Thespian Harvey Keitel  is joining the cast of ABC's upcoming "Life on Mars" adaptation, the first regular TV role of his career, reports Variety. Keitel is on board to play Det. Gene Hunt, who heads up the homicide department and is known for using any means necessary to do his job. Production is set to start shooting in New York on August 5, 2008.

Plot Concept: The show---which has been completely revamped from its earlier pilot---
revolves around O'Mara's character, a contemporary cop who wakes up in the 1970s after a car crash. Keitel is set to star alongside Jason O'Mara (who plays lead character Det. Sam Tyler), as well as Michael Imperioli (Det. Ray Caling) and Jonathan Murphy (Det. Chris Skelton).

Nice. I hope this goes one step further than NYPD Blue and we see Keitel's penis.

This seems strange to me. I saw the pilot which had Colm Meaney as Hunt and I thought he was good in the role. However the pilot did duplicate the UK episode pretty closely. I assume that it didn't test well with American viewers so they want to retool it. Which is a shame I thought the original UK version was amazing as it was. Oh well more Hollywood watering down for the masses.

Ew. Thanks joey. I really didn't need that visual in my head for the rest of the day...

I just want to say that "Life on Mars" is one of my favorite David Bowie songs.

Life on Mars is a terrific British series, but, honestly, I find it hard to imagine this series without the gritty British sensibility. What made this series fun to me was the comparison to America's corrupt and sometimes brutal times in the moral awakening of the 1970s.
