GR Martin series, one of my favorites.
Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to rewrite "The Tingler" - Jan 05, 2007 - 03:57pm
Someone clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning!
I really don't want to argue with you as I don't believe I am 'whining', nor do I think I am 'stamping my foot like a petulant child'. I really do believe I have every right to express my own opinion, even if I haven't seen the original, and I don't think that makes my opinion worthless.
You clearly dislike me and/or my opinion so how about you just stop reading when you hit 'KJ's Take' and we leave it at that.
Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to rewrite "The Tingler" - Jan 05, 2007 - 03:24pm
My opinion is just as valuable as the vast majority of people this movie will be marketed to who have also never seen the original film.
It seems to me you are just arguing to argue.
Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to rewrite "The Tingler" - Jan 05, 2007 - 02:14pm
Lister,
I wrote: "Never saw Feast, but the plot for this movie sounds just awful and it's not real surprising they need a rewrite. Melton and Dunstan will have an uphill climb to make this script anywhere near decent."
I think I made it pretty clear that I was commenting on Pace's script and it's plot sounding god awful, which it does. I mean, come on, a medical cure for fear that unleashes a beast which kills people with fear?? Yeah ....
The fact that I never saw Feast has no bearing, I clearly say that the new writers will have a hard time making a decent script out of a movie based on that kind of plot. I am going by the information given regarding the movie which was put out via press release from the studio. What more do you want? Am I required to have seen every movie that may be relevant in any given discussion before I am allowed to generate my own opinion on an upcoming film?
Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to rewrite "The Tingler" - Jan 05, 2007 - 11:54am
I should have added that I never saw the original Tingler film. All I know about it is the lame description that I found online, no other plot details or explanation was given.
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 05:33pm
Heh, no need to apologize for anything. If users have some kind of gripe, I want to hear about it. It just happens to be that in this case I don't think anything will change.
Regardless, I still want to hear a users opinions. I don't discard them just because I don't agree with them, rather file them away. I don't know what the future may bring, and maybe things will change once again.
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 05:15pm
I don't really understand then, because this site is clearly free. If you don't like the ads, turn them off. You are not required to pay us one cent and you can still view 100% of our content.
That is the definition of free.
I must have mis-understood you earlier as I thought you were complaining about the ads. And I don't think mania is really comparable to AICN.
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 05:13pm
MLA,
I was using joblo as an example showing that large sites with big userbases do it much moreso than us, so clearly it doesn't offend everyone as much as it does you.
Secondly, almost all of the writers on Mania are the same ones that were on Cinescape and I happen to think that the vast majority of them write great columns. I'm sorry you don't feel the same.
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 04:58pm
Oh and lister, which do you think the above movie is more likely to be like, the old movies De Niro starred in, or the more recent fare?
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 04:47pm
It's easier for me NOT to add my opinion, but I was asked to do so, and so I will.
That said, I really don't see anything wrong with it. As I said before, the news itself is reported via proper journalistic standards with no bias injected leaving the user to make their own opinion.
My opinion is clearly labeled as an opinion and not fact. Anyone who doesn't want to know my opinion can simply stop reading when they hit KJ's Take.
I think some of you are making this out to be far more than it really is. Go yell at a site like joblo.com, a much larger movie entertainment site where they weave opinion on each article directly into the news.
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 04:41pm
Well, Lister, if you do click through the ads, then you must find them somewhat useful, so why are you complaining about them?
If they annoy you I assume you don't click through them, in which case them showing or not showing on your browser will make no difference to mania's bottom line.
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 04:18pm
I don't do it myself, and I'm sure the people who run the site don't want you to do it, but ads tend to be pay per click, not pay per view. There are exceptions to that, but a vast majority of ads on the internet, and all Google ads, are pay per click.
Do you often click the ads? Probably not. So would you blocking the ads change the income of the site? Nope. The ads that aren't pay per click would still receive the same rate, because you are still coming to the site, and the pay per click ads would pay the same as you never clicked them to begin with!
In the end, YOU are the user. The plugin to block ads is not illegal or even frowned upon, so noone can stop you from installing it. Hell, if it will make your experience on the site better, than go for it!
Believe it or not, some people like the ads. They can sometimes serve as a reminder of things coming out, they can also be annoying, but someone's gotta pay to host this site! I just thank the heavens that the management of this site haven't gone to the extremes other sites have where word's in articles themselves become scroll over ads.
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 03:46pm
If you use Mozilla you can install a plugin that will auto-block all ads on each and every website you visit, thus making it free!
As for who asked me to inject my opinion, that would be my boss. Though it should be noted he never asked me to distort the news, nor was that his or my intention. If I ever spin news or unfairly report something, call me on it!
George Clooney joins "36" - Jan 04, 2007 - 01:51pm
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with me placing my personal opinion at the bottom of the article and think you all are making too big a deal about it.
It's nothing more than my own personal opinion on things, and reflects my own personal taste. I don't happen to enjoy De Niro's work and I expressed that as my own opinion.
I did not let that opinion impact the article, and the news was reported in an unbiased way. The opinion was offset from the news and clearly labeled as just that, an opinion.
You all are welcome to draw your own opinions from the news, and are encouraged to share them in the comments section. If you disagree with me, we can have some good conversation about it and generate some discussion and debate on the various topics.
I have been asked to divulge my opinion when reporting the news, but the journalist in me refuses to taint the news with it. I will continue to report the news in an unbiased way across the board as well as add my own opinion at the bottom.
If you don't care what I think, which is totally fine, then just skip over it.
If anyone has any other suggestions on how to improve the news, feel free to email me at karl@mania.com
Enjoy the New Year!
"Aqua Teen" to the Big Screen in March - Jan 03, 2007 - 02:14am
Well, I just wrote Blockbuster Total Access because they recently gave Mania a chance to review it ... the review should be up around the end of January/early February.
Hand-Eye Coordination - Dec 30, 2006 - 07:00pm
It's working on me. I've played the system and it's by far the biggest leap in gaming that I have ever experienced.
"Indiana Jones 4" confirmed for 2008 - Dec 29, 2006 - 08:33pm
theCOLLECTOR,
Yeah, my nickname is KJ. My dad and me share the same name, but different middle names, so my family calls me KJ to avoid the confusion.
As for the movie, I haven't really made up my mind as of yet.
"Silent Hill 2" on the way - Dec 27, 2006 - 03:07pm
Well ...
Snally was right, I should displace my own OPINION from the body of the article. I have an obligation to report the news in an unbiased way, but if I then offer my own opinion, and state it as just that ... my own opinion ... there is nothing wrong with that.
In the future I will simply do something like:
KJ's Take: Silent Hill is about as fun as stepping in dog crap!
"Silent Hill 2" on the way - Dec 27, 2006 - 11:43am
I will try and start setting my comments apart Snallygaster, thanks for the input.
But as for the movie, it was trash. I absolutely hated it. To each his own, that's just my take.
Weekend Box Office Report: Christmas at the Museum - Dec 25, 2006 - 10:19pm
The reason i wrote as i did about Apocalypto is because:
A) The Christmas box office tends to lead to very small week to week drops for films.
B) Apocalypto had a very solid opening
C) Apocalypto has since fallen off much harder than normal for a film of it's type.
Basically, the reason I said what I did is simply because Apocalypto has experienced unexpected harsh drops in the weeks following it's release. Normaly films with good WOM and reviews don't have that problem.
"Transformers" Trailer Online - Dec 21, 2006 - 09:58pm
If the film's release date wasn't so damn crowded this film could really take off. As is, it will have to really work to break 200.
If the film really does well review/WoM wise then a sequel could do huge numbers.
Final "Harry Potter" Book gets a title - Dec 21, 2006 - 09:55pm
Various locations were reporting it as Hollows earlier in the day, but the correct spelling is Hallows. It threw me for a while as well, the initial column spelled the title Hollows, but I changed it when it was confirmed the other way.
"Scar Night" Contest - Dec 17, 2006 - 12:15pm
That's how it always is, do you have a better idea?
Hiro's dad is ... Hiro's dad on "Heroes" - Nov 21, 2006 - 10:34pm
I must have read something wrong along the way, because I really thought he was his biological father. Sorry for the mix-up.
G.I. Joe, Gaiman, & a Random Rant - Nov 21, 2006 - 01:12am
"I couldnt take it. After the first few wisecracks from my classmates I tore off the front coverand cried when I did it."
I know Pat in real life, good friend, great guy and this comment had me laughing in fits.
Poor Pat.
B5 goes DTV - Nov 14, 2006 - 11:29am
It was announced months ago when Babylon 5 was first announced to be making DTV films, but this is another announcement, more formal and was just released by WB yesterday!
Nicolas Cage joins "The Sadhu" - Nov 14, 2006 - 11:26am
No relation, but good eye.
Sue used to work for Cinescape a while back.
Scene by scene review of "300" - Nov 13, 2006 - 05:32pm
From what I know, you are correct. I think that is what the movie and comic follow as well, the statement "300 spartans defeated some 10,000 Persians" could be in reference to one of two things:
A) The body count of Persians the Spartans piled up while they were dying.
B) The effect their deaths ended up having on the people of sparta, thus causing the defeat of the Persians.
Tom Cruise to resurect and run United Artists - Nov 03, 2006 - 11:08am
Wes, I would say ... if you thing the article was important, or a good read ... bang it! The more bangs, the more attention it gets on the front page, and thus the more people will read it
Sean McNamara will direct BRATZ - Oct 18, 2006 - 09:32am
My apoligies, news was slow at the time posted and I had to be up early so I couldn't wait around till 4am for the news to break.
Masi Oka talks NBC's HEROES - Oct 17, 2006 - 01:16pm
My thoughts ...
The cheerleaders dad is the token bad guy. He has a hero with him who is clearly very powerful.
Sylar seems to be a rogue, on noones side but his own.
The rest of the heroes are to early to call.
THE OMEN DVD Contest - Oct 10, 2006 - 11:04am
It is the new one, with Julia Stiles.
Terminator 3 on HD DVD, Descent coming to Blu-ray, and a really dumb idea. - Oct 09, 2006 - 12:03pm
My guess: neither.
My feelings are that the only way a new technology will survive right now is if it is backwards compatiable, meaning it will play standard DVD's as well as the new technology.
I believe that HD DVD does that, so I would say it will win easily or no one will win at all!
Weekend Box Office Report: Departed Arrives - Oct 09, 2006 - 11:58am
Actually, the $27 million was a very solid gross for the Departed. The studio will be very pleased and the film should have a great internal multiplier and easily pass $100m
Secret of LOST's numbers revealed - Sep 15, 2006 - 10:13am
I don't consider it a spoiler. Lost has wanted it's fans, since it began, to snoop online and interact with the show. They have set up sites online, dropped hints online, etc etc.
They aant fans to go online and do a little research.
Presenting: Suri Cruise - Sep 07, 2006 - 02:08am
I will be seeing every movie that Cruise stars in under his new production company.
I just can't stand the way some people talk about him let alone the way he was black balled out of the industry because of his religious beliefs ... as wacky as they may be.
The baby is adorable and the news is relevant. Any story containing one of the biggest stars on the planet and his movie star wife, both of whom have been in numerous sci-fi/fantasy films is relevant in my book. And my book is all that counts!
Three cheers for Cruise!
Hip, Hip, Horray!
I AM LEGEND schedules six month shoot - Aug 16, 2006 - 04:33pm
Eh, there is no argument for Harrison Ford as #1. Even if you count Indy and Star Wars films, his average movie gross for his career is about $97m and declining fast. Tom Cruise is at $98m and declining, while Will Smith sits at $114m and going up.
Another star I consider very bankable, maybe top 5, but not in contention for #1, would be Adam Sandler. Julia Roberts has declined and won't ever significantly go back up, Hanks is on the decline as well.
People like Smith, Sandler, Ferrell, Vaughn and to a lesser extent Ben Stiller. There is a new wave coming in McAdams, Bale, Johannson, and a few other young and upcoming actors.
International draw is a different story entierly as I would say you have to consider Tom Cruise the top draw internationally and then include Brad Pitt, and DiCaprio in the elite.
I find it very interesting that many of the newage bankable stars are very comedy oriented, their fan bases tend to be more loyal than drama/action/etc. Just another reason why Will Smith is so special, he can draw in multiple demographic and play any role where as the other names are more limited.
I AM LEGEND schedules six month shoot - Aug 16, 2006 - 02:06pm
Governator, I would have agreed with you before the opening of MI3. I would still agree with you if you consider only international and leave out domestic.
Tom Cruise has been hurt badly with this Scientology media bashing. Just look at the fact that Paramount recently slashed his production companies budget from $10m a year to $2m, you don't do that to a huge star. They essentially brought his production company down to standard levels.
Smith may make crap movies, but noone can bring in an audience like he can. He appeals to all demographics, he is can do comedy, he can do drama, he can do action, he is a studio's wet dream.
I AM LEGEND schedules six month shoot - Aug 16, 2006 - 12:48pm
Are you serious? Please, who is a more bankable star than Will Smith? Do you follow the box office?
Will Smith's last Wide release was HITCH, which he opened to over $43 million on it's opening weekend in FEBRUARY I might add. That number is unheard of for romantic comedies, especially at that time of the year. The film had crazy legs and finished with about $180 million.
Similar films: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days $23/$105 - The Break Up $39/$118 - Failure to Launch $24/$88 ... Hitch is the #3 all time Romantic Comedy behind only My Big Fat Greek Wedding (241) and What Women Want (182)
Before that he voiced Shark Tale, which opened to over $47 million and went on to $161 million. Not quite a Pixar opening, but still ranks 14th all time among Animated films. Did I mention that both Shark Tale and Hitch made disgusting amounts of money for the studio? Hitch had a budget of $70, Shark Tale $75
Then we have some of the films you mentioned. I Robot ($52 million opening weekend), Bad Boys II ($46 million opening weekend), MIB 2 ($52 million opening weekend).
The man continuously opens his action films in the $50+ range. Bad Boys II was not an event film, nor a tent pole. I Robot was not an event film, nor a tent pole. MIB 2 was a sequel, and thus could be argued as an event film, but it wasn't a tent pole either. I AM LEGEND will be a huge event film, it should open in the range of 60-70 million on it's opening weekend. It will not open lower than $50 million, it just won't.
You find me a more bankable star than Will Smith and I will be stunned. Tom Cruise? Tom Hanks? Who? It sounds to me like you simply don't like his films. That's fine. But you can't argue the fact that the man opens movies, and opens them big.
HOSTEL 2 casting update - Aug 16, 2006 - 02:44am
I don't know, Bijou Phillips has never been shy about taking her clothes off in films.

While the film may be crap, it will not be a footnote, nor will it bomb. This is an blockbuster film with a great release date and the most bankable star in the industry right now.
If you think this film will tank, I must question your logic. Will it suck? Quite possibly, but the two are totally different things.
