According to Variety, Katie Holmes has dropped out of The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins.

Instead, Holmes has signed on to Queen Latifah's Mad Money, to be directed by Callie Khouri.

There is no word as to what this means to The Dark Knight, though she was not expected to play a significant role.

KJ's Take:  Ever since this girl married Tommy Boy she has been very odd, more so than even Tom.  Whatever, I thought she was the only rough edge in the first film, so I suppose this is good news.

Hey man, Look at kidman, she become the richest girl of australia, and you know why ? Most of her fortune is because the divorce with tommy!!! So How come the little katie can keep the cold face ! Everywhere she goes now she s like the queen, so to accept a little role in the movie didn t match with her standard now ! Beside she realy don t need to be cast anyway. Her marriage put her off limit, it s good for her, it s bad for her career !

If I had to pick one weak point to batman begins, it was Katie holmes's character.
She was'nt that bad, but not that great either.
Now they can cut her role out and give more time to gordon, alfred, or the joker.
Good ridens

So, what's the bad new? Honestly?

Shrugs...

It's her loss more than it's ours.

Rachel was created especially for Batman Begins, so it's not like having to re-cast Catwoman or the like after we'd become attached to a central mythos figure.

(a tight pleather clad one, or otherwise - Ed)

In any case, I didn't have a _problem_ with her the way some people apparently did.

Although I do find it slightly humourous that she's not returning in lieu of the fact that her portrayal of Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins was nominated for a Golden Raspberry :D

(-Qwed88-) Yes, more time to Joker!

In fact I'd say devote a good part of the movie to making Joker fully 3 dimensional, because that could pay huge dividends in the future in terms of solidifying the new Batman franchise with an arch-nemesis that people can relate to and understand.

(as opposed to "he's the insane bad guy")

particularly if they're going to use The Killing Joke as a blueprint as has been rumoured.

They could delve into the psyche of Joker's often mis-remembered past as Alan Moore did in TKJ and show just how "real" Joker is.

and perhaps juxtapose how 2 people that lost everything they cherished reacted to that loss in such fundamentally opposite ways.

and yet, are not as different as one might believe.

Natch I don't mean to make it some horridly dull psyche-class flick, but if there's some more time to develop Joker now that Holmes is out, I think that can only work to the film's advantage.

Katie Holms is out. So where's the problem? Her role in the film was ok. If living in Gothem was rough and she decided to move to Kentuky, great the more power to her. Let's write her out of the script.

I agree with the other posts here. Let's hope they dedicate the screen time they had planned for her to expanding on the Jokers character.

I'm sorry, but before I get into the Katie Holmes portion of my comment, there is something else I feel it is my duty to add. When the hell did things like grammar, punctuation and spelling become things of the past? It just makes me sad. I realize that some of you are probably writing from work and that you may not have a bunch of time but for God's sakes, people!! These are simple rules to abide by, and they make you sound smarter. So put a little effort into it, folks.

Ahh, that felt good.

Now, onto Katie. As everyone here agrees so far... and I am DYING to find out who would disagree (other than her friends and family)... Rachel Dawes is the EXTREMELY weak link in the very strong chain that was the cast of BATMAN BEGINS. (P.S. - Screw the HFP and AMPAS voters for not giving Bale, the Nolans... or anyone else involved their due for THE PRESTIGE, which is the best film I saw last year.) So I feel very confident that the only time we'll see Rachel Dawes' character is from the back of the head, where hopefully The Joker will put a bullet through it. Although that would be something I'd prefer to actually see happen to Katie (not literally... don't get me wrong. I don't wish her any ill will; I just don't ever want her to work in Hollywood again). In fact, that was the only OTHER part of THE GIFT that I really enjoyed was her demise. And I'm certain that all the guys here know what that OTHER part was. So, Katie... bon voyage. We didn't want you in this film, we don't need you in this film, and now... we have gotten our wish!! Thanks!!

Now if only Nolan would hurry up and cast Harvey Dent already. It needs to be someone who's the same age-range as Bale, because Wayne and Dent need to be in the same age-range.

"Sorry, respectable movie franchise, but I'm leaving you.... to be in a Queen Latifah movie"

wessmith1966 • Jan 26, 2007, 07:12am •
The Rachel Dawes character was just used as a device to show that Bruce Wayne still lived inside Batman's cowl. Other than that, she was window dressing. I like Holmes, and if Cruise doesn't ruin her, I think she could grow into a deent actress. The Batman franchise doesn't really need her character, so I'm not surprised she won't appear in the next film.

My thoughts echo Buzzby's comment. You're leaving a highly anticipated movie (a franchise at that!!) with a great director to star in some flick with Queen Latifah? The Dianetic aliens living in your blood are steering you wrong Katie.

Okay, I like Queen La but career-wise this is a stupid move. From a fans point of view though, this is good. I wasn't really feeling her character in Batman Begins.

And exfan, don't insult Kidman's talent by saying she made her fortune in divorce. She makes $16 mil a movie. I think that might have a little more to do with her wealth then Tommy.
