Actor Keanu Reeves has signed to star in the remake of the 1951 classic, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, for 20th Century Fox. The remake is being directed by Scott Derrickson from a David Scarpa script, production not beginning until later this fall-early 2008. Reeves will be appearing as "Klaatu", a humanoid type alien who accompanies a giant robot to Earth. Fox is planning this film to be one of their future summer tent pole releases.

Plot Concept: Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar.

Why do they always have to re-make the great movies? If you have to do a re-make why not just re-make a movie that had a good idea but wasn't done well the first time? This is not going to have anywhere near the impact of the original. Plus you just know that Klaatu will now be saying "I must deliver my message to your leaders... Whoa".

I realize that the original is some what politically outdated and unfashionable, but this "one" film should be considered sacrosanct.

The "Day the Earth Stood Still" serves as a motion picture monument to the post WW2 mentalities and fears of western civilization.

If a classic must be redone, then let it be "Forbidden Planet" (pssst, it's The Tempest, set it space). Great SFX for the time, but it was much too full of 50'-isms.

Nothing is sacrosanct in Hollywood Muenster. Nothing.

what I wanna know is, how can there be FOUR remakes of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, yet theres NONE for Day of the Triffids???

Bring on the remake... whats it gonna hurt? if it sucks, we'll avoid it.. nothing lost, nothing gained. If they do a good job with it, (hopefully) then why not remake it?
Nobody is twisting our arms to see these remakes, the studios just want them back in the limelight for todays audiences... where's the harm in that?

mckracken, you are right, and there's nothing to lose if a remake is produced... But it's just that "TDTESS" is still watchable, even today.

So, How about this? Klaatu returns to help the Earth during an invasion of Man-Eating Triffids and and human replicating seed pods. ?

I don't object to a remake, but sweet jesus, get somebody else besides Keanu.

Yeah agreed TKay.

I honestly like Keanu, he has his niche roles that he executed very well in movies like Bill & Ted, the first Matrix, and Point Break. But how in the hell is he going to compare to Michael Rennie's depth?? Klaatu, at least in the original, carries the movie for god's sake!

God help us.

I know that he doesn't quite have Keanu's star power yet, but they should have got James Caviezel for this...for one he's a much better actor...and two...he just looks the part.

They probably change the main topic to climate/environment issues.
