Katzenberg Says 'Yes' on SHREK 4 & 5

The Age recently talked with DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg about the studios various projects.

Katzenberg revealed, in terms of SHREK sequels, the fourth Shrek instalment is scheduled for release in 2010. The fifth, he says, will be the last. "It's a finite story, has been from the beginning and I think that's part of its integrity, part of its strength, that we're not thinking this up as we go," he says. "Ultimately we will come back to understand how Shrek arrived in that swamp. We will reveal his story."

In response to criticism about the filmmakers "going to the well" too many times he replied, "Is it too much to expect the third to have the explosive quality of the first? Of course it is. That's a criticism that has been made, but . . . it has almost no validity to it. How is it possible that the third could have that level of surprise?"

I loved the first film, enjoyed the second, but have so far skipped the third (I suppose because I do not approve of Timberlake being cast in the film).

Is Dreamworks doing this as a cash cow or do they actually have a decent idea in mind? I'm thinking cash cow. Moving on....

Yeah, I have yet to see the 3rd one, mainly due to the poor reviews. I can wait for the DVD.

It sucks that the only reason Timberlake was cast was because he was dating Cameron Diaz. I guess they broke up, but he still got the part. Why can't actors stay as actors and singers stay as singers. Mark Wahlberg being an exception, but that wasn't really singing.

Miko, Some would argue that that's not really acting either...lol

I have loved the Shrek movies,,,,love the adult humor,,,in Shrek 2, when they were doing a paradoy of COPS called KNIGHTS, and they frisked Puss in Boots and pulled out a back of catnip and he says "Uhhh, thats not mine", I almost fell out of my seat laughing......that being said, I find it funny that the critics are now saying there is too much adult humor, even thugh thats what they praised the first two for. This is why I do not listen to critics. They have their pretenious heads up their Stuk-up asses. Every movie I love, seems to get bad reviews, hence the fact I think critics want every movie to be Oscar worthy, and grade it as such. Take a movie for what it is people.

Shrek 3 was just ok for me. The kids loved it and i got a couple of laughs, but I guess the franchise is "been there, done that" for me and it's lost its luster. I'm sure 4 and 5 will be entertaining with the proper mix of adult and kid humor to attract the masses and bank a few bucks.

I'm not that excited about this news, and I haven't seen Shrek the Third yet, but I don't really mind 2 more movies. If they expect to make huge bank, though, they're being wildly optimistic.
But is Katzenberg implying here that Shrek was always planned as a series of 5 movies? Jeff, you're straining credibility...

Does anyone really think they will end with5 if they continue making money?

I loved Shrek, dragged many friends to it, I loved Shrek 2, only because of Puss N Boots and what he added to the story, and part 2 took the characters forward.

But I was not so thrilled with part 3. First, there was only ONE scene that had me rolling and that was when Ginerbread man had his whole life flash before his eyes, with a tip of the hat to the 6 Million Dollar Man. But a LOT of the references went over not only kids heads, but teenagers and people in their 20's Will it make money? oh yeah, will they make more because it makes money, you bet, but they have now lost me from that franchise and I will not go.

Fantatsic Four is the next flick I am looking forward to, then TRANSFORMERS, the first BIG flick this summer that is not a sequel, I hope you all give that flick a chance. :-)

Movies I can look forward to skipping.

And the knowledge that nothing new is probably coming from Meyers as he rides this cash cow.

Blech.

I like Shrek, the first one. That's it. Really didn't like the second, and have no plans to even watch the 3rd on tv.

I don't know why they can't just quit while they're ahead. Shrek is a classic. The sequels are okay but nothing to get excited about. I was hoping this third one would be the last. However, it looks like "Shrek 4 and 5 The Search For More Money" will be coming. I just hope they come up with two good ideas where this can go from here because I don't see it.
