Keanu Reeves Goes Samurai in 47 RONIN

Epic period piece in 18th century Japan.

Genre star Keanu Reeves is traveling to feudal Japan for Universal Pictures, reports Variety. The actor who will next been seen threatening mankind in The Day the Earth Stood Still has been set to lead an epic period film titled 47 Ronin. Screenwriter Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast & Furious) is penning the screenplay while Scott Stuber will produce through his Stuber Productions. No director is named in the report.

Plot Concept:  Based on the true tale of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th century Japan. Reeves will play one of the swordsmen; the group and their master are revered in Japan for their revenge attack on Dec. 14, 1702.

The trade says the film will tell a stylized version of the story, mixing fantasy elements of the sort seen in The Lord of the Rings films, with gritty battle scenes akin to those in films such as Gladiator.

The movie itself kind of sounds cool, but Reeves as a Japanese warrior? May instead of his old catchphrase we will say I know the way of the Samuria.

Sounds awfully good.  "Whoa I'm a Samurai".

On behalf of America, I apologize to the people of Japan for having keanu reeves humiliate their historical figures.

Bushido has you!! This reminds me of a joke by Paul Mooney:

"How about a movie called the Last N%$&@ on Earth starring Tom Hanks."

Might as well have Sammy L show up as a wisecracking pain-in-the-ass sidekick who........ oh wait a tic. Sounds like poop to me.

lol....dazzler! Truth be told, i dont mind keanu that much....and the description "The trade says the film will tell a stylized version of the story, mixing fantasy elements of the sort seen in The Lord of the Rings films, with gritty battle scenes akin to those in films such as Gladiator" there!!

Is this a joke?

Note to the studio:  Don't make a Samurai movie with a surfer dude who can't act in the lead role.

Who is his co-star in this movie?  Paul Walker?

I guess the thought process for some producers if not all producers is to bring in an actor who has a large following so that way they sell more tickets at the box office, all the while hoping that the films story also is a big attraction and brings in people to the theater...In my opinion the studios think we are a bunch of morons when they introduce an idea like this one...I will go and see a movie if it looks good even if there is no well known actor in that movie...

Go out and get yourselfs some good Japanese actors to compliment a very well written script then make a good movie and put a killer advertising campaign behind it and I will go watch it, you don't have to put Keanu Reeves in this to make it a successful movie plus, why do you want to go and Embarress  yourselves not to mention piss off the Japanese people by disrespecting them? this movie would do killer in the Japanese market and US market if you just put the right actors in place as long as they are Japanese...Like I said this is my opinion and means very little in a world gone crazy lol

Manjisan, LOL!

But seriously, folks, as Jdell noted this will be done in a fantasy sort of way. In the sense that we know that LOTR or Conan doesn't represent real European history but is a fantasy version of it. I image this will do the same. I figure if this is some fantasy world we could probably see various ethnic groups show up that weren't there in actuality. Maybe Afro Samurai Samuel L. Jackson might show up.

Hmm..... i was all against a white-boy Keanu STARRING in this like everyone else... but Monkeyfoot does have a good point. Although i would have much rather seen a realistic version to this true story.... via "Last Samurai, Gladiator" style.

The real story of the 47 Ronin is pretty sick though. Im surprised no one made a movie about this earlier.

If u dont know... Wikipedia it..... pretty interesting and epic.

Keanu Reeves is part Asian.  His father is half Chinese and Hawaiian.  But even then I admit they could have came up with a better actor.  Keanu is "okay" but not for a movie like this.

Speaking of th story of the 47 Samurai, there's a book by Stephen Hunter about a ex-Marine who has to return a sword to Japan called 47th Samurai.  It is bad ass. In the story this guy is an old man, which makes everything in it seem more compelling.  I picture either Clint Eastwood or the poor man's Clint Eastwood (forgot his name; not a major actor) starring as the man.  In it he's described as a graying, tall, lanky but powerful man.  Check it out or atleast look at the summary.  If you like reading you won't be disappointed.  It's part of a series of books that the movie Shooter was taken from, which was a bullshit version of that book.  There's also a seperate series about the father of the main character from that series that's awesome; the best of which is Dirty White Boys.
