A few weeks ago, Robert Sanchez over at IESB.net passed along the news that actor Kevin McKidd(Hbo's Rome) was in consideration to star in Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of THOR. So, are the rumors true? Technically, yes, but perhaps not as the Norse God himself. In a conference for his upcoming NBC show, Journeyman, he enlightened the press on the rumors. One of the details he passes along is the age-bracket of the leading character which perhaps takes him out of the running...

"It's semi true, I didn't know about it either until I heard the rumors and I called my agent and he went, yeah, yeah, we've been talking to them about it. But the last I heard from my agent, they're talking that they want to go for somebody much younger, a 19/20-year-old, for that role. So they're re-conceptualizing it as we speak."

"I think there's the other main male character in that movie that I'm in consideration for, but, certainly by no means it's not in the bag or anything and, to be honest, until I read a script I really don’t know. I haven't really had a look at a script. This is all still just information that's coming in. So, you know, it could be fun, but it just depends on what's on the page. I think it all starts and finishes with the quality of the script."

THOR hits theaters everywhere summer 2009.

Anytime I hear the word, "re-conceptualizing" I get nervous. Why does Thor have to be 19/20? Does everything have to "teenage nighttime soaped up? Eh...maybe, I'm just old and cranky.

Thor... I believe... as the son of a god, should look to be in his prime, not a kid... but young, like mid to late twenties, early thirties...

Does anyone else think he looks like a young Dolph Lundgren in that pic?

Wait....

Thor is going to be "19 or 20"?

Does that mean that Dr. Don Blake is going to be a teenager? What is he, Doogie Friggin' Houser????

Studio executives seem to be convinced 'young' viewers won't come to see movies where adults deal with adult situations, and these powers being thrust upon them. They think teens won't identify with a movie or character if it's not someone just like them going through it. Weak. WEAK!

I'd like to see a Thor in the prime of his power with a more "weathered" look, but there are good stories of Thor as a godling where he's learning about his duties, responsibilities and power. A story focusing on a young Thor when he receives the gift of mjollnir would be a great story. For those hoping to see the Marvel comics Thor flying around Chicago smiting the Absorbing Man, ithink you're going to be disappointed. This is going to be more of the mythological Thor, although the producers will probably give him blonde hair.

I don't think everyone should read so much into this. This is an actor rattling off the top of his head about what he's heard from his agent. I'm sure the basic facts are probably true. They are looking for someone else for Thor ,probably younger looking than the mid-thirties that he appears to be. Whether they mean a teen or a young adult in late twenties will most likely depend on the actor. If the talent meets their needs but is a bit older or younger they'll go with that. I only hope it is still a seasoned actor with some classical/Shakespearean training. Not a wrestler.
I wonder what role McKidd is being considered for? Balder? Odin? Loki?

Oh crap! They are going to remake The Mask 2 - Loki comes to a young kid, tells him he is a God...hilarity and hijinx ensue. I'm gonna give Marvel some early credit on this one and fall into wait-n-see mode. Ironman and Incerdible Hulk look like they're gonna be awesome - Thor and Antman (uh...still curious to find out more about that one) will be next - I'll trust in Ari for now...

Dude. Look at Thor at his best in the Avengers titles in the 80s and his own title by Simonson...he's THE Odinson, beard flowing.

He's definitely an older guy than 19 or 20.
